After a series of fiery releases on his own Depths of My Soul, Berlin-based producer Nat Wendell kicks off his newly minted sub-label Depths by getting right down to business.

For 001, he’s invited two East Coast mainstays, Mike Terra and Jus’ Nowhere, creating a snapping EP focused on groove and rhythm that directly foreshadows the future of the label.

Opening the proceedings is Terra’s rolling, addicting “Moonshine,” which functions as a wonderful tribute to the best of the Big Apple’s deep sounds.

Next up is “Harlesden,” Wendell’s own contribution, a whacked out number that draws you into its waify pads and bubbling baseline and keeps you there.

Rounding off the EP in style is D.C-based Jus Nowhere, whose “Swingin’” is a typically tight and kinetic closer.

Mike Terra - Depths Guest Mix - 01

Adding to what already has been a tremendous year for the Berlin-based producer, Nat Wendell returns home for his third release on his very own imprint, Depths of My Soul. On the surface, DMS 003 may appear to be vintage—and pulsating—Wendell. Under the cracks of these three tracks, though, is a producer moving towards music as a tool of political and musical advancement.

A1’s “Takes These Chains off My Mind” is an explicit cry from liberation away from mental slavery, an anthem for, in the words of Wendell himself, people “emancipating themselves from mental slavery, placed on black and people of colour alike.”

B1’s “Tha Music” plays on similar ideas of music as liberation, jolting dancers into submission with its rolling hats and snappy arrangements that will easily fit into any house head's bag. Judging by the name,

B2’s “Questioning Existence” may seem a tad existential—but, taking a late-nite 90’s garage cue from his own hometown, it’s anything but!

If ever a producer could be hailed as the true heir to New York's storied house music throne, it's undoubtedly Mike Terra—and his new, seriously weighty Rhythm of Love EP on Nat Wendell's Depths imprint is a testament to that in strides.

The EP begins with the peak-time infectiousness of A1 "7th & C," setting the commanding tone for what's to come. The fittingly Big Apple-titled A2 "27th Street (Dub Mix)" follows, a rollicking shuffler whose fat kicks, stabbing synths, and snapping cymbals recall Johnick's steamier cuts. New York in the 90’s is indeed the frame of reference for this EP, and the B-side finds Terra doing what he does best: creating bumping, stomping, and uplifting must-have workouts for the floor. Whether you prefer the swarthy slapping, Todd Terry-esque groove of title track B1 "Rhythm of Love" or the conga-driven, deep-padded chunk of late-night house that is B2 "City Got You Trippin'," a late-night jam crafted for those still standing, both tracks are bound to find their places in the record bags of DJs—and heads—worldwide.

With swinging snares and it's subby bass; "The Way (Part 2)" is an energetic, club ready track with a driving kick & consistent lead that's progresses as the track builds.

Theoretics kicks off the B-side and delves deeper whilst still maintaining its dancefloor-ready appeal. The subtle euphoric vocal samples & prominent chords give you something to hold onto, whilst the rhythm keeps you moving.

Providing you with a more soulful offering, "Release Your Soul" is reminiscent of a classic 96' style house track, with all the right elements to match. Snappy snares, smooth chords and a warm baseline.

B2 - Release Your Soul

B1 - Theoretics

I've never heard Nat Wendell play, but if he plays records like he makes
tracks he must be one-of-a-kind. 

Theoretics leads off with "The Way (Part 2)," which approaches something like the apotheosis or platonic ideal of a type of Deep '90s banger that DJs covet, fans adore and charitably few producers can create. This is a commanding track - from Point A to Point B takes everyone on a journey in the most classic, least clichéd sense of the word. Serious heat!

Theoretics leads the B-side with some serious jackin' beats, dubbed out vocals and trippy chords that lurk right up underneath the surface. 

Replace the hats with some wicked snares and an uplifting little melody for "Re- lease Your Soul."
This is unapologetic fodder for the dance oor, and it's pleasing to see records like this getting circulated again.

A1 - The Way Part 2

After a sold-out release on Courtesy of Balance which gained huge support and plays from some key DJs, Nat Wendell returns to his own imprint with another dancefloor heavy, 3track EP. 

"Reality" kicks of the 3 track EP with some pulsating stabs, mixed with trippy underlays over a swingy stripped back Deep House rhythm. 

Flip the record and you're presented with a bouncy, yet dubby adventure "Can't Stop". The title track "Renditions" doesn't let up with any of the deep energetic tones set. 

Here Nat teases out a deeper yet up tempo way to end the release.
