The mid-70s was tough time for New York. The city's reputation for crime and disorder still very much a part of residents daily lives - with then Mayor, Ed Koch repeatedly warning that the ‘dirt, crime, and racial tension continued to weaken the once great city’. 

The illegal drug trade flourished, causing a soaring murder rate, and dividing the city into areas ruled by different drug lords. The NYC Subway fell victim to a crime epidemic that saw more crimes being committed on the subway each year than in any other subway system in the world. Landlords would burn tenant buildings for insurance money – displacing hundreds of people.

Between 1970 and 1980, 40% of the South Bronx had been burned down or abandoned. 

From these ashes, NYC spawned and supported the birth of Disco, Hip Hop, Post Punk & New Wave. 

Here’s a love letter to those critical years - by no means a definitive list, but a collage of genres, loosely hanging together with the help of some tape delay. 

Musical nods to the people that drove this creativity; Afrika Bambaataa, Kool Herc, Larry Levan, François Kevorkian, Tee Scott, David Mancuso, John ‘Jelly Bean’ Benitez, Boyd Jarvis, Tony Humphries and artists like Keith Haring and Andy Warhol and the avant garde, art rock and self-proclaimed ‘freaks, dropouts and wackos’: Konk, Talking Heads, Pylon, Chic, The Ramones, Patti Smith, Liquid Liquid, Blondie & Suicide. 

This collective ‘sound’ would bleed out into the ether, through clubs and radio, out to Chicago and Detroit and ultimately, the world; Disco would mutate into House, Rap’s ‘five elements’ would settle into Hip-Hop and the low-fi, outsider aesthetic of Post-Punk & New Wave would continue to inspire the best of bands. Both then and now. 

Put together lovingly with two 1210’s, a two channel mixer and a space echo – here’s a snapshot of NYC 1978 – 1986 (mistakes and all).

Clyde Stubblefield played drums for James Brown for 6 years but his legacy has lasted a lot longer than that. His rhythms have been extensively sampled and particularly his 'Funky Drummer' break helped lay the foundations of Hip Hop, and later jungle and a whole world of electronic music.

Believe it or not it's been over 10 years since I’ve put together a recorded mix which I'm very ashamed to admit, after all it was my mix appearances on the radio, park jams or warehouses that originally establish my reputation well before I officially gained any type of DJ title! This mix is the 3rd in a series I've titled the missing mixes, its my apology to the my real Hip Hop family that encouraged and fuelled my creative ideas throughout the best parts of my career, I hope you all enjoy my selection of music which has always been down to personal taste, a responsibility that most of today's DJ’s seem to have forgotten, we play what we like not for popularity or beacuse we're told too, after all that's the way it's meant to be or what would be the point putting your name to something that everybody else has done before in the same old industry style!?! Finally some of the technical skill I demostrate throughout this mix for the unaware I PIONEERED them 20 + years ago, you’ve just been enforced! Here's a short old school breaks and beats mix that I put together for a bit of fun. Hope you enjoy........

DJ DESTRUCTION - B-BOY BREAKS MEDLEY PART 1.

In 1991/92 Destruction was a UK finalist in the DMC championships, which eventually led to taking steps into production. He is credited with CO-production on the highly acclaimed ‘Kaos’ album, released on EMI in 2001 and has worked with artists that can only be described as Hip Hop Royalty, (Redman, M.O.P, Capone-n-Noreaga, Pharoahe Monch, De la Soul, Guru and LL Cool J), the latter of which went platinum in the U.S and was a Billboard number 1 in its first week. The Redman single Smash Sumthin achieved a U.K top 10 and a gold disc to boot. Ross has since worked on remixes for Pay As You Go, Elephant Man, Kidda, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip and Flux Pavilion to name a few as well as completing 2 Lethal and Destruction albums, both of which were heavily rotated on 1Xtra and Kiss FM, leading him to work with  acts such as Canibus, Ric Atari, Leee John (Imagination), J2K (Roll Deep), Skibadee, Harry Shotta, Tor Cesay and Scroobius Pip. Destruction is currently a resident DJ for Scroobius Pip’s club night We.Are.Lizards held at The Book Club EC1 and Proud Camden.
