Akari is the third album from Tokyo duo Illuha. Following 2011’s debut Shizuku (12k1067) and 2013’s Interstices (12k2028), Akari takes the next artistic step for the band. While Shizuku was recorded in the US and completed separately by the artists, Interstices captured the duo creating their exceptionally detailed music together live during a Japaneses tour. Akari, in turn, is the first studio album where Illuha recorded and mixed together, throughout the entire process. The beautiful st-robo studio in Tokyo put a collection of amazing equipment at their fingertips, from vintage mics and outboard gear to a vast collection of instruments, both acoustic and electronic. Their writing sessions were numerous and long with details meticulously obsessed over for nearly a year. The result is the most bewildering music Illuha have created to date. An album swimming with the most delicately tactile sounds and instrumentation that draws the listener in with hushed, motionless attention.

While Illuha’s Corey Fuller and Tomoyoshi Date are often drawn to the most sparse notes of Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos, acoustic grand piano and guitar, the breadth of instrumentation is partially what makes Akari so abosrbing. They have succeeded in creating their own universe of sound, so beautifully recorded, where each element not only has its own space but connects and interacts so fluidly with the other sounds. It is as if they are placed perfectly by nature, the compositions are fluid and organic, a far cry from anything calculated or structured. It is this open space that the music exists in which in turn defines the music itself. There is ample room to breathe within this forest of gentle tines, bubbling analogue synthesizers, clicking percussion and quiet field recordings. This is subtlety at its most refined; hushed without being saccharine, distant without being morose.

Akari is the Japanese word for light. Conceputally the duo used this word as a guide, as if they were searching through the dark, trying to keep the light alive, as if one is cradling a candle doing everything in their power to keep it alight in a storm. It is this almost visceral sense of sheltering, of protection, that gives Akari a very human and personal sound whose intensely deep focus is as impressive as it is arresting.

The German instrumental duo SANKT OTTEN, founded in 1999, consists of Stephan Otten (drums, programming, synthesizer) and Oliver Klemm (guitar, synthesizer, piano), and has been releasing on Denovali Records since 2009. 

Their eighth album ENGTANZ DEPRESSION (engl.: CLOSE DANCE DEPRESSION) expresses a significant progression of their material on the preceding album trilogy (Gottes Synthesizer, Sequencer Liebe, Messias Maschine). New drum sounds and acoustic instruments such as harmonium and piano may be found, and some pieces emerged from free improvisations, which is a completely new approach taken by this band. 

The album starts with "Urlaub Unter Psalmen" which builds up slowly, piles up further, just to completely disintegrate in the end. Klemm’s typical E-bow guitar parts and the dubby baseline make this track a catchy tune. Next is "Beten, Tanzen, Küssen" which is the first Sankt Otten track ever where a harmonium appears. In combination with the minimal beat one could even think that this track is suitable for a club context, but the two musicians always manage to stay away just enough from the ordinary and remain slightly disturbing as ever. "Im Lichtorgelparadies" switches on the lights in paradise with a hypnotic synthesizer melody and the KRAFTWERK-like beat gives the track a floating ease. 

One of the album highlights is the 12-minute monster "Sing die Apokalypse", which is dominated by Otten’s powerful, but always minimalistic drumming. After about 10 minutes the listener might think that the apocalypse has aleady arrived, but Sankt Otten move on and manage to even increase this feeling. The track ends unexpectedly and with a winking bow to the influential American electronic protopunks SUICIDE. However, Sankt Otten also demonstrate that they can still master the meditative sounds. Tracks like "Der Himmel ist voll" or "Die tragische Nummer" are quite far apart from average electronica. 

The titles of the tracks appearing on the album are as always a unique mixture of aphorisms, sarcasm and puns. In spite of the new directions explored on this album, SANKT OTTEN maintain their characteristic Holy Trinity of krautrock, ambient, and 80ies electronica. Floating, meditative, dazing and catchy at times.

Piano Interrupted, the anglo / french duo formed by Tom Hodge and Franz Kirmann is a musical entity in continuous reinvention, their music constantly evolving and transforming from concert to concert, record to record. Studio compositions are deconstructed for live shows, becoming brand new pieces, which in turn serve as a basis for future new compositions, like a never-ending “mise en abyme”
It was just a question of time then before the pair turned to other producers to ask them to rework their music. Concentrating exclusively on material from their last LP “The Unified Field”, Piano Interrupted invited a handful of artists and producers from Denovali Records' roster including Hidden Orchestra, Floex, Origamibiro, John Lemke, Saffronkeira and Second Moon Of Winter to reinvent some of their compositions. Oscillating between dub, techno, abstract hip hop, ambient and post-classical, each interpretation offers a completely fresh approach to the work, sometimes barely recognisable, and sheds new light on the infinite directions that Piano Interrupted's intricate compositions can be taken.
“The Unified Field Reconstructed” is a reminder of the possibilities and a promise of more exquisite exploration in the duo's 3rd album, scheduled for later this year, based on recordings taking place in Senegal (where Franz spent his childhood) in February 2015.

AH! KOSMOS is the moniker of Istanbul-based producer and instrumentalist Başak Günak. Her debut EP called FLESH has been released in her native country via Turkish label Müzik Hayvanı back in 2013. Along the release of her first full length BASTARDS in April 2015, Denovali Records will provide a re-issue FLESH, available for the first time on a world-wide scale and on the vinyl format.

Echoing and bouncing off the surfaces, the nuanced metallic droplets of synth-triggered sound interacts with moody sustained cluttering down-tempo beats and unholy choral voices over the trio of ambience on this three-track EP FLESH. From the mysterious catacombs and imagined otherworldly terrains of Istanbul, oozes the enlightened cosmic union of analog and electronic.

Supporting the likes of DARKSIDE, James Holden, Kiasmos, Two Door Cinema Club, Emika, Daddy G (Massive Attack) in her hometown Istanbul, AH! KOSMOS  performed at remarkable festivals as Rock’n Coke, Babylon Soundgarden, Venice Electro Festival, Budapest Punkurica Festival, Piknik Elektronik in Brussels, Tokyo Electronic Music of Arts Festival and CitySonic Festival in Mons.
Başak Günak has also composed and created sound design for contemporary dance and plays, short-flms and site-specifc performances / installations in several art spaces including Rotterdamse Schouwburg, Prague Signal Festival, 18th and 19th Istanbul International Theater Festival (IKSV), ARENA Theater Festival Nürnberg and Venice ElectroFestival. Recently, she has been invited to the highly coveted Red Bull Music Academy 2014 Tokyo as a participant.

Over several years, Guenter Schlienz has graced labels such as Constellation Tatsu, Sacred Phrases, S.I.N.K. CDs, SicSic, Preservation so we are very excited here at Rural Colours to be added to that list with his latest work Peace.

After noticing that several friends had begun to end emails marked 'Peace', Guenter Schlienz, ever full of questions, started to ponder on the meaning of the word in this context.  Around the same time he started to read Henry Miller's book 'The Collossus of Maroussi' and was intrigued by a couple of paragraphs devoted to exactly this question: what is "the meaning of peace". He came to the conclusion that there is much more to "peace" than just the absence of war.  The albums track titles are words by Henry Miller, and the work is Guenter's humble attempt to gather sounds and atmospheres around those lines.

Using modular synths combined with tape loops, analog and digital delays, vintage electronic organ and guitar, Schlienz works within a romantically inward looking framework, creating music that comes from deep within.  His compositions reflect themes of tenderness, alienation and homecoming and feature a range of guest musicians including Masako Kamikawa (piano on  'Reverberation of the Pandemonium') and Niko Lazarakopoulos (guitar on 'Faint Whispers') and even an anonymous busker from the streets of Stuttgart on 'Who Put the Demons There?'
