Bio:
Simon Green, AKA Bonobo, is an artist very much at the peak of his significant powers. His 2010 album ‘Black Sands’ was the high watermark of his career to date; a masterful record, marrying Green’s inimitable melodic genius to cutting edge electronics, bass and drums. Black Sands went on to sell over 160,000 copies worldwide, and since its release, Bonobo has toured the world with his live band, wowing audiences of thousands at a time with the hypnotic, extended live versions of the album’s tracks. He amassed more than 50 million recorded plays on LastFM and over 300,000 likes on Facebook.

All this comes as the result of over ten years hard work, and five albums that have honed Green’s skills. A born musician, Green – like many artists – expresses himself most articulately via his music. The result is that his work is always keenly felt, and always feels imperative. There are no wasted moments, and always myriad great ones.

It’s tempting to relate Green’s yearning, emotive aesthetic to his upbringing in rural Hampshire. His move to Brighton is also an influence; his skill at drum programming perhaps harking back to his days DJing and producing in the small, musically fertile town. Under the initial guidance of Tru Thoughts’ Rob Luis and at nights such as Phonic:hoop, Bonobo found an early education in music.

His first album – 2000’s ‘Animal Magic’ – was released via Tru Thoughts before being picked up by Ninja Tune. It announced him as a serious talent; able to bring a true musician’s edge to electronic music, with all the freedom that skill allowed. His subsequent albums for Ninja, Dial M for Monkey and Days to Come, developed his sensibility, won him fans across the globe, and saw him develop his live show into a mesmeric re-working of his records.

He also worked hard as a DJ, a part of Green’s arsenal that perhaps truly came into its own at the same time as Black Sands was generally welcomed as his best album to date. 2012 saw Green take the uptempo, club re-edits of Black Sands from a seminal Boiler Room performance in London to dance floors across the world, and unveil a new light show that further enhanced the impact of these stunning songs. A remix album was released featuring reworkings by fans and peers such as Machinedrum, Floating Points, Mark Pitchard, Lapalux and Falty DL.

Later the same year, he finally settled down in his New York studio to write his fifth studio album. Now, in 2013, he stands ready to take things up yet another notch. The North Borders is another long stride forward – both a natural evolution and a continuation of the electronic palette of Black Sands. Thematic, resonant, addictive and perfectly formed, it’s a thrillingly coherent statement piece. With vocal features from no less than Erykah Badu, as well as Grey Reverend (Cinematic Orchestra) and Cornelia (Portico Quartet) it’s another finely balanced body of work, leaving room for the beautiful, rich productions themselves to breathe and shine.

What a difference a year can make for us at Symbiosis Gathering. 2015 was our first year playing the festival and we were blown away by the vibe at our Thursday Desert Hearts Takeover of the Juke Town stage. While that party was awesome, we knew if given the opportunity of a headlining slot on Friday, we could create something really special for such a vibe oriented and open minded crowd. 

This year we were given that ultimate opportunity to really show the beautiful people of Symbiosis what Desert Hearts is all about. With an all day takeover of the Swimbiosis Stage on Friday, we were given the keys to the castle and asked to do anything we wanted for 6 hours. It was the ultimate privilege to throw the ultimate party. Outside of playing on our home court at our Desert Hearts Festivals, the DH Takeover at Symbiosis was probably the best party we’ve ever played. It was like Spring Break on house, techno, & love steroids. We even had a 360 degree Funkworks Funktion-One system to make us feel right at home. From the DJ booth to the horizon, we were surrounded by a sea of people dancing as hard as possible. This is what Symbiosis is all about and we can’t thank the organizers enough for letting us spread our message of love so far and wide. Now get ready to relive one of the best parties we’ve ever played.

This Desert Hearts Festival was incredibly special to us for too many reasons to count, but the reason that's always been paramount for us is the amount of love we have for our friends and family that have grown with us along the way. When we approached the decks for our grand finale set on Monday afternoon, it only felt right to invite some of our best friends to play alongside us for our favorite victory lap session. First we grabbed OG DH residents Justin Campbell, Kevin Anderson, Dink! & Tara Brooks to join in. Then we saw Evan Casey & Malcolm Brown dancing in the crowd and waved them onto stage to join the party. Finally, one of our oldest friends and heads of Pile Palace, Iwata, came on stage to say goodbye and we asked him if he had his music on him USBs. His eyes lighting up, we couldn't have dreamed to play such a triumphant, celebratory set alongside all of our favorite people. It was such a special moment and you can listen to it in all it's glory here.

What’s up Desert Hearts Family,

We’re proud to share with you our 5.5 hour Desert Hearts Crew Closing Set from Monday afternoon at our 2018 Festival. We wanted to kick things off with this mix because the party on Monday is generally our favorite party of each festival. These closing sets are often as eclectic as it gets because we pretty much play anything we want to hear on the Funktion-Ones one last time. It’s also the time when all of our staff and volunteers who’ve been working all weekend are finally off the clock to celebrate one last dance with the family. Word must be getting out about this party because we couldn’t believe how packed the dance floor was at 7:45pm when we finally shut it down. This set was supposed to be 4 hours, but straight up, we didn't want to stop playing. The vibe was too incredible this Desert Hearts and we didn’t want it to end. We hope this journey brings you back to the magic that we all experienced 2 weeks ago. We’re eternally grateful for this community and we love you all.
