The rattle of a snare drum could be heard in the distance as the band marched their way across the land. Eventually they would reach the gates of the city and the boom boom boom of drums would be upon their very doorstep. The party would commence, the sun would gaze down upon them and they would dance with a new lease of life. The boom was everything to them, everything and nothing at the same time. The dance meant more.

Фракция «Майков» — Сергей Кузнецов и Вика Пестрова — представила на конкурс Онфима композицию Vetiver. Чтобы приоткрыть закулисье создания трека, Сергей прикинулся Юрием Дудем и взял у Вики интервью.

С: У тебя есть 10 минут поиграть в ролевые игры? Я буду твоим персональным Дудем, а ты — моей гостьей. 
(напевает) «Юрий будет Дудь, Дудь будет Юрий».

В: (смеется) Используйте мой смех потом в заставке.

С: Давай начнем с начала: ты попала в команду с Сергеем, которого до этого не знала. Каково это — писать композицию с незнакомцем?

В: Я давно хотела коллабить с кем-то: это синергия и взаимоответственность. С Серёжей мы попали в конкурс в единственной команде из двух человек, и я сразу зачем-то решила, что это не просто так. С первой же встречи было весело и интересно — будто мы с одной волны. Поэтому сам процесс вышел клёвым. Думаю, тут не без счастливой случайности.

С: А у вас были моменты, когда кто-то тянул на себя одеяло?

В: Были моменты разногласий, и самый отстой — в конечном итоге они чисто вкусовые, особо не докажешь, почему лучше без синта в куплете, а не с ним. Поэтому для пользы дела кое-кто из нас одеяло отдавал. Важнее доверять, нежели доказывать.

С: Круто. Я так понимаю, синты придумывала ты? Как вы вообще распределились? Кто-то музыку, кто-то слова, как в старые добрые времена?

В: (смеется) Всё-то вы понимаете. По правилам конкурса, мы должны были чётко разделиться на креативщика/звукорежиссёра. Но мы сразу решили на это забить и всё делать вместе, перекидываясь идеями на каждом этапе. Я ему аккордовую прогрессию, он мне её развитие, он — костяк песни, я — историю на эту гармонию, он слова — я слова.

С: Никогда бы не подумал, что можно так писать трек, но я и не музыкант. А как ты оцениваешь, ты могла бы все сделать сама, если бы осталась одна во фракции? Ты ведь окончила Школу Маскелиаде, то есть в принципе должна все уметь от и до.

В: Не хотела бы остаться одна, но если бы Серёжа внезапно уехал искать себя в Индию, то закончить всё равно пришлось бы. Но вышла бы совсем другая история — я не дружу с гитарами.

С: Эти гитары — изюминка вашего трека? Я прочитал много интервью с тобой, пока готовился к нашей встрече, и у тебя часто фигурирует слово «стилёк». Это оно? Можешь поподробнее рассказать об этом?

В: Обещаете не вырезать мой смех из монтажа? Это тоже «стилёк».

С: Мы никогда ничего не вырезаем, стараемся быть, как Познер.

В: Мне сложно сказать, где у нас изюминка зарыта. У нас есть бомба — она в конце. Под «стильком» я подразумеваю некий неочевидный «вайб». Есть он или нет — нельзя сказать по одному треку и сразу после релиза.

С: Да, я слушал ваш трек. Правда, это не моя музыка, я больше по панк-року и футбик погонять. Ты считаешь, что этот опыт совместной работы прокачал твои навыки мьюзик-продакшна?

В: Так или иначе. Скорее открыл, как много ещё впереди.

С: Мы шоу про цифры, поэтому я должен спросить: сколько вы времени и денег потратили на все?

В: Мы точно покупали пятилитровку воды за 100 рублей и ещё пару раз где-то ели. Кажется, это весь бюджет. Времени — три-четыре дня на общую композицию в канун Нового года, два дня записи вместо наивно ожидаемых пяти часов и адовая неделя дней и ночей аранжировки, сведения и «мастеринга».

С: Адиль вон целый дом казахов собрал для мастеринга, подумайте об этом на досуге.

В: Gotcha.

С: Традиционная рубрика «Оксимирон». У вас в конце рэп, а песня вообще в другом стиле (стильке?). Как вы до этого додумались? Не кажется ли вам это вставным зубом?

В: Это офигенная Сережина задумка, уж не знаю, как она ему в голову пришла. Это не вставной зуб, это третий глаз.

С: Наша классика: блиц-опрос. Я задаю вопросы быстро и коротко, ты отвечаешь быстро, но не обязательно коротко.

Тонкий синтпад или французская гитара?

В: Синтпад.

С: Что бы сказал Амаяк Акопян, услышав ваш трек?

В: «Магия», конечно же.

С: И последнее: Маскелиаде — красавчик?

В: Ещё какой!

С: Спасибо, что пришла!

In 2017, Lagartijeando (Mati Zundel), released his second full length album ‘El Gran Poder,’ via Wonderwheel and subsequently hypnotized the masses with the way he laced the traditional Charango playing that he picked up traveling the Andes with the pulsing, digital-cumbia electronica that’d been popularized in the region by the likes of Chancha Via Circuito, Nicola Cruz, and beyond. El Gran Poder plucked Zundel from his small town of Dolores in Argentina and catapulted his sound onto a global stage. He was revered by the likes of The Fader and Bandcamp, who referred to him as an electro-folk alchemist - and that he is. 

On June 7, Lagartijeando casts a new spell with Jallalla, an ambitious new full length being released on Wonderwheel Recordings. Jallalla is a word used in Bolivia to celebrate something- and it’s a word that strengthens in meaning when more people say it together. Jallalla is an entire life in an album

Gitkin’s music exists somewhere between primal, rootsy memory and distant exotic yearning — A dusty bordertown where the familiar blends imperceptibly into the enchantingly foreign. 

After a long and fruitful run as a bandleader with relentlessly touring party-rockers Pimps Of Joytime and a Grammy-nominated country blues collaboration with Cedric Burnside, multi-instrumentalist Brian J set out to “explore tonalities I’d never messed with,” as he puts it. It was a release from “having to write lyrics or involve my voice,” he notes, and so the (mostly) instrumental sound of Gitkin came into being. 

Reviews of Gitkin’s first LP grappled with descriptors, tagging it vaguely as “cinematic” and comparing it favorably with Khruangbin. True, the music is largely wordless, emotionally evocative, and guitar driven. But it possesses an alluring alchemy all its own. 

Gitkin’s first release, 2018’s well-received Five Star Motel, amply demonstrated his ease with earthy funk and comfortably-cut rhythm. On his new full-length release Safe Passage, the itinerant guitar slinger broadens his already rich palette with melodies informed by Greek and Middle Eastern modalities, Peruvian Chicha and Tuareg Saharan guitar styles. No gimmick, this juxtaposition of gut-bucket blues and funk low-end with unexpectedly twisting lead phrases highlights the intense flavors found in each savory ingredient. 

Recorded at his home studio in New Orleans, Safe Passage showcases a new batch of immediately engaging, repeatedly satisfying cuts, ranging from surf exotica (“Cat Nip”) to raunchy roadhouse stompers (“Fools Gold” and “The Drive”) to dreamy vocal cuts “Foot Steps” and “Hold On” to the floating finale of “Safe Passage.” 

Gitkin’s production radiates character and warmth, leaning on soft-focus vintage mics, dubby spring reverbs and the quirks of an analog tape machine. Further enhancing the intimate vibe are distinguished guests like Carol C (of Si*Sé), who lends her striking voice to three tracks, including the strutting single “De La,” veteran Chauncey Yearwood (congas) and New Orleans local Clifton “Spug” Smith, who provides a sousaphone low-end on the cumbia-not-cumbia “Spug Life.” 

Safe Passage will be released by Wonderwheel on September 18th, 2020 and will be available on vinyl, CD and digitally.
