Slam Jams is always one of the most fun elements of Holding Hands to put together because I get to combine a wide variety of banging slammy jammy vibes from across the board in one place.

This time I’ve got one track from returning peak time maestros not even noticed, one from myself (Desert Sound Colony) and two from label newcomers Mr Jones and DJ Merlín. Each one has a different flavour and it’s fair to say each one slaps harder than a 17th century gentleman brandishing his white glove.

My last full release came out over two years ago and in the mean time I’ve mainly been busy parenting it up with my two girls. Music took a bit of a back seat and I think you can all agree that that is probably fair enough.
Now they’ve grown up a bit I’ve finally got some time to get back in the studio and twiddle the old knobs again and boy has it been a joy! I don’t think I realised how much I had missed making freaky bass lines and shooting lazer sounds...

With this EP James Bangura has definitely taken me to another place musically. It certainly is the deepest record on any of the Holding Hands labels and yet I was so drawn to the tracks. Something about the weight of the sub just called to me and then shot me off into an imaginary club space. I could feel myself swaying with my eyes closed in a dark space with enormous subs and it felt right.

There is a real dream like quality to this collection and at the same time there is level of bite just beneath the surface. You listen and float but at the same time there is a sense of unease that comes from the off-kilter rhythms and sounds that appear from time to time.

They may not be the straight to the face hair raisers that you might expect from a release that I’m involved in but you will find that if you take them to the right space they will definitely have the power to create impact and moments of insight.

Two years ago, after Covid sent the industry into a tailspin I made the sad decision to stop pressing Holding Hands records to vinyl. This was gutting as the label had been putting records out from the first release and it had always felt like an integral part of the label’s identity.  

It sucked but I always hoped that in the future I would be able to feel confident in pressing records again and I am so happy to say that the time has finally come again!
Earth Trax popped into my inbox with some demos and I instantly knew there was something special here. The tracks are absolutely timeless and will do the business on any dancefloor from now until the end of time.

The A sides have more of loopy club quality that you could listen to all night. The sort of thing that you just lose yourself to when it comes on in the club. You aren’t sure exactly when it came on but you suddenly realise that you’ve been gurning with your eyes closed for some indeterminate amount of time. Basically, they’re very chewy loops (note to self: potential cereal idea).

The B sides have more of a…for lack of a better word, B side quality to them. They’re both broken and they make me want to move my body from side to side in a sort of jagged cool 80’s way. Ones to make you move and think at the same time.

After the success of their first release, DSC – Far Reaching/Too Hard, Holding Hands is back with their sophomore outing and as before it is taking no prisoners.

Inspired by a Nicolas Lutz set as he warmed up Fabric for Villalobos a couple years back, the Furnace has a break beat that will push the subs of any club to the limit. With every build and drop it increases in momentum until you are left with no choice but to throw down on the dance floor with unbridled passion. The Furnace may be all about the big beat but it is no one trick pony. The tune has a depth and weirdness to it that will certainly keep you coming back for more…

The Sorcerer is a collaboration with good friend of DSC’s, Guava. It is made up largely of recorded percussion and vocals at DSC’s studio in South London, which gives it a very special swing on the dance floor. The track lulls you into a false sense of security for the first third before finally letting the big freakiness out of the box. This is one for any DJ that wants to leave clubbers going nuts and scratching their heads at the same time.

Aunt Wendy’s Wedding In Wales is the sort of track that sends dance floors completely nuts. Breakbeat grooves and behemoth bass lines rock any sound system you choose to let it loose on. The tune is inspired by the sounds of Oblong and Plank records but don’t worry, it’s not just a throwback record. I C Jangles is a collaboration between Desert Sound Colony and Baby Rollen (one half of Voyeur) The only word you can really use to describe this tune is ‘stinker!!!’ Somewhere between 2step, grime and house is where it sits, and it could fit into any set of those genres without a doubt. It was written on one of the hottest days of the summer and for that reason the background is littered with the refreshing sounds of the drinks being poured in the studio. Essential play for when you need a little hydration.

Well you know what they say, home is where the heart is. I must say it feels all nice and warm to be back on the label myself as Desert Sound Colony.

I’ve put together a few more rippers for you to enjoy. I hope they serve you well in the club and spin a few people from one side of the dance floor to the other. Imagine everyone’s brains are attached to yoyos and you have control of them. You could metaphorically be walking the dog with their minds if you play these at the right time. Doesn’t that sound appealing...?

It is too awkward for me to ‘big up’ my own productions in the way that a normal press release seems to want, so I will just say that I have been playing these three out for the last six months and the results have been pretty much as described in the paragraph above. They are aimed straight at the dance floor, peak time tackle for when you also want to get everyone feeling pretty weird. Expect swingitty swung rhythms throughout and the feeling of having a rave in a drainpipe.

Ahhhh the joys of creating a new label! I have started Holding Hands Again to bring to light some records from the past that I adore and think should be made more widely available so that everyone can slam them in the club.

Bushwacka! is without a doubt one of the main influences behind the main Holding Hands label. His UK take out house and techno then lead onto his groundbreaking labels Oblong and Plank that have inspired many of the generations that came after him. I love those breaks releases and play a lot of them in my sets but my favourite of his cuts are actually his super early releases that he put out on his own label Sound As A Pound. Volume 1, 2 and 3 are packed with gems and sound just as original today as they did in the mid 90s. They are incredibly rare and sought after by any DJ who knows their stuff, which is why I am so pleased to be able to share three of my favourite tracks from those releases.

I chose three that covered a broad range of sound. Loopy trippy house, techno with a ton of soul and one straight up classic house banger. I have also done a garage remix of track 8 myself to bring another spin on his unique sound.

This re release has been freshly remastered for maximum boost and sounds fat as fuck on a system.

There is something about the groove on DJ Mau Mau’s early releases that just gets me and everyone within earshot moving wildly each and every time a track of his gets slammed in the club. His tunes go hard for sure, but the rhythm and vibe seems to be something hits people universally. 

Hell’s Club has been on my want list on Discogs for years and that prohibitive price really left me no choice but to reissue the damn thing. I have played it every single set since I got the new masters back and it is so effective at getting a crowd moving. Tech house at it’s absolute best. 

D+ is a total mammoth. The weird organ samples in the first half of the track really freak people and then it gets serious real quick... This one bangs but as usual with DJ Mau Mau, the bass line is actually funky as fuck underneath. 

JMRB brings a bit of lightness to the EP. Funky and loopy with the synths and then rollin’ and swayin’ with the drums and bass. Perfect for that mid set vibe. 

Finally, I made a little edit of Breakers In Space to make it a bit more dance floor ready. It’s a back and forward of a spacey break and a hard slamming groove. It was made with the end of the warm up in mind and has been proving very effective for that moment in my sets. 

This re release has been freshly remastered for maximum boost and sounds fat as fuck on a system.

I know it sounds completely obvious and all that but it really does feel like a bit of a landmark to be putting out the 10th Holding Hands record. What started as an outlet to release my own music has become so much more already, namely small family of artists who I believe are writing some of the music exciting dance floor slammers in the world. Almost everyone on the label is a long time friend of mine, often reaching back 10-15 years and it is a real privilege to be able to put out this amazing music and to watch it get such a great reaction from all you legends out there!

The 10th release comes from two of my best mates, Gallegos who I have known since he came up for a weekend of ridiculousness in my second year at Leeds to stay at another close friend Conor’s house. He is one of the best story tellers I have ever met and if you ever get to know him then you can look forward to many a riveting tale. He is also a criminally under appreciated producer and I hope that this release will do something to help get his name onto many more people’s lips.

He somehow manages to get the perfect and very difficult to achieve balance of melancholy, ferocity and banging-ness into his music. I find myself playing it when I’m driving home late at night after a show and getting totally transported to places far and wide. One minute you’re crying and hugging your best friend along to SHOULDACOULDAWOULDA and the next second you find yourself pulling shapes and faces you didn’t know you could whilst Blue Mountain or B45 slam you straight in the face.

Baby Rollén is another close friend from Leeds who I have shared a residency with for 8 years at Flux. We have appeared a couple of times together as collab artists, once on Holding Hands for I C Jangle, on Nick Hoppner’s Touch From A Distance for Glixen and on Futureboogie for the Beta Burner EP. He is a total genius on the buttons and one of the slickest DJs I know. On top of that he is total joy to write tunes with in the studio (See pouring sparkling water and flicking his finger in his cheek on I C Jangles for further proof) His mix downs are as toit as a tiger and sound reedonkulous in the club. Just check out B45 and Underwater Excursions and see what I am talking about.

These ones are face melters of the highest temperature so please wear the appropriate goggles and masks when listening.

As is the norm with Holding Hands I very rarely release anything by someone I’m not already close to and Harry is no different. We run our party Sock It To Me along with Dr. Banana and Alec Falconer and are in the process of setting up a label together as well.

Harry starting sending over bits and pieces about a year ago that he thought might sit well on the label and I was completely in love with basically everything that he threw my way. In the end this EP has come out very well rounded in my opinion with a good mix of heavy, sneaky and melodic goodness strewn throughout.
 
Sarky is a total snakey breaky weapon, M1 is a sunset cruiser for the summer months, Howzat is a classic Holding Hands dance floor destroyer and Nudge is a back pack full of sleaze to get you groovin’ at the end of the night.

Back once again. This one is coming live and direct from Baltimore in the mid 90s. It is the second and final part of the Gargoyle Classics reissues and it’s packed full of juicy juicy dance floor goodness. As with the previous Gargoyle record it is raw as they come. Hitting hard whilst feeling totally impromptu and freestyled as well.

Two of the tracks are reissues from Tony & Don’s Gargoyle imprint and two of them, just like last time are never before released tracks written during the same period. After the success of the first Slam Jams last year it seemed like an obvious shout to return for a second trip round the mulberry bush. This edition has two label stalwarts Breaka and Guava in fine form, slamming it and jamming it till the cows come home. Coming in at 160bpm Loose Subs is also the first track on the label to start reaching the lofty heights that all you nasty speed freaks are after. Outerbody Innerspace takes the tempo back down but in no way takes the foot off the pedal. Freaky deaky shit from start to finish.

On the second A side it is time to bring a couple new faces into the fold. Lrds from North London sent me through this absolute steam roller of a demo and it just felt so god damn right. This tune was destined for Holding Hands the second it was bounced out of his computer. Finally the man from Russia Dawn Razor comes correct with one of the deepest but certainly also one of the fattest tracks I’ve had the pleasure of releasing on the label. It’s a proper pleasure to put out a track from him as he was one of the first people to start sending me demos when the label started a few years ago. It takes a serious wallop fest of a track to cut it’s way through all the noise and this spicy number achieves that before it’s even got out of bed in the morning. Fair fuckin’ play mate.

I’m back on home turf for the first release of 2021 and boy does it feel good. As is customary with my releases of the last couple of years I have put together a four tracker with varying styles but all within the realm of the bangeroo. Two of these were written during my livestreams (Two Rums Please & ODA) and that makes them feel extra special as it was a bit of a team effort from the stream crew. Big love to everyone who tuned in and helped me finish these puppies off. Lokus and Synthetic Nixon are the two slightly deeper cuts and I am feeling pretty desperate to give them an outing on a system one day in the future.

One little note is that the catalog number is HHANDS016 because of pressing plant delays with 015. That will be coming out after this.
