Originally intended as the title track for ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS 2009 debut album WE ARE TO ANSWER, the song did not make the final cut for the album and remained among the hidden musical treasures of KABANJAK´s Evergreen Studio. Then in 2015, the song was rediscovered and made a free download on ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS Soundcloud page. 

Since that day, the song has gained nearly 80,000 plays on Soundcloud, inspiring Switchstance Recordings to officially release the song on all digital platforms worldwide. 

WE ARE TO ANSWER is not only a rediscovered song by ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS, but a stellar example of their trippy trademark style of dope beats mixed with deep organic grooves. A stripped-down melody combined with heavy drums and a groovy bassline build the foundation of this song and take listeners on an interplanetary space voyage with these two musical Astronauts. And when the beautiful guitar melody kicks in at the end, listeners are fully propelled into the cosmos of outernational dopeness by the Astronauts known as KABANJAK and DOGU.

Consisting of 5-Star, O’Nill & Nivek, Dezert Eez formed at Western Michigan University, located in Kalamazoo, MI (the “Microbrew Capital”) and after performing on the local circuit for a year, the trio began making waves in Detroit’s underground scene.  

In early 2005, Dezert Eez released its first mixtape, The Realness, which won widespread critical praise that focused especially on the group’s lyrics. The buzz helped them earn a raft of high-profile outside gigs, including shows with KRS-1, Dead Prez, Slum Village and a mini tour with Wu Tang Clan’s Inspectah Deck.

Dezert Eez leapt to a bigger stage in 2008 when 5-Star teamed up with C-Rayz Walz, Killah Priest, and Bronze Nazareth to form The Almighty.  The album also featured hip hop legends Canibus, Keith Murray, and Planet Asia.  In 2009, Dezert Eez inked a deal with Universal and released their debut album Ghettobox. 

Since then, the group has released two mixtapes, Call of Duty: The Black Ops, which featured Raekwon, Killah Priest, La the Darkman, One.Be.Lo and Bronze Nazareth and We Own the Summer which featured One.Be.Lo, Mike Posner and Mos Def.

The name Dezert Eez (Desert Eagle) is symbolic of a weapon created in Israel and then later brought to the states to be manufactured much like the Original Man.   The group’s very first recording together was entitled “Declaration of War,” and now with their new upcoming album Magnificent Swords and Fly Jewelz, Dezert Eez comes full circle with the projects lead-single “Riot Gear” featuring Dead Prez.  

Dezert Eez’s Magnificent Swords and Fly Jewelz will be released this fall.

Fans of East Coast rap stalwarts Sadat X and El Da Sensei have been anticipating something collaborative from the duo known as XL for several years, and it’s finally come to fruition today with the first hint of their group titled release, a non-album standout in "We Must Stand."

If the soul-sampling production here sounds at all familiar, that’s because it’s handled by none other 9th Wonder. The North Carolina producer laced these two living legends with pure, neck-snapping fire that they use to kick knowledge about their worldwide travels, staying independent in a shady industry, and simply keepin’ it movin’. And you better stick around for the final verse, where the two MCs trade bars before giving way to Belgian turntablist, DJ Iron’s track-closing cuts.

Over three years in the making, ZIK ZAK is an African musical odyssey, featuring some of the freshest talent from nine countries on the mother continent. Tying this remarkable range of artists together are German production team ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS, weaving the vocal talents of the African singers into their distinctive “Boom Dub” sound. Drawing on Hip Hop, Dancehall, Roots Reggae, Bass Music, Soul, Electronica and Breakbeat, the production incorporates live instruments and musical influences from all over Africa and its diaspora. 

The concept behind all these tracks is ZIK ZAK (“Zig-Zag” in English), mapping out each artist’s life of tragedy and success, in a context of global inequality and ruthless capitalism. This album responds to the urgent need to understand the daily struggle for survival by creative artists and musicians from the global south. Each artist gives a unique voice to their rocky way through the contemporary African landscape, revealing a new perspective from a different city, country, religion, and ideology. This is ZIK ZAK.

It's easy to forget how much harder it is for artists and musicians to survive away from the relative comfort of the richer parts of the world. In Africa, employment levels are shockingly low and the welfare state non-existent, so that most artists live in a state of constant precariousness, with nothing to fall back on when the music industry fails to pay. Yet the mainstream African music industry constantly feeds us a capitalist wet dream, with fantastical images of artists living a “bling-bling” lifestyle of fast cars, swimming pools and supermodels with inflated chests. The artists featured on ZIK ZAK have all rejected this preposterous mythology, instead bringing us real messages from their everyday lives, demonstrating more talent, creativity and authenticity in a single album, than in a lifetime of over-produced, commercial music videos.

In ZIK ZAK, particular focus is on the intense and vibrant scene in Uganda, where local, mutant forms of Afrobeats and Dancehall have evolved away from the more familiar, globalized products of Nigeria and Jamaica. ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS established a base and partnership with local studio East African Records, allowing them to dig deep in the wells of talent in Uganda’s capital, Kampala. Elsewhere, they established friendships and musical relationships with enlightened artists as far afield as Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya, Burkina Faso, Togo, Guinea and Senegal, in many cases meeting the artists in person. DOGU, the DJ of ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS, toured East Africa twice with artists on the album, spreading the gospel of ZIK ZAK across festivals, clubs and bars in the region. Even in their hometown of Cologne, the production team engage with diaspora artists, recording the percussion for ZIK ZAK with the African drummers and percussionists of DOGU´s party series Family Affairs Cologne – Afro Urban Club Session. 

The ZIK ZAK project has provided these underground African artists an opportunity to reach a new worldwide audience, building on the success of ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS. 

For the ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS, this new album is an important project both musically and ideologically. In their own words: “With ZIK ZAK, we want to give a platform to young talents from Africa that are too good to ignore – they must be heard internationally. Africa is our motherland too, in the end. Civilization comes from Africa and that´s where rhythm comes from. After too many years of slavery and exploitation of the African countries, it is time to shine light on the great talent of Mother Africa.”
