She has a unique perspective on Twitch streaming, as she has been a streamer the entirety of her DJ career – so that is talked about in the interview below. She has also played places locally like Magic Stick and The Grasshopper Underground.

In her interview, we talk about things like her bunny Jasper and her logo, her college degree choice, what she looks for when she finds new music, an industry panel by Neon Owl she was recently a part of, why she started DJing, her goals for 2021, her most used emoji, and more.

This week’s guest mix is by Rob D’Shawn, a DJ/Producer who will for sure be making a name for himself in the electronic music scene in the years to come.

He has held a weekly and monthly residency at Lo-Fi Bar in Ann Arbor and has played at places like The Grasshopper Underground, Casa on Brady in Milwaukee, Elektricity, and Solar Flux Rooftop.

He has also been a guest on Brent Scudder’s radio show Planet Funk on 313.fm – which is now hosted and broadcasted from Detroit Threads in Hamtramck every Thursday evening from 6pm-9pm EST.

This week's mix feature is the first installment of the new - detroit.dance live worldwide series 🌏 

I decided to call it "worldwide" because it will feature guests from not only outside of Detroit or Michigan, but around the globe ❤ 

The first guest is the amazing ruitokyo - someone I found on a late night Twitch hole a few months ago. He was playing a sunset set on his rooftop in Tokyo while it was like 4am in Michigan, and I couldn't turn off the stream because it was so good - and his community in the chat were so welcoming. He originally comes from Lisbon, Portugal, and his streams are all about the visual experience.

This week’s mix feature is the second instalment of detroit.dance live worldwide – where I feature a guest from outside of Detroit! This week’s guest is mearzie, out of Virginia. She is originally from Chicago which is where I met her in the crowd while seeing Adam Beyer (RIP The Mid).

She picked up DJing a few years ago and when the pandemic hit she focused on it even more – streaming on Twitch monthly/weekly and practicing in her spare time. Her sweet spot is melodic house – and her mix is just that – sweet.

She’s definitely doing the thing, and I’m looking forward to seeing what she accomplishes throughout the rest of 2021!

This week’s guest feature is by none other than Bryan Jones, with his new solo project Wave Point. He’s been in the industry for 20+ years, most recently as 1/2 of the duo Golf Clap. Now, Bryan has hit the ground running with his solo endeavor, providing smooth, groovy tunes all within the house music realm.

His debut album “Higher Dimension” comes out August 13th on his label Even Smoother, and this Friday July 16th his next single “Blurry Lines” is available on all platforms.

This week is a celebration – the one year anniversary of the detroit.dance live mix series. I am so thankful for all of the support from you over the last year! I love finding up and coming artists, and people that you may not know about that you should. It is important to showcase the individuality of each artist as well as showcase their mixes, which is what I aim to do with each interview and feature.

The one year anniversary mix is by The Bernabela Project – a duo consisting of Ramiro & Nicole Bernabela. This is a full circle moment, as I had Ramiro on for the very first mix.

This month’s mix is a detroit.dance live WORLDWIDE mix – featuring Marie Benz. She is originally from Texas, and has lived in places like Ireland, Italy, France, Africa, and is now living a nomadic life in the states… having spent time recently in the Florida Keys, NYC, and Boston.

Her travels influence her sound, but she does not restrict herself to one genre. We met a few years ago at Movement Electronic Music Festival in the crowd at Pyramid Stage, and it has been lovely watching her blossom in the realm of DJing. Her mix is inspired by her time in France and NYC.

This month’s mix features a DJ from Detroit – CoveLove, founder of Love Club. He always finds ways to give back to the community and I’m looking forward to seeing what CoveLove + Love Club continue to do for the city. His mix is 1.5 hours long, featuring tracks from his EP that drops this weekend. It’s got funky disco vibes and a house groove.

This month’s mix feature is Fiyafly, out of Chicago. She and I met at one of my favorite festivals, Even Furthur, in northern Wisconsin. Ever since then, I’ve kept up with what she’s been doing and I am happy to have her as a guest.

This month’s mix feature is WYLDCAT. Bringing something new to your ears with the niche genre of chiptune – he programs music using GameBoys. The mix he created has a techno or house sound, but you can tell that he turns his creative juices up to the max and can be extremely versatile.

detroit.dance live - vol. 038 : WYLDCAT

To kickoff our mix series, we selected Ramiro Bernabela. Ramiro is a Dutch DJ mainstay that has now made his home here in Detroit. Ramiro was born outside of Rotterdam, Netherlands and moved to the city of Groningen when he was 10 years old. He developed a love for music at an early age, playing his first synthesizer at age 12. He bought his first pair of turntables and began DJing at age 18 and played at parties and clubs in Groningen and Amsterdam for many years. He was the Saturday night resident DJ in De Golden Arm, the biggest dance club in the northern Netherlands, for 7 years. He was a regular guest DJ at De Melkweg in Amsterdam, and was a monthly resident DJ at Amsterdam's famous afterparties in Club Zoo in the early 2000s. Since moving to the U.S., Ramiro has made a name for himself in Detroit and had a bi-weekly residency at Grenadier Club, a monthly residency at The Works, and a monthly residency at Marble Bar.

In 1998 he started learning about music production and making special edits to use in his DJ sets. Since then, he has been perfecting his production skills and building up his studio. He uses various drum machines and analog synthesizers in his productions to give them an organic sound. Ramiro has a very individual style of combining many different types of elements together and not following the standard genre rules, giving his productions a unique and interesting sound. He co-owns the record label group AudioBite Records that was started in 2009 together with his wife Nicole. 2015 was a great year production-wise for Ramiro, having 2 original tracks in the Top 100 at both Beatport and Traxsource, "How Low Can You Go" featuring Mr. V, and "Life After House," a collaboration with house legend Roland Clark. Ramiro regularly releases on his own labels and has also had releases on System Recordings, Todd Terry's label Inhouse, Roland Clark's label Delete Records, Spring Tube, and Chuck Love's label Love Network. In 2020, Ramiro has releases coming out on Planet E Communications, AudioBite Records, and he is currently working on his first full-length album.

detroit.dance live - vol. 001 : Ramiro Bernabela

This week’s mix is one made by Brent Scudder, the host of Planet Funk on 313.fm every Wednesday (usually broadcasted at Urban Bean, however that has changed due to COVID-19). He is a dear friend of mine, and loved by many in the electronic music scene here in Detroit. He has been DJing for around seventeen years, and is known for his talent on vinyl, more specifically 45’s. 

The mix he has created for detroit.dance progresses through the genres of 80s/90s, Jackin House, and Baltimore/Bmore House (a fusion of breakbeat and house music). One that will definitely get your feet moving to the funky beats!

I sat down with Brent for an interview, and we talked about things including his role in 313.fm, where he sees his show Planet Funk going after COVID, gig memories, and personal hobbies.

detroit.dance live - vol. 002 : Brent Scudder

This week's mix is a very special one. When Calico unfortunately passed, I wanted to do something to honor his memory the best way I know how - through music. The hour long mix you will listen to is from the Detroit Techno Militia Backstreet at Large live stream takeover on June 27th 2020, where Jon was a guest on the lineup. It will take you on a journey through the beats, a clear reflection of Jon's ability to find those underground tracks and mix them together seamlessly.

Jon's history and background was extensive, and he was widely loved within our Detroit electronic music scene. He brought so many people together through his countless gigs, belief in others to succeed, and contagious smile. Personally, he believed in me as a promoter and knew I was capable of so much more. I will always value the imprint he left on my life, as will many others.

The following bio was written by Angie Linder of Detroit Techno Militia:

Having been surrounded by the standard 4/4 sounds of techno, house and electro in the Detroit electronic scene, influenced by the gritty industrial sounds of groups like Meat Beat Manifesto, Front 242 and Nine Inch Nails, and always searching for something different, led Calico to find the bass heavy abstract sounds of drum & bass and dubstep.

Attending his first underground events in 1996 at Detroit’s famed Packard plant and The Warehouse changed his life forever, and led him into a whole new world. Beginning in 1999, after a few years of attending events and seeing what there was to offer, Calico began helping promote and present events with various crews around the city, helping to bring some of the biggest names in the game. 2004 saw the start of his own mission with The Cat Thieves where he made it a point to focus on events that featured multiple genres, but always pushing heavy bass sounds as well as featuring some of the best from the local scene.

Calico had a passion for exposing people to new music.  He always seemed to stay two steps ahead with new music and new artists he’d want to bring to Detroit.  He was passionate about helping new artists cut their teeth in the scene.  He never stuck to one genre either and worked with just about every crew in the city.  His fire was undeniable.  As a DJ, he was meticulous in his blends, serious behind the decks and relentless in his pursuit to find new music and bone rattling bass.

In his personal life, Calico was a lover and advocate for animals. His dogs were his world.  He had an affinity for pit bulls and cared for several in his lifetime.  He had recently adopted Ripley and took her everywhere with him.  He was a fantastic carpenter with a fine attention for detail when it came to working on a project.  He could build and create anything you would want in your house.  A true woodworking master.  He was very well known for his ability to restore hardwood floors, earning him the nickname "Hardwood Johnny".  He was also called Vern by those who were close to him.  He loved his family and his friends and would do anything for them.  If you needed help, all you had to do was call him.  He touched a lot of lives here on this planet and he loved with the fire of 1000 flames.  We were all so lucky to have him in our lives. 

Rest in Music Jon. You are so missed.

This week’s guest mix is by the one and only QURL (pronounced like “squirrel”). She has burst onto the music scene and has been quickly noticed for her unique mixing style and control of the dance floor. She has played gigs as direct support for Golf Clap recently at Tangent Gallery on their new outdoor patio, with Heddy Frenz at The Grasshopper Underground, and opening up for Noizu at Magic Stick. She was also part of the debut mix series for Korner Kombo Records in July.

I sat down to interview her at a dinner hosted by Paul Roy, part of Heddy Frenz and the culinary genius behind delicious infused meals. Check out his new Instagram for it

This week's guest mix is by DJ Dav, widely known recently for his never-ending Twitch live streams that he started during quarantine (Sundays starting at 2pm EST & Thursdays starting at 7pm EST), and his endless Vans collection. 

He has been DJing for 20+ years, and is also a part of the City Air Detroit crew. Dav recently had his Charivari Detroit music festival debut via their 24/7 live stream event this year, and holds a residency at Rosie O' Grady's in Ferndale.

Listening to a set from Dav, you can expect seamless mixing, music flowing together from every genre, personality, and if he's using them - talent on vinyl. 

This set was recorded at Tangent Gallery on July 11th, 2020 during Tangent's debut of their new outdoor patio (which was also Dav's birthday).

This week's guest mix is by Yosua, pronounced "ya-shu-a". A good friend of mine, a great cook, an avid traveler, boater, and an up and coming Detroit DJ. I am excited for you to hear his mix (some slammin' techno), and learn a little more about Yosua - his name in Hebrew, - Josh. He played at the Leland in Detroit at the event with Lucy (Berlin) last August on a stacked lineup that also included Dru Ruiz, Rex Sepulveda, Errelevent, and OU812.

This week's guest mix is a short and sweet 30-minute mix provided by Ross Regs. He is known for his eclectic style and track selection, always creating a diverse sound, while implementing various sounds/samples and being concise with his mixing and transitions. This style is also translated into the original tracks he produces. Just last week, he played a set at The High Dive in Hamtramck with Jorrisen, part of a Litework Detroit event.

Ross is also known for being 1/2 of the DJ duo Twin Cousin, with Doug Eng. Together, they have played sets all around the city of Detroit, including at the music festivals Movement and Charivari, The Works, Grenadier, Grasshopper Underground, TV Lounge, and more... also having releases on We Jack, HotBoi Records, and Audiophile XXL.

This week’s feature is the lovely RAEDY LEX, also known as Alexa Rae. She is part of the movement here in Metro Detroit called That’s Our Friend, which if you can remember from the last mix, was mentioned by TekNoNo as he is donating all of the proceeds from his first track release this month to their efforts in the community.

She burst onto the scene in 2020, most recently being a part of the Charivari New Year’s Livestream, has been streaming often on Twitch, played at Grasshopper Underground, Tangent Gallery, Magic Stick, and part of various other online streaming events.

She fills the space around her with positivity, her hard work inspires, and she is a multi-talented woman. I am so happy to finally have Alexa on as a guest for the mix series. I hope you enjoy her content this week and learn a bit more about her and what she has been working on.
