The Songs of Ascents (Shir HaMa'alot in Hebrew) were traditionally sung on the road to Jerusalem, and possibly on the fifteen steps leading up to the Temple. Jewish pilgrims would sing these psalms as they "ascended" from all corners of Israel three times a year—for Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles.Each psalm was not isolated but part of a continuous spiritual journey embedded in Scripture itself.
