Why I Sing

Derek Dittmar is a legally blind musician from Raleigh, North Carolina, who is studying music and communications at Randolph-Macon College. His music, crafted with the pop sensibilities and soul of some of today's hit singer-songwriters (John Mayer, Jason Mraz) is influenced by his pop punk roots (Fall Out Boy, Go Radio) and is flavored with inspiration from the storytelling talents of country artists (Zac Brown Band, Train). His songs focus on the struggles in life such as living with disability, relationships, and depression, attempting to carry a message of hope and expectation for better things to come. Dittmar started playing the bass guitar at age 11 and taught himself acoustic at 16. He can often be found holding forth on the darkened stages of coffee shops or boisterously leading groups of musicians in new arrangements of top-40 songs to the enjoyment, entertainment, and often consternation of his audiences.
