We are delighted to premiere,  "Goyo Tuyero", a brand new song from Venezuelan avant-garde folk outfit, Insólito UniVerso, completed during the recent lockdown.  Officially to be released digitally on July 21st, but available from today as a Bandcamp exclusive, alongside "Jota", via Olindo Records.

On their 2018 Olindo Records debut, “La Candela del Río”, Paris-based quartet Insólito UniVerso took inspiration from a wide range of sources, from psychedelic folk & electronic experimentation, to traditional Latin American music, particularly through the rhythms and instruments of Venezuelan folklore. Mixed by The Heliocentrics’ Malcolm Catto and Fumaça Preta’s Alex Figueira, the album was hailed far and wide, championed by Bandcamp Weekly and shortlisted for Best Group of the year in the 2020 Songline Awards.

“Goyo Tuyero'' is a whirlwind of keyboards, synths and maracas. It transforms keyboardist Edgar Bonilla’s transcription of a phone recording he made many years ago of legendary Venezuelan harpist José Gregorio (Goyo) López playing a fantastic & otherworldly composition of his own at an intimate family gathering. Written in the style of a joropo tuyero rhythm from central Venezuela, Goyo Lopez was drawn to its distinctive character, which differentiates it from the joropo llanero of the plains where he was born and raised. Far from simply replicating the style, López jumps unexpectedly out of harmony, giving the sensation of being thrown into outer space. This exact feeling is emphasized in this version adapted for keyboards by adding synths, whilst Andrés Sequera supplies maracas with an added sting.

A Foldedspace Special - Charles Tolliver: A Legend In Music - 8/11/20

South African artist/beatmaker Spoek Mathambo’s latest project is his meditation on the healing properties of bass, having used stripped down bass dubs as therapy during the most strenuous parts of 2020. The title, Hikikomori Blue refers to the Hikikomori social phenomenon of modern-day hermits  (Japanese: ひきこもり or 引きこもり, lit. "pulling inward, being confined"). 

Spoek Mathambo is a South African artist, musician, songwriter & filmmaker. With four critically acclaimed solo albums in his catalogue,  not to mention his collaborative band projects Fantasma and Batuk, and a documentary on SA electronic music (Future Sound of Mzansi), Spoek Mathambo is a prolific creative, showcasing and stretching the limits of electronic music and hip hop.

With Hikikomori Blue, Mathambo boldly strips away the 4/4 beats he’s known for and focuses on the polyrhythmic funk of gnawa gimbri and the belly rattling swing of dub bass. With less focus on the bassdrum, Mathambo keeps time with nimble percussion. The songs are a unique form of the blues, where Spoek Mathambo takes a wry look at matters of the heart, with irreverent rap verses about love gained and love lost.

Darker Than Wax’s final release of the year brings us back to the world of UK dance music with Dampé - the solo project of Joe Munday, a musician, producer and DJ from South London. Joe’s foundation in dance music stems from becoming a regular on the floor at influential parties like FWD>> and You’re A Melody. Dampé brings together these London sounds with worldwide influences and nuanced, ethereal production to create something entirely his own. With a string of releases on Berlin’s Dirt Crew Records, and a monthly show on the venerable Rinse FM, Dampé has carved out a space for his sonic brand of introspective, deep UK dance music. Spurred by a chance meeting with the Darker Than Wax crew in London in 2018, an instant relationship between artist and label flourished through our shared sonic ethos. After numerous setbacks from the chaos of 2020, we are proud to finally share Dampé’s label debut with the world – Oil.

A polished, wide-ranging work in its own right, Oil run’s the gamut from moments of lush, meditative sound design, to banging mutant-Bruk and flailing percussive dancefloor cuts. Kicking off with restless ambient excursion ‘Jawahar Park’, into the deep, evolving dancefloor affair with title track ‘Oil’, and rounding out with the shimmering slo-mo house of ‘Flora Waves’, the first side of the record showcases Dampé’s sonic range and his unique approach to forging new sounds. On the flip side, ‘Awning Slapper’ is the EP’s certified party starter led by distorted bass and accented with fleeting chords and percussion, while ‘Manzana’ brings us on a rhythmic excursion built on saturated found sounds and some made-for-the-Adriatic euphoric synth lines. Also featured on the record is a remix from Canadian producer Teo Mattress, putting his signature dreamy Vancouver-house spin on ‘Jawahar Park’. Despite travelling through a number of diverse auditory peaks and valleys, Oil oozes consistency and polish from front to back – a solid spin at home or in the club.
