Next up on @idlecellars mix series is a beautiful mix from @briannotbrian. His history is firmly rooted in his hometown of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Residencies and guest spots in the city's most respected hip-hop, funk, soul and disco nights throughout the mid to late 90's saw him broaden his tastes and cement his skills as a seasoned selector. It was the spirit of growing up in Northern Ireland and his experiences in Belfast that saw him bring his own style and flavor to London at the turn of the millenium. Starting from scratch, obsessively digging, buying records and building new relationships in the metropolis gave Brian the opportunity to put on lots of parties and DJ alongside his friends and eventually his heroes. It also helped that he was putting in shifts behind the counters of the city's premier record spots including: MVE, Phonica, Kristina and Rye Wax. Armed with a heavyweight record collection and a solid crew of close musical friends, Brian co-ran the now infamous, musically open and freestyle minded 'Special Needs' parties that lasted almost 8 years at various venues around the city. 

In more recent times Brian has traveled the world playing music with gigs in Australia, Brazil, the USA and Canada as well as regular trips all over the UK and Europe. These global excursions have no doubt been bolstered by the record label that Brian set up with his longtime friend Salik Z - Going Good. An open-minded and sonically adventurous imprint that has achieved worldwide acclaim. Brian continues to play music far and wide with sets at festivals like Dekmantel, Meadows In The Mountains, Farr Festival and a yearly residency at Kala Festival in Albania. With a deep collection of eclectic music, knowledge and skills to match, Brian has a thirst for sounds of all kinds and enjoys joining often disparate dots and connections between records. This special mix for Idle Cellars is intended to evoke that late night / early morning feel, a selection of new finds, old faves and even some unreleased gems..... probably best listened to outside, on a good system and with a drink in hand ✨🍷✨

Russ (DJ Dribbler) lives in Ibiza, DJs at Pikes, Paradise Lost, Ibiza Sonica, OpenLab, WOM, Standard Hotel and Malanga Cafe. He has written two novels which have achieved cult status on the underground scene, "Harry's Kebabs" and its sequel, "The Take Away". He was a resident DJ at Pure in Edinburgh, Tour Dj for Orbital in the 90s, spent 10 years djing in NYC, was a resident on Amsterdam's Red Light Radio for 4 years and is now a resident at Pikes.

"I met Ken (Slothboogie) recently, when he was over DJing at Pikes. We spoke about Edinburgh. He knew of Pure. We chatted about the influence and contribution from Edinburgh in the 90s to today's goings on. It is a vast diaspora of artists, producers, writers, record shops, distributors, DJs, promoters and punters worldwide. I live in Ibiza now, I've lived in many countries and cities, and I'm lucky enough to hear and play alongside some world-class DJs every week. You always keep learning.
I spent years hounding black music from the USA, and then suddenly, the penny dropped with Americana.
It was all down to JIM, aka Jim, aka Ron Basejam. The harmony and melody and pounding soulful drive to the music, it had it all. I play that in the first hour. In the second section of the mix, I play a lot of tracks sent to me by friends. Andy Kidd lands mixes every year and they go through DJs here like a dose of the measles. Random House Project is also worth a mention this year for the Slave edit on there and other remixes. It's great to be able to share them with you."

Scott brings a wealth of musical experience having played at some of the Norths seminal nights in the heyday of house musics ascension, most notably Leeds institution back2Basics. Scott closes out the show with a nigh on 2 hour mix.

In 1991, I moved to Bournemouth, DJing house parties before landing a weekly residency at Madisons Night Club. In 1993, I relocated to Leeds and became a resident DJ at Back2Basics, playing alongside legends like Paul Oakenfold, Roger Sanchez, Andy Weatherall, and Derrick Carter, not to mention the other residents, Ralph Lawson Huggy, James Holroyd.

The Architect roams the lower levels only to find familiar corridors leading somewhere else entirely. Doorways open to impossible landscapes, buildings breathe, and time inside the city no longer matches the clocks. Reality is melting into dream logic — and no one seems to notice but him.

The Architect has been wandering for days, though time has lost its grip here. In this place, streets rearrange themselves when you look away. He passes a corner bakery and, seconds later, finds it replaced by an open shore where waves hiss against cobblestones. No one seems alarmed. People walk as if nothing changes — their smiles faint, their eyes slow to blink — as if they’ve already made peace with living inside a dream.

The city feels alive, but not in the way machines live. It breathes, shifting with the rhythm of an unseen sleeper. Doorways lead to places that could not exist: a stairwell descending into clouds, an elevator that opens to a forest in autumn, a library whose shelves are lined with the names of people who haven’t been born yet.

The Architect begins marking his path with chalk on the walls, but each mark fades within moments, erased by the city itself. It’s as if the place resists permanence, as though it doesn’t want to be mapped — or remembered.

One night, under rain that tastes faintly of the sea, the Architect hears a voice from a window above: “It’s not the city that’s dreaming… it’s you.” The shutters close.

He stands in the empty street, unsure whether to move forward or to wake up — if waking up is still possible.

“Cities Made of Sleep” depicts a dreamlike, unstable world where urban landscapes shift, dissolve, and rewrite themselves, blurring the line between memory, illusion, and reality. Streets vanish, towers turn to grass, oceans appear and fade, and even names and maps cannot hold their place, suggesting a city that is alive, fluid, and indifferent to human attempts at permanence. The inhabitants, numbed to the constant transformations, accept the unreality as normal, while the narrator resists, trying to hold onto meaning in a place where nothing endures. 

The final twist — “it’s not the city that’s dreaming, it’s you” — reframes the disorientation as a projection of the self, making the city both a metaphor for the subconscious and a mirror of fragile human perception.
