Entering the age of shifted summers: it is October, but I'm still wearing my shorts in the evening, when the light is sharp and choking me with melancholy. To catch that feeling, I made this one take, unrehearsed mix, with BPM dropping from 160 to 125. Focus on clever/interesting drum programming, bass to breathe according to (yes:)), but mainly on emotions you just cannot express with words. Or meet me in the ambulance.

The Shifted Summer

Last week, I got obsessed with connecting two certain tracks in a mix, Gigamesh's remix of True Romance and Kahn's remix of Black Christmas by late Poly Styrene, so I had to come up with a bridge over the BPM gap,  from 114 to 140 and put together this, ehm, christmas mix.

True Romance/Black Christmas Mix

This is a DJ set recorded at Fuga, Bratislava, January 15, 2020, as a tribute to a decade just gone

"Uplynulá dekáda bola plná klubovej produkcie, ktorá buď definovala jednu éru, obišla alebo vytvorila vlastné pravidlá, žánre a najmä obstála v skúške časom.

Experimentálny a zároveň funkcionalistický prístup ku všetkému od trance, cez trap až po R&B, resurekcia dubstepu, breaks revival, úplne nové žánre (juke, gqom), post-čokoľvek, staré zvuky v novom šate, nové zvuky v starom šate, štyridsiaty piaty návrat jungle, dekonštrukcie všetkého, až po dekonštrukcie dekonštrukcií a najmä geneticky prospešné kríženie vyššie spomenutého dalo vzniknúť takmer nespočetnému množstvu nových svetov. 

Úzky výber z tohto paralyzujúceho množstva ponúknu štyri domáce mená pohybujúce sa na rozhraní od bass music spektra, cez takzvané hardcore continuum, až po nový globálny sound (existujúci mimo metropoly západného sveta), ktorý sa práve v dekáde 2010 - 2020 konečne dostal k slovu.

M.E.S.H., Andy Stott, Holly Herndon, Laurel Halo, Kamixlo, Pearson Sound, Nkisi, Mumdance, Kassem Mosse sú len špičkou špičky ľadovca - mená, ktoré sa pravidelne objavujú vo  rebríčkoch najlepších releasov dekády, a zároveň sa predstavili vo FUGE počas nášho 9-ročného fu(n)govania. Pod touto špičkou sa skrýva enkláva nemenej zaujímavých zvukov. A potom sú tu samozrejme tí, čo sa vo FUGE asi neukážu (Björk, FKA Twigs, Yung Lean, Arca, Frank Ocean, RIP DJ Rashad). 

Sety sa bude niesť v znamení všetkého od jasne definovaných hráčov až po čoraz zahmlenejšie hranice duality mainstream a underground a jej konečným blahodárnym rozpustením na konci dekády. 

Ciel: prevážiť nostalgický faktor (znovu)objavením (zabudnutých) klenotov."

DJ, organiser, TV and radio host at the BWO collective. Sucked into the harcore continuum in the 90's at the rave and techno phase, he started to play with cassette mixing. 

Stepping out of the turbulences of electronic dance music for some time, he found himself in London back again when the "UK garage-to-dubstep" turn was about to happen, going to the first DMZ parties, documenting them (you can still find his rare photos of Mala or Loefah from that time around the internet) and starting the BWO parties and radio show DvaUnlimited after re-locating to Bratislava. 

His DJ sets are always a great opportunity to check on the state of clued-up urban dance music.
