This is the shorter version of a much longer track to be titled "Dr. Locrian's Asylum," from the forthcoming album Exhibits from the Imaginary Museum, a collection of music inspired by the works of Thomas Ligotti (<a href="http://www.ligotti.net">http://www.ligotti.net</a>).

Some neat info about this composition: it's primarily in A Locrian, though centered around the D. The restatement of the main theme at the end, though, is in D Locrian for a somewhat odd, unbalanced feeling. The main theme was created by assigning the degrees of the A Locrian mode to the letters of the alphabet, starting with octave 4 and going up to octave 7. Then, I spelled out the name DR HARKNESS LOCRIAN using the assigned notes. And that's where the melody prettymuch came from!

aRvin Clay is my boy: he's not only a genius when it comes to programming synths to create the most outlandish sounds I've ever heard, he can sculpt audio into alien soundscapes that deform the fabric of spacetime. This track was an attempt to create a song that sounds like something *he* would write! It's a mixture of spastic beats, eerie synth textures, paleoindustrial noises, and shattered loops. Part of the "For My Peeps" series of tracks dedicated to various friends, influential artists, and hot chicks. Done entirely in Renoise 2.5.

Leyla Fahada (http://www.myspace.com/leylafahada) is one of the most beautiful, sweet, and talented women I've ever had the distinct pleasure to meet. She's a bellydancer in the Washington, DC area, and is an amazing dancer. I met her in October of 2008 when she danced at the wedding of two very dear longtime friends, and I was enraptured within minutes. I still am. She's not only a wonderful dancer, she's also a wonderful person.
  
This track, transliterated as "Bekol basata, madarsh asheel enaya mennek wenty eb tor'osy," means, in Egyptian Arabic, "I love to watch you dance" (well, more or less). I wrote it especially for Ms. Fahada. It's a combination of sultry sha'abi rhythms, smokey synths, and a touch of cinematic drama--the kind of music you'd expect to hear playing in a Delta casbah in the year 2050 as some gorgeous young woman with hazel eyes dances like the earthly avatar of Wadjet herself.
  
Writing this piece has, incidentally, inspired me to start work on a series of related "futuristic Egyptian" songs that will be released under the title _eGypt_ sometime this year.

Funny story about this track: I have a friend who's...well, more than a little homophobic. He wanted me to make a mix CD of metal tracks for him, so I threw together some Hammerfall, Dio, Dimmu Borgir, oldskool Metallica, etc.--and then appended this track, which didn't even have a name yet, to the end as a "hidden track." A few days after I gave him the metal CD, he calls me up all affronted, telling me that last track was going to "make him gay if I listened to it too much...but it's really catchy anyway!" So I decided to call it "The Gay (It's Catching)."

Feedback, anyone? I've never before posted a work in progress, mainly because I've never before worked this hard on something--but I've been studying music theory and orchestration lately, and have been pushing the envelope of my own and my softsynths' musical capacity. This track is the lead to an album which will be called Exhibits from the Imaginary Museum, a collection of soundtrack pieces based on the fiction of Thomas Ligotti. Since my favourite Ligotti story is "Dr. Locrian's Asylum," most of the pieces on the album are in the Locrian mode--the most beautifully dissonant and off-kilter mode of them all! Anyway, if y'all have any comments, please throw 'em at me! Also, the only reason THIS track is not available for download is because it's unfinished--the finished version will be downloadable as always!

Derek C. F. Pegritz is not a band. He is barely even a person.
