After a year of guest mixing for various music sites and radio stations such as Beats In Space, Noise In My Head, Made Like A Tree, Tambora Radio, Joe's Bakery, Racket Racket, iCrates, PlayGroundMag and Rotating Souls I keep getting the same question: Will you make more Mixturas? Here is my answer - let the journey continue!

Hot on the sold-out heels of the three previous Svart-issued early 80’s synth pop and underground electronic music compilations (Satan in Love, Dance For Your Life, Cold War On The Rocks comes the last part of the quadrilogy: Black Hole, that reaches the final frontier of collectable cult synth disco music: privately released and completely unreleased music from 40 years ago.

 

Black Hole has been again compiled by Mikko Mattlar, whose encyclopedic knowledge in the field of Finnish electronic music produces 20 cuts of electro-cult has helped him dig up 20 cuts of rare groove from obscure regional compilation records, seven inches of which only a test pressing exists, demo tapes and privately financed singles. Stylistically the compilation moves from 1979 disco funk as performed by Peak Funktion on their unreleased record to homebrewed synth visions by late 80’s bedroom wizards.

 

Interesting curiosities among the 20 tracks include the riveting dance number by Jarkko Väljä, who received some fame back in the day as a Michael Jackson impersonator, and released one 7” single, that has become an expensive rarity.  Another thing you wouldn’t believe existed at all if it wasn’t included here is “Israel Is Real” by We, a short-lived gospel vocal quartet, accompanied here by a drum machine and a synthesizer, which makes for an unforgettable and surprisingly catchy four minute piece of underground gospel disco from 1983.

 

The compilation Black Hole – Finnish Disco and Electronic Music From Private Pressings and Unreleased Tapes 1979-1991 will be released by Svart Records on double vinyl and CD on October 14th.

Another long overdue one coming in for number 3 in our mix series, from one of our residents; Dr Smorsli.
Samir's easily one of the most talented DJs in Sheffield, and after years of playing with the Pretty Pretty Good gang we snapped him up to join us after they threw their final party. We've been meaning to upload one of his mixes since we started the series, but due to hard-drive misfortunes it kept not happening.
With time on all our hands, we asked him to put something together for us and as expected, it's phenomenal... In his own words, "now seemed an apt a time as any to send out something chirpier and positive."

Unfortunately due to the quarantine this one departs from the usual system of recording live at the party, but he's put together this mix of "virtual hugs and kisses" for us from his living room in a single take for that live effect.

After a barn-storming launch to the Islander Cast series, we are excited to bring you this fantastic second instalment from Amsterdam based selector, MUREAU...

Robert Mureau, better known as MUREAU, is an 80s kid from Amsterdam keeping the 80s vibe alive. All it took was a perfect disco party to wake him from the dark depths of his techno mania - beautiful people with smiling faces, flamboyant clothing whilst not taking life to too seriously and united by the boogie. We like him for this broad selections whether its African, Italo and Arabic  disco, wave, electro, high NRG or something in between his selections won't fail to set your pulses racing. 

"As a big fan of the D.I.D. Selects Series, this mix is inspired by the versatile sound the D.I.D folk capture in their sets. This set also felt like one big fun experiment, mixing up styles and geographies - starting slow and a little more serious, progressing towards a high energy ending!"
