Hey folks, I've got a 90 minute tape of Mojo recorded in 1981, includes full intro and everything. I've digitized it - the sound quality is great, and I've love to donate it the Detroit Sound Conservancy. I've got other tapes too, like some WIZARD that is not the same tapes that have been re-upped on the net a thousand times. Get with me, It's a great thing you're doing.

Plenty of talk around Rick Wilhite seems to be how under-rated he is compared to his 3 Chairs peers Theo Parrish, Moodymann and Marcellus Pittman and Detroit compatriots. If he was from any other city in the world, the concept of being under-represented would be ludicrous for a producer of such stature and DJ of such capability, so let’s put aside perceptions and salute The Godson for what he is: a premier selector, curator and maker of music.

Lawrence S. Williams Jr., better known as L.A. Williams, is an American DJ and producer from Chicago. Founder of the label Chisel, producer of over 27 releases, he has an idiosyncratic take to rhythms, sounds and grooves. 

As a huge fan, both impressed and beguiled, I wanted to shine a light on him. I still am often tripped up trying to blend his tracks while D'Jaying and fit them in a mix soooooooo I had to make this all L.A. mix ᏊˊꈊˋᏊ I spent the last few months collecting nearly all his releases on Discogs to use for the mix; a lot isn't available digitally, and it just felt right. 

I think the best way to hear his unique world and sound is via a tour of his various sides and styles, weaving and roiling, building and bubbling, jacking and smacking.

At Field Maneuvers 2023, Optimo (Espacio) played the final set in the Sputnik tent as part of the Watching Trees takeover. "We expected everyone to be on their final reserves of energy," they said. "But it was instantly apparent that there was electric energy in the tent. It ended up being one of the most joyous, life-affirming gigs of [the year]."

This mix on cassette originally is a promo Mega Mix that we sold in high school to promote parties my friends and I did back then (The Witch Is Back). M.O.A. Productions, Frantik Party Productions was some of my earliest House crews, Us (Marky P, DJ Juice, DPC, James. We did underground house parties in basements and around while in high school. This mix, this era '92,  is a mix fusioned of Chicago house, and the European minimal techno that was coming into Chicago then. A timestamp on our histories, early roots and what we love :)

"It was so difficult to become someone." The house hero talks about Chicago's competitive scene, developing a sound and letting go of his ego. 

Theo Parrish is one of dance music's most influential DJs and producers. Raised in Chicago, he's become synonymous with slow-burning, immersive grooves and sets that mix classics with obscurities. He began DJing in 1986 aged 13, eventually earning a degree in sculpture and moving to Detroit, where he hit his stride as an artist and became a member of the collective Three Chairs alongside Moodymann, Rick Wilhite and Marcellus Pittman. He also started the label Sound Signature, which uses the language of soul, jazz, disco, Chicago house and Detroit techno.

A few months ago, Resident Advisor teamed up with London institution fabric to host Parrish for an eight-hour set—his first time playing the club. While he was in town, he also spoke with CDR's Tony Nwachukwu. In the Exchange, Parrish talks about the intensely competitive scene he grew up in. He DJ'd for 13 years before he was ever paid or had his name billed on a lineup. It took years of passion and hard work to break out of his local scene and build the career he's become known for. 

"At five years, you're dealing with the technical part [of DJing], at ten it's finding your sound and at 15 it's dealing with the ego of it all," he says. "It's not until much later that you actually start to play for and with people."

Parrish also reflects on the ongoing dearth of diversity in the dance music industry and posits whether some of the most popular music in the US—such as trap—reinforces counterproductive racial stereotypes.
