The first home I remember living in was at Ponderosa Drive, a bi-level that I remember leaking water during a storm which made us abandon ship in the middle of the night. It was the home that we got our first pet - a miniature Schnauzer named Toby. There was a lot of Gun Smoke on the television. There are pictures of me wearing a cowboy hat or a Native American head-dress, brandishing six-guns (cap) and riding a 70's era toy horse suspended on a metal frame by springs. My early days were filled with 1970's naivety, stealing strawberry's from the garden next door, playing with the kids in the neighborhood and having no idea that there was a world around me much, much bigger than the little cul-de-sac we rode our big-wheels around. 

But, then it all came to an end one day. My dad moved out. It was the end of our family. At the time I was three years old so I really could not understand what and why things happened. I just remember my dad packing up the car and leaving.

That was that - my first lesson in how unfair life is at times.

Ponderosa Drive

At 13, I went to live with my father and step mother on Church Street. It was a trying experience for me. My exit from my mother and step-father's home was traumatic, exiled because of an embarrassing episode of shop-lifting. Rejection is a tough thing to deal with, especially as a kid by their parents. And, as much as I hated much of the time spent in this new home it was an extremely important time of my life creatively. I was introduced to those who would provoke my interest in the Arts and Entertainment. My cousin (Brian) had awakened me to the genre of New Age music and I can't thank him enough for that. However, my earliest exposure was technically in the second grade because I was given a cassette tape of Chariots of Fire (Vangelis) that i played into the ground. It was in this house that I first fell in love with Jan Hammer, Ray Lynch, John Carpenter, Tangerine Dream, Enya, Mike Oldfield, Mannheim Steamroller, Enigma, Osamu Kitajima, Shadowfax, The Art of Noise, Yanni, Shiho, and Kitaro. Their sounds transformed the world around me in a more palatable place to exist. These musicians would be the greatest influence on me in just about every way regarding my life in general. 

Of course it wasn't all bad. I fell in love for the first time while living here. I got my first car while living here. I met most of my life-long friends while living here (and lost some along the way too). Like every place that I've ended up, I made a lot of mistakes. I know I broke a heart or two, including my own from time to time. I hand-picked various hills that I would repeatedly die upon for random reasons long forgotten so I am hugely thankful for the power of resurrection. I wish I could go back and change a few things...and by that I mean by hurting less people I valued. Maybe in the next life, I suppose.

Escapism was the name of the game on Church Street. The majority of my evenings were invested in reading comic books, drawing heroes and villains, watching John Carpenter films, pondering the wonders of the universe, staring at lava lamps endlessly, dreaming of portals to other places, and romanticizing reality all while avoiding responsibilities like homework, chores, and familial obligations.

The electronic and digital domain holds a special place in my heart because of they synthetic repetition that is captured - like a musical clock of sorts. 

Several listeners have claimed my music sounds like "video game" music. At one point, I used to take offense at this. But, as time has gone by, I have learned to not only accept that sentiment but embrace it. After all, I did invest countless hours in front of the Super Nintendo and Sony PlayStation, entranced by the fantastic worlds (and their soundtracks) that stirred my imagination and immersed me in the digital realms. So, if it sounds like something from a video game, there is good reason for this."
