Lektern Mixtape 2013 Pt.3

The MULTI CULTI adventure begins with a bold debut 12" from DREEMS, three dubbed-out visions from the depths of Australia's vibe country, featuring a collaboration with mystery mate JAGMA.. In the Desert serves as an excellent introduction to the label's ethos, chakra-picking musical fruit from around the world, sharing only the top 0.01% of all vibes travelled. 

In advance of a full length LP release, these tracks are DJ-friendly, though the exotic vocal samples and timeless Afro-Tribal-World-Rave sounds aren't meant for killing dance floors, but breathing new life into them. 'We Shall Be Found' trots out of the gates with I-rey enthusiasm, a gospel Rasta refrain soaring atop rolling synths and funky 808 rhythms. 'In the Desert' is a sun-drenched epic that evidently drew inspiration from five full trips to Burning Man, the sonic proof of beautiful sun-dances, trained to a timeless walk-about groove. Finally, 'With Shackles On' is a blissfully lucid chain-gang journey to the shimmering edges of your consciousness.

Dust off your psychic bongo, re-hang that dream catcher, light up your essential oil burners, set your alarm clock to snooze, put on your headphones and re-tune your consciousness to a bright and beautiful whole.

Lektern Mixtape 2014 Pt.1

Ibiza-based label MATE LTD returns with a third EP signed by resident of the island Jyoel. For the occasion, he’s joined by talented artists on the remix duty. Added to the record: two duos, four artists, eight hands. The duo JNJS aka Jacobo Saavedra & Jay Nortown are giving their own interpretation of the original track ‘Dreams’, featured on the A side, and the Romanian duo NFTO take the lead of the B side with their remix of ‘The Power That You Are Not Using’.

The first track of the EP, original track 'Dreams', is a groovy minimal piece, between breaks and acid influences. As airy tones subtly slip in between the light house beats, a smooth voice starts to whisper in our ears to the rhythm of the bass. Multi Culti are proud to present the debut EP from Sao Paolo's Voodoohop resident, Thomash.

DJ Thomash has set up one of the most influential nights in the bazooming Brazilian scene with his Voodoohop party, a fusion of tropical hedonism and avant-garde trance-inducing European electronic music, a lively mix that no doubt has its genesis in his transplanted German roots (he's from Cologne aka Kompakt-ville). He's shared the stage with guys like Rebolledo, Joakim, Acid Pauli and more, and now finally looks to colonize the world with his first release.

Interestingly, Thomash has a degree in artificial intelligence, so while it might just be our imagination, it does seem that the rhythms, full of oddly tuned percussion and colorful synth stabs seem imbued with a distinct internal logic, playful forms that bounce off each other in their own reality, according to their own laws. This narrative of the ethnoid, German-Brazilian AI ties in nicely with the title: Candomble is the name of an Afro-Brazilian religion, meaning literally 'dance in honour of the gods.' Fortunately for us, Thomash seems to be honouring some scarcely acknowledged, far-out deities... spritely DMT-elves. Ectoplasma further plays into this reading, both in title and in vibe, floating unconcerned with material dancefloor goals into a space of peaceful imagination and spirit. Finally, Calango Fumando Palha is a soft, dreamy morning peyote-fire anthem… a healing latin lullaby to soothe troubles and set positive vibes free.

Called in to take us deeper into the trip are Multi Culti's go-to sooth-sayers DREEMS, who lead us forwards in full-chakra-alignment with the originals, bringing bigger bass into the heart of the jungle, tripping on acid, leaving us loose-limbed, wide-eyed, and open-minded in bliss as the final chords tuck us in and kiss us goodnight. On ‘Still Burning’ Maroki spreads his wings as a producer by bringing fast-rising singer Maeve into the mix for an introspective club cut holding crossover potential closer to its chest. The plaintive synth lines and brooding bass provide a powerful backdrop to Maeve’s eyes-down vocal on the verses, but Maroki holds back some crafty voice edits for those peaks when the crooked beat kicks in.

Amongst the deeper contemplation of his Through The Tooth EP, Maroki indulges his club instinct more wholly on swirling house odyssey ‘Oceans’. Pairing diva licks with spiritual guidance and nagging monosynth hooks with spiralling, trance-tinted leads, Maroki plays to his strengths and delivers us his take on modern prog house with teeth.

Since bursting onto the scene three years ago Maroki has shaped out an emotionally-charged sound that comfortably wraps around any number of club styles. Even by his swooning, introspective standards, his new release on Ano Ano takes this idea further with guest vocalist Maeve rounding out some of his most poignant productions to date. 

2021 was a tricky time to gain a foothold in club music, but Maroki’s music transcended the limitations of dance music without dancefloors thanks to his melodic strong suit, drawn from a background in classical piano and soundtrack composition. A run of acclaimed releases on labels like E-Beamz, Lost Palms and Flippen Bits cemented his arrival as he elegantly moved between light-footed breakbeat, dexterous 2-step and artfully swung house.

Through The Tooth follows a logical path from his previous appearance on Ano Ano - the 2023 EP Plastic Brain, thanks to Maroki’s innate instinct for the low-end sound craft of UK sound system music and the harmonic sensibility he applies to every aspect of his sound. If these six new tracks feel more inwardly focused than, say, his drop on Lobster Theremin, it’s because they were made through the surreal isolation of lockdown.

The presence of rising icon Maeve [3] on ‘Still Burning’ and ‘Bad Day In Bonus Town’ celebrates the sense of liberation that came as outside life resumed — the pair connected in the wake of Glastonbury Festival to create the final pieces of the puzzle that make up this

EP. ‘Dreamer’ features additional production from Hypnøs, a close friend whose studio sits across the canal from Maroki’s in Amsterdam, and you can expect to hear more from their partnership in the coming months.

A special mention goes to the artwork for Through The Tooth, which comes from James Lacey at Pointless Illustration. A longtime friend of Maroki’s, Lacey renders the sound of the EP in dusky tones and geometric formations that call back to the bold vision of the Italian futurists — a fitting mood for the balance of retro and modernist touches contained in the music.

Exploring a more universal approach that reaches beyond the pure functionality of music for the club, Maroki taps into the idea we don’t just need beats for late nights in dark rooms. These are songs to carry with you through life, with an emotional resonance which lingers long after the final delay trails have run their course on EP closer ‘Offworld Paddy’.

Rounding out his most reflective EP to date, ‘Offworld Paddy’ sees Maroki cast adrift in a cascade of celestial synth blooms and a delicate 2-step groove. It’s the perfect recipe for an interstellar exploration, as contrasting tones and textures rise and fall around the space age siren song lingering somewhere in the middle distance. Not so much of a soft landing as a gentle push into zero gravity.

Premiere: Maroki, Hypnøs - Dreamer - Ano Ano

On ‘Dreamer’ Maroki teams up with his studio neighbour across the water, Hypnøs. As canal-side neighbours in Amsterdam, the pair have nurtured a kindred spirit of melodious rave music which celebrates all the best parts of the past 30 years of dance music. Those influences come through in abundance here, from throbbing 303s to the urgent techno propulsion of the drums, all cast in the moody melancholy of the pads which give the track its entrancing vibe.
