Steve Bug's Dessous Recordings continues its fine run of releases, casting a critical eye back over its rich and varied output, and breathing new life into some of the highpoints. 

Phonique takes another bow - this time the focus is on 'Casualties', originally released on the highly rated 'Good Ideas' Long Player from 2007. As with Phonique's last Desclassics excursion, 'Casualties' features the vocal talents of Erlend Øye, bringing his trademark melancholic delivery to Michael Vater's stand-out production. 

Man-of-the-moment Burnski drops a stunning new rework, bringing a tech-y vibe, a shuffling groove and a devastating bassline to proceedings. 
What's more, a classic and classy mix from the legend Morgan Geist is also included -originally seeing the light of day in 2007 and still sounding as fresh as ever - Geist's signature analogue machines are all in full effect. The Antonio Eudi & Bruno Be Remix finds a new level of space in the mix, developing into an elegant, emotional deep house moment that will be as relevant to the club as it is to the headphones.

Last but not least is the extended version of 'Casualties - Phoniques's exceptional original mix that remains a benchmark for beautifully produced and heartfelt electronic pop music.

With 15 years of releases under their belt, Dessous Recordings present another Classics project. Longtime collaborator and label family member Phonique revisits his seminal 'For the Time Being‘ featuring Erlend Øye, pulling together all the remixes into one handy package. 

Alongside the original cut from 2004‘s 'Identification' long player, this release also features eight other remixes covering the house spectrum. 

Three new mixes for 2013 provide fresh takes on the track. Phonique's own 10 Years After Remix layers up the emotive synths into an evolving 8-minute epic while Bruno Be sets the control for outer space with his deep rework. Englander Burnski also delivers a club-ready bomb focusing firmly on the groove. 

Each sits perfectly alongside some of the hottest reworks from the label's past, including Alexkid's classy Cold Mix, Ripperton's deep and techy mix from 2009 joins Motorcitysoul's 2005 acidic workout – all making full use of Øye's haunting vocals. 

Neil Quigley's tough yet emotional tech-house perspective further underlines the versatility of Phonique's original material, while Funkagenda vs Trophy Twins' remake is aimed firmly at the main room floor. 

Beatport customers will also receive an exclusive new remix from Wehbba & Accioly – two rising stars of the Brazilian deep house scene.

James 'Burnski' Burnham is one of the UK's most prolific and talented house producers. Having already contributed a run of beautifully created records to the Dessous and Poker Flat catalogue, it’s time for his next elegantly crafted EP - 'Sometimes Takes Longer'

Title track 'Sometimes Takes Longer' fuses casual, classic deep house drums with a totally hypnotic synth theme, surrounded by liquid percussion, fantastic panning and filtered spacial effects and story telling elements. The track builds in the great tradition of true late night, atmosphere setting deep house.

Looking to the B side, 'There's A Culprit' swaggers along nicely with a post-chicago jack and a ballsy hook to boot. Burnksi's characteristic clean production and fine detailing set this tracky jam on fire, with its unique layered approach.

Finally the key-led house vibes of 'Watch Out' phase on to the scene. Pumping and energetic, it’s also another great story track, leading us deep into the night with powerful syncopated rhythms, heavy reverb swells and inventive moments in the arrangement.

With way over 100 releases and his own boutique house label Ladies & Gentlemen, Phonique has taken his signature grooves all over the world - more than 50 countries at last count. 

With countless production and remix credits plus three full albums under his belt, 'Saudade (Best Of Phonique)' is a timely reminder of what makes this artist such a treasure. With so much material to get through it's a wonder he managed to keep it to 11 tracks. 

Long time collaborator Erlend Øye features twice as a guest vocalist - 'For the Time Being' and 'Casualties' both being essential reference points in Phonique's back catalogue. Originally released in 2005, 'For the Time Being' could be the blueprint for many of today's nu-disco producers, while Antonio Eudi and Bruno Be's Remix of 'Casualties' shares a similar, lush and rolling groove - both are classic Vater - melancholic and uplifting at the same time. 

Another landmark collaboration in Vater's discography was with Ian Whitelaw, whose sublime vocals feature on 'Our Time Our Chance' and 'You That I'm With'. Originally released on Phonique's first album 'Identification' in 2004, 'You That I'm With' is a gorgeous slice of electronic synth pop, while 'Our Time Our Chance' from 2010 is more focused on the deeper reaches of the dance floor, and was widely regarded as one of the tracks of that year. 

Elsewhere on 'Saudade', (Portuguese for a brooding kind of melancholy, and a suitable description of Vater’s signature sound), Phonique continues to display his passion for collaboration with talented vocalists. 'One Step 2010' and 'Feel What You Want' highlight the divine sound of Rebecca while 'Endless Love' showcases Louie Austen - whose 'Glamour Girl' is also included via Phonique's Original Version. His deft touch for creating affecting and beautiful electronic pop music with strong links to the dance floor is fully in evidence on every track, and non more so than his rework of 'Ornette's Crazy' - a huge hit in 2012 on Get Physical that still sounds as thrilling today as it did the day of release. 

Probably the most straight up dance floor track here is 'Divertimento' - a deep burner with slight Latin swing to it - no doubt a result of Phonique's strong links to the underground scene in Brazil.

Steve Bug's outlet for his more deep and soulful side perfectly captures the summer vibe. 15 cuts from Dessous artists set the tone - deep, lush, and rolling electronic music for long sunny days and outdoor parties.

Plenty of label regulars share some top quality cuts, including two tracks from Phonique with Erlend Øye, a pair of stormers from Echonomist, and two versions of Vincenzo & Language's epic jam 'Merry Go Round'.

The third 12-inch on Dessous from the Leipzig-based house duo Gamat 3000, aka Daniel Scholz and Matthias Tanzmann, marked another strong step for the pair. Tanzmann, resident DJ at the legendary Distillery Club and founder of the respected German deep house label Moon Harbour Recordings, joined forces with Scholz once again to produce another pearl of modern house: Whispering.

Alongside the original, the record featured two remixes. Chris Duckenfield, aka Swag, delivered an outstanding interpretation with his Softly Spoken Dub version, transforming the mellow grooves of Gamat 3000 into something distinctly his own.

Also included was a fantastic remix from Andreas Greiner, aka Frankman (also from Leipzig), who had recently made an impact with his debut release on Dessous Recordings (Make It Ruff, Make It Smooth / DES017).

„Good Idea“ is a twinkling rainbow, teeming with positive vibes and breathing the cosmopolitan creativity of a widely travelled mind.
The common ground of the close to thirty tracks (if you count the bonus CD) is the kind of modernity in Phonique‘s music which doesn‘t deny it‘s roots, but reflects a new, urban feel which has seldom been so successfully displayed.Although „Good Idea“ can be described as modern electronic music in the broadest sense, it‘s difficult to pigeonhole the album as it combines so many influences, ranging from Deep- to Electro-House, from Nu-Disco to HipHop, from Lounge to Minimal and Techno to Pop.
Phonique and his production partner Alex Krüger prove their outstanding versatility without sounding arbitrary. Every tune is well thought out, but still sounds fleet-footed and unbelievably fresh. Handplayed instruments like guitars and pianos fit smoothly in the soundscape adding a good portion of vitality.

The Pop-moments of the album are obvious enough to grab your immediate attention, but subtle enough to grant a longer and repeated listening pleasure that lets you discover more layers and aspects of the music.
Phonique managed to gather an array of illustrious guest musicians, mainly vocalists, around him. The album features the talents of well reputed artists like Erlend Øye (Whitest Boy Alive, Kings Of Convenience), Richard Davis, Ian Whitelaw, Shadee and Rodney Hunter of Aphrodelics, Data MC and Marc Hype as well as top electronic producers like Steve Bug, Gui Boratto, Vincenzo, Zoo Brazil, Badmouth (Mazi & Cass) and fresh talents such as Ruben or Liora.

The collaboration highlights of the album include „Casualities“ (feat. Erlend Øye) which merges uplifting airiness with melancholy in the distinctive Erlend way, the soulful „Worked It Out“ (feat. Ian Whitelaw and Meitz) and the powerful „Computer Kidz“ (feat. Shadee). But the flow of the entire album makes it difficult to pick out just a few tracks.

On the second, bonus CD (limited edition), you‘ll find the more dancefloor-dedicated facet of Phonique‘s creativity in a homogeneous and highly dynamic mix by Phonique. Another twelve all new Phonique tracks fall into place perfectly, ranging from deeper to Electro to more minimal and techy House tracks. The mix reflects the uniquely dynamic of a Phonique DJ set.

„Good Idea“ is definitely a strong musical statement, but not in a loudmouthy way. The album is fresh, inspiring and innovative without claiming to reinvent the wheel. It‘s a masterpiece by a sympathatic Berlin producer to make your summer a little nicer.

A label that DJs turned to time and time again for the fantastic and consistently high quality vibe it created on the dancefloor, Steve Bug‘s infamous Dessous imprint continued with its classics series.
After three heavily supported vinyl releases celebrating some of the most classic cuts from the Dessous back catalogue, remixed by some of the era‘s most sought-after artists, this special digital-only compilation was compiled so that all 12 remixes (including two hot new interpretations) were available in all their crisp and clean glory.

A real who‘s who at the forefront of the modern house world at the time, Steve Bug, Kevin Yost, Vincenzo, Phonique, Gruber & Nurnberg, Manuel Tur, Langenberg, Two Armadillos, Ripperton, Ryo Murakami, and new Dessous signing Claire Ripley all provided interpretations here, remixing tracks picked from across the spectrum in a look back at over 10 years of label history.

This heavyweight remixes package was headed off by Steve Bug‘s new version of The Discowboys‘ “At Midnight,” a smooth modern house gem in the making. Other standout pieces of stereo love included the two extra special Kevin Yost versions of Phonique‘s “Teenage Love”; the dub having featured on the vinyl release, showing off his classy world-renowned production skills.

There were so many important tracks to mention, with yet more priceless cuts coming courtesy of Manuel Tur, with his beautiful mini-epic treatment of D’Julz’s “Sulo,” and Ripperton on top form with a unique and equally magical remix of Phonique’s “For The Time Being,” featuring the vocal talents of Erlend Øye.

Just as was the case in the original tracks, which stood the test of time, there was depth, drama and dimension to be found amongst these superb versions. Here’s to Dessous, the classics, and the future classics!

The Young Brit shows his mastery of the form with an EP that combines effortlessly club-ready grooves with exceptional sound design and a strong melodic sensibility.

Dexter clearly know a thing or two about creating dance  oor moments, with each track exhibiting a classiness that belies his age.

Have It Like That kicks things off with a chugging, hypnotic feel and crisp drums providing the basis for a cool vocal hook and thick, warm bass.

No Time gets a shade deeper and no less funky, while Get To This points a little further towards the center of the dancefloor.

Superb deepness from a master of the genre. Vincenzo - a man that needs little introduction thanks to his tireless contribution to the house music scene via labels like Dessous, Poker Flat, Liebe*Detail, Winding Road, Beadrock, Anjunadeep, his own label Teardrop and many more - drops a brand new EP on the Dessous imprint.

Joined by Voyeurhythm chief Tyson Ballard for the title track, 'Malvern Road' is an epic 10 minute journey into space - drifting and evolving via acid squelches, pad washes and driven by a crisp, tight rhythm section.

'Follow' is a tougher proposition - adding a techy rumble and offset percussion to Vincenzo’s exceptional production.

'Melbs' is another groove-laden joint, built around a poly-rhythmic shuffle and deep, Detroit influenced chords, co-written and produced with Melbournian friend Mic Newman (also known as Fantastic Man for his releases on Fine Choice).

For the Beatport release 'Such Great Heights' completes this impressive release - a slow building intro leads into a euphoric, punchy jam for the floor.

London’s Chocky joins the Dessous Recordings label and shares four tracks of sublime house music on Steve Bug’s imprint. 

'Self Knowledge' is a deep, techy roller clocking it at nearly 10 mins - plenty of space to expand into its full potential - the groove grows ever more hypnotic and engaging as the track unfolds.

Next up is 'A Reefa' - a non too subtle reference to a certain herb that might have inspired this loose yet highly funky deep house jam.

'Casa De Estrela' changes the vibe up with a more direct and jacking track - even though it would work at prime time, Chocky’s feel for space and drama make sure the track will be heard in many diverse surrounding and sets this year.

Re-igniting the dancefloors twenty years after its original release, Steve Bug refreshes this classic Chez Damier production, originally from 1992. ‚Can You Feel It‘ is one of those classic New York / Chicago House jams that just defines a moment in dance music history. Dessous label boss Steve Bug arranges two special mixes that celebrate and re-juvinate this very special record.

Steve‘s straight up remix maintains the classic vibes with a sensitive 90s themed re-work that calls upon clean, fresh drums and smooth sub bass as its initial building blocks. The instantly recognisable vocal is included, as is the hey-day chord vibes and glorious US house melodies. Simply deadly in the right moments... A Re-Dub version is also included that spaces things out and opens up the strings in a breezy and superbly mixed club tool.

Chocky - Playtime EP 

The UK’s best kept secret Chocky returns to Dessous Recordings after the success of his first outing, the well received Self Knowledge EP. Here we see the talented DJ / producer drop four tracks via the Playtime EP - yet more sublime house music for Steve Bug’s imprint.

'Double Dip' is a chunky, stripped down vibe, reduced the vitals that will slay dancefloors - firing percussion over a shuffling groove and a cut-up vocal reminiscent of Pepe Bradock.

'Organism' is a deep affair - spacy pads provide the counterbalance to the tough drum track, softening the edges but keeping the vibe high.

'Soul Alive' taps into Chocky's clear appreciation for the 90s, with a strong vocal, atmospheric strings and a loose yet crispy beat.

'Playtime (Dub)' brings the whole EP home with yet another stormer - beginning as a driving basement jam but then introducing an unexpected piano riff that flips the script and takes things in a welcome jazzy direction.

Chocky - Double Dip

One of Dessous‘ key recording artists, and something of a legend in his own right, Phonique returns triumphant with his next EP: ‘Vincent Price‘, a digital only release. Three tracks of pushing, warm and melodic modern House music are presented with all the high standard and gusto that we‘ve come to expect from one of Berlin‘s longest standing producers.

Lead track ‘Vincent Price‘ is a conceptual slice of nu-wave electronic disco. Emerging elegantly from atmospheric field recordings, a haunting moog-style synth refrain leads us into open, warm and almost balearic zones. Wonderfully melancholic, and dramatically charged at its peak, ‘Vincent Price‘ could just as easily be the soundtrack to a stunning cine- matic scene, as it could be tomorrow‘s next club hit. A reduced and more straightforward ‚dub‘ version is also included for lovers of the hypnotic groove.

With its melodic flourishes and insistent, powerful groove, we are urged to ‘Turn Off The Lights‘ as ‘Baku‘ takes to the scene. Smooth, growing harmonic elements wash over us in ethereal glory as this emotional journey works its way into our psyche.

TOM FLYNN - PLUCK

Tom Flynn is no stranger to the upper stratospheres of house and techno - his long list of achievements and highlights would fill a page. Long since championed by the likes of Pete Tong, and with his own successful label Into Orbit under his belt, it’s a pleasure to see him release on Dessous Recordings with this exceptional three-tracker.

'Pluck' see’s the Brit on top form - a low slung groover with a deceptively loose swagger. A thick and full bottom end drives the track along with, tasteful percussion and keys to add some  avour along the way.

'Sunday Morning' Session leans more
to the techy side of things - a chugging, spacy track with an insistent kick - it clearly draws inspiration from the long nights on the floor.

'Off The Road' sits somewhere between the two previous cuts - diving into a more dub techno atmosphere. The beats are crisp and precise, the pads full of space and reverb - music to lose yourself in.

Thierry Tomas Pusher 

Already with a significant release history on labels such as Get Physical, Russian born Thierry Tomas (Evgeniy Nikolaev) is welcomed to Dessous for this  fierce EP. Tomas’s heart clearly lies with classic US deep house, and this lineage is present in his own productions, along with a strong dose of his own signature strain of house music.

'Pusher' is a groove-laden burner with a crisp, jazzy feel that taps into the classic new york vibe, but has the restraints not to become a pastiche. The playful vocals add to the fun.

'Piu Piu' also has that certain swing - a laid back groove that has enough punch to move any floor, but also gives the listener room to think.

'Doo Doo' brings a chugging groove to the fore, augmented with understated but incredibly funky congas. The cheeky vocals again show the lighter side of Tomas’s approach - there’s a sense of fun and humour in his productions that can often be missing from house and techno.

Closing out the release, 'Easy' is a deep bomb, somehow tipping its hat to the house explorations of Pepe Bradock or Mike Huckaby. Vocal samples provide some of the percussive heat, while low pads and crisply programmed drums bring plenty of vibe. Definitely a talent that should be watched in the coming months.

Berlin-based Dessous Recordings never disappoints. Steve Bug has built the label as a platform for his deep and vocal oriented house leanings, and manages to continually curate an incredibly prolific release schedule. So much so, that it is hard to stay on top of - luckily for us, the label occasionally gathers together tracks in a handy compilation, such as this We Like It Deep release.

The compilation is full of highlights from the label’s roster, including killer tunes from the likes of Langenberg, James Dexter, Tom Flynn, Vincenzo and Thierry Thomas. The vibe is exactly what Dessous had become famous for - deeply felt house music with tonnes of emotion and an innate feel for what works on the floor.

Originally dropping on vinyl only in 2015, Apes Go Bananas is both the name of the label, and that of the production team behind the mighty Kerri On. 

The duo happen to be Steve Bug and Clé, and the boys have decided to re-release the track on Dessous with a pair of killer remixes. 

The original still sounds fresh and raw, a continued homage to one of the greatest, with Chandler-esque crisp drums and deep, jazzy chords. 

First up on remix duties is James Dexter, the young Brit with the golden touch, who adds his distinctive take on the track. The drums knock hard and the groove is tightly wound, with the vocal snippets and spacey synth opening the vibe up. 

Langenberg, the Berlin producer and long time Steve Bug collaborator, also goes deep with his refix. The jazzy chords are brought to the fore, and the shaker-heavy groove snakes around the melody to create a sure-fire deep burner.

It’s been four long years since Steve Bug’s sublime deep house imprint blessed us with Classics Volume 01 – but when it comes Dessous Recordings – it’s worth the wait. Always ahead of the curve, the German label started as an outlet for the tastemaker and uber producer / DJ Steve Bug’s deeper urges – releasing a seemingly endless supply of fresh, smart sounds from some of house’s most renowned artists. No wonder this retrospective comes across as a celebration of a job well done – within its 20 tracks are some of the mostly finely constructed, emotional and downright dancefloor destroying grooves of this or any decade.  Nestled into its prized running order are indeed many classics, whether they be of the new, old or obscure type.  

Familiar faces make a welcome return – check out the contributions by long time collaborators Phonique, Solomun, Ryo Murakami, Vincenzo, Tanzmann and Stefanik – all dropping the genre defining slices of rich, hedonistic, elegant house music that have made their names in Europe and across the globe. As if proof was required that Dessous hasn’t rested on its laurels, several tracks from the last couple of years feature prominently – witness Moodymanc’s motor-funk detonations, Andrade’s twisted disco and Burnski’s deep pressure vibes.  What’s more, Giles Smiths’ Two Armadillos project takes its rightful place in the canon of classic Dessous releases, alongside vocal contributions by straight-up house legend Robert Owens via Dan Berkson and James What’s ‘Keep On’. 

In its 14 years history, Dessous has ridden a fair few sea changes in the choppy waters of house, yet has always retained its unique identity. Dessous Classics Volume 2 is a timely reminder of how quality wins through. Always relevant, always pushing things forward – here’s to many more years on the cutting edge.

Fresh on the trail of this year’s exceptional long player ‘Noir’, Steve Bug returns with perhaps his most deep house-oriented track in a while – ‘The Long Run’.

Teaming up with US house legend Mr. V, who inititally donated vocals only, the collaboration brought up Mr V‘s own interpretation of Bug‘s track. This release is as delicious a serving of classic New York deep house as you will hear all year – or any year.

Dessous’ main man is at the controls, riding out a sumptuous, Rhodes-driven groove that references golden era Kerri Chandler and friends, but remains completely rooted in 2012. Mr V’s spoken word vocal lays out the manifesto for these two house pioneers – both are committed to quality music, made with passion and respect.

Next stop on ‘The Long Run’ is Mr. V’s stunning take on the same track. Ratcheting up the percussive elements, the New York native injects hints of the Latin rhythms that define many of his productions, making this into a stone-cold club banger whatever the party.

Both tracks come with corresponding instrumental versions for the DJs, rounding out this irresistible release that continues Dessous’ outstanding run of releases this year.
