Welcome to the first exciting episode of Deodaat's Diary, where I, Deodaat, a DJ from Utrecht, the Netherlands, embark on a musical adventure across Europe. All sets are published on Youtube, but people asked me to place the sets on SoundCloud as well, so here you are! Today, we find ourselves in the enchanting region of Normandy, France, ready to explore the heart of the French Disco and Soul movement! The set ends a bit sooner than planned because the battery of the van/laptop ran out because it was still freezing and sun was dropping quickly ;), but hope you enjoy!

Now, let's dive into the pulsating rhythm of France's disco history – a nation that has masterfully woven electronic brilliance into its musical tapestry. From the iconic beats of Air, where electronic sounds take flight, to the soulful tunes of Dwight Druick, we're immersing ourselves in the rich melodies that define the French disco experience. I will share the setlist below and a short history of the disco movement in france for anyone interested.

1. Late 1970s - Emergence of Disco in France:
The late 1970s saw the emergence of disco as a global phenomenon, and France was no exception. Discotheques and clubs in major cities like Paris began embracing the pulsating beats of disco, providing a platform for DJs and artists to experiment with the genre.
2. French Touch Movement:
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, France gained international recognition for its contribution to electronic music through the "French Touch" movement. While not exclusively disco, French Touch artists, such as Daft Punk and Stardust, drew inspiration from disco's funky rhythms and incorporated them into their electronic productions. The next Dedoaat's Diary will focus more on the French Touch movement.
3. Electronic Influence in French Disco:
French disco is characterized by a strong electronic influence, particularly the use of synthesizers and electronic instruments. This electronic touch adds a futuristic and avant-garde dimension to the classic disco sound. You will notice that this set mainly focusses on this electronic aspect.
4. Zouk: 
Zouk is a musical movement pioneered by the French Antillean band Kassav' in the early 1980s. It was originally characterized by a fast tempo (120–145 bpm), a percussion-driven rhythm, and a loud horn section. Some Zouk songs will play as a part of this set. 
5. Iconic French Disco Artists:
Cerrone: French drummer and producer Cerrone is often credited as one of the pioneers of French disco. His 1970s hits like "Love in C Minor" and "Supernature" showcased his ability to blend orchestral elements with disco beats.
Space: The band Space, known for their cosmic and futuristic disco sound, gained popularity in the late 1970s with tracks like "Magic Fly."

Hello everyone, and welcome back to the third edition of Deodaat's Diary! I'm Deodaat, a DJ hailing from Utrecht, The Netherlands, and I'm currently on a journey across Europe, capturing mesmerizing sets from incredible locations. As I explore, I delve into the musical histories of the countries I visit, sharing the rich stories with you through these sets.

I've just arrived in Spain, and let me tell you, it's an absolute delight to be here! From the breathtaking road through the Pyrenees to the fantastic weather, the warm-hearted people, amazing food, and the stunning coastline with surf-worthy beaches – Spain has it all. But above all, what truly captivates me is the music.

Travelling through multiple countries allows me to witness the unique musical flavors, comparing them to the cultural differences and observing how each nation influences the other. Spain's music scene, deeply rooted in cultural genres like rumba, is a captivating blend of various Spanish influences, especially with the upcoming disco movement in the '70s. The influences of different musical backgrounds are highlighted in this set by the two covers of popular English/American songs (We are family and Good Times), notice the Spanish influences highlighted by the rythm of the percussion and the typical piano/guitar melody.

Recording of my 6-hour set at the awesome Venue NAR in Utrecht on 5 sept 2024. A journey starting in lower BPM segment, slowly climbing up with songs mainly focussed on South-Amercia, South-Africa and Spain. To end in a energetic climax with Tropical Disco en Tribal House.

I stepped into the legendary blue container at Operator Radio in Rotterdam on 16 December 2024. For my debut, I carefully curated a journey through some of the most intriguing percussive soundscapes I could find. The set unfolded with African-inspired rhythms that brought tribal energy, seamlessly transitioning into Latin-infused house grooves. 

Through some deeper tracks, and some Progressive House I ended on a warm note, featuring my talented and dear friend Vrøge's electrifying Kunte Latino - Kunte Latino (vrøge's massive bongo edit) (min 49)

I had the honor of recording my signature set at EKKO, an hour packed with my favorite tracks of the moment and a preview of what you can expect on the dancefloor this summer!
