Label mainstays Fouk just dropped the perfect dancefloor Bomb with ‘Mirage’ paired with a high-octane Elisa Bee remix 

We all know Dutch duo Fouk from their soulful, bouncy take on house music. They’re also responsible for some of Heist’s biggest tracks like Kill Frenzy or their Lil Louis inspired 2021 release ‘Blue Steel’. On their new EP, the talented duo shows us a fresh side of their sound: the main-room hands-in-the-air-going-wild side. To top things off, Italian producer Elisa Bee made time in her busy schedule of DJ’ing and releasing for artists like Ben Sims on his Hardgroove imprint and Unknown to the Unknown to deliver a killer remix of the title track. 

Fouk’s return to Heist after 3 years is a welcome one and with ‘Mirage’, they might just have given us their biggest house track in their decade spanning career. The track is built around a stuttering synth loop and a seductive female vocal chanting ‘What made you wanna…” The real star here is the bassline, which propels the track into a seriously infectious groove. Add some lush strings and moody changeovers and you’ve got yourself a full-blown dancefloor weapon. Mirage has been a staple in Dam Swindle’s sets for the past months and has been one of their set highlights ever since.

“Coffee” is one for the classic Fouk fans. It’s got lovely Rhodes, a joyous combination of whoo’s, snare-rolls and synth hits grooving on top of an infectious orchestral background loop. “Tapioca” is a hybrid latin-electronic groove that builds on punchy synths, live percussion and drunk keys to balance the energy of the track. 

Elisa Bee’s remix of ‘Mirage’ is an intense percussive workout that builds on a breakbeat loop and a rave-bassline. The tempo is turned up a notch or 2 and that stutter synth and vocal of the original make this remix a wild warehouse affair.

Closing track of the EP is ‘Abalone’; A lovely bleep-house affair that still has a bit of that warehouse vibe. It’s got the perfect amount of distortion the drums while keeping things dreamy with some face-melting pads throughout the track.

Makèz return to Heist Recordings with a stellar five-track EP, featuring Life On Planets & AVA LAVÁ. 

Dropping one of the most sought-after IDs of 2023, production duo Makèz made huge waves with their anthemic collab ‘Downstream’ on NO ART alongside Life On Planets, picking up widespread radio support from Pete Tong to Tom Ravenscroft and beyond. Having cut their teeth on Dam Swindle’s Heist label in 2019 as newcomers, the Amsterdam-based pairing come full circle as they bring their classy jazz-tinged sonics to the label once more, bearing all the hallmarks of seasoned pros.

‘Midnight Time’ EP kicks off with ‘Closer’, a sensual jazz-inflected cut carried forward by lush neo-soul vocals from AVA LAVÁ nestled over top of crunchy chords and shuffling percussion. Next up, ‘Running From The Noise’ sees Makèz reunite with Life On Planets for more dancefloor gold, delivering an effortlessly cool track where supple grooves meet blissed-out male vocals. Title cut ‘Midnight Time’ sets its sights on the dancefloor thanks to its killer rolling live bassline, colourful Rhodes chords and dreamy vocals from AVA LAVÁ & Joey Hotwax.

On the flip, ‘The Answer’ takes things into more Chicago-inspired club territories, opting for clean 909 drums and playful acid licks under steamy vox samples before, ‘Gratitude’ goes even deeper, combining haunting strings with dreamy vocal loops as a cybernetic synth line bubbles in the mix.

Premiere: Makèz - The Answer [Heist Recordings]

Year on year Oslo based party starting outfit Det Gode Selskab provide us with a jam packed sampler featuring artists from their collective, family and affiliates of the label, but also welcome a flurry of new artists on board each time. Split into 4 parts spread across the next few months the sampler kicks off with a heavyweight package curated by Jack himself.

Heading up part one is Lazy Pete, label regular Henriku, Rex Ronny, Alm, a return for Philip Hinz, alongside Herman Crantz, and last but not least, Koloniari. The beautiful, deep, house-energy in Lazy Pete's opening track "She's A Replicant (Underground Mix)" sets the stage, before you are hit with the huge drums and peak time action of Henriku's "To The Mountains". Conga time with pulsating bass action. Dreamy synths lead the way in the aptly named "Cheese Police" from Rex Ronny. Hitting the nail on the head is also "Acid House Party '' by Alm, squelchy acid tones breathing life into the housey drum patterns. Let's Jack. Teasing further rave action is Philip Hanz & Herman Crantz with "Stay", a driven outing looking to lift the energy of the floor. Direct house music nostalgia in "Believe In Love", the offering from Koloniari, beautiful keys conversing with the slick motion of the track, classy vocal samples flashing in and out.

This is just the beginning of this enormous sampler, so let's hit the floor and get down to some of Jack's favourites!

It’s been a long time coming but it’s finally happening… Lavan makes his debut on SlothBoogie with a five track EP of superb House rhythms. The Berlin resident opens the release with ‘Tremendous’, filled with US garage referencing chords and a stellar lead organ solo. Up next is the jacking pump of ‘Gwan Nasty’ with its classy chopped vocals, deep house chords and fierce drums.

‘Can’t Tell Me Nothing’ starts off with some familiar drum patterns that quickly get beefed up to underpin the gliding organ chords and synth top lines creating a tough jam for the clubs. ‘Nonchalant’ chops in some classic vocal snippets over softer harmonies backed up by Lavan’s rough and ready drum programming and deep sub notes. ‘Heard You Was A Freak’ rounds the whole EP off with cruising deep chords, dreamy melodies, clever vocal sampling and yet more classic H.O.U.S.E basslines.

This release is definitely one for the real house heads out there.
