As a true believer in the power of hardware samplers and analogue synthesizers, Italo Brutalo created his own universe of soundscapes and styles of music. Due to lots of releases on labels like Mozzarella Rec, Days of Being Wild, Compuphonic, RFR Records or International Deejay Gigolo Records, he made himself a very good name amongst artists from all different genres and decades. His records are supported by credible and popular acts as well.

Not just his outstanding DJ mixing skills but also his spectacular live acts opened the door for many bookings all over the world in countries like Spain, France, Mexico, Finland, Italy, Lithuania, Hungary, Austria, etc. to name just a few.

We continue with this format of mixes with a new Interview of one of our favorites labels from Seattle, USA. @medical-records-llc a.k.a Dr Troy. 

1-Medical Records in one word? 

Exploratory

2-How was it creating a new label?

 It was very challenging for a few years before I ever was able to release my first two titles. I had endless unanswered emails and messages from artists. I was lucky to have advice from other labels in the beginning which was valuable to me but a lot is just taking chances and learning from mistakes along the way!

3-How was working with Geneva Jacuzzi? 

It was real honor to work with such an interesting and diverse artist. Her mastery of sounds, imagery, performance artist are all unparalleled. I appreciated her willingness to work with Medical and her “all in” philosophy and collaboration working with a label. We have both had a lot of success and fun along the way.

Favorite track from Luminance?

 Definitely “Essentialize”. I’ve been jamming it out during my dj sets long before the release was out there. It was luckily very popular on the dance floor. A very nice blending of styles with it’s own unique aesthetic.

What do you think about Italo disco? 

Oh man… I first starting hearing it in the very early 2000s. I instantly fell in love! I was already a synth pop/wave fanatic person. Hearing the robotic edge to disco with the cheesy yet heartfelt romanticism won me over instantly. I used to be pickier about the tracks but find myself almost loving it all these days.

Some Electronic obscure label to search?

 Oh there are many good ones. Most aren’t too obscure anymore to be honest. I am pretty into all the Dutch labels for some time now which are all gaining momentum like Rotterdam Electronix. Rat Life out of Berlin is amazing too (Credit 00’s label). Anything Credit 00 releases is gold right now IMO.

How many vinyls you have in your collection?
 Well I have 3600 logged in discogs but I’m guessing maybe another 1000 not logged? I’m not 100% sure. Too many…

McDonalds or Burger King?

 McToxins for life J

Ebm or New Beat?

 Ebm for old times sake, but I’ve been getting into more New Beat over the years. I heard a lot of it a bit later tbh and heard EBM/industrial may years before so I’m biased.

Most wanted record?

 I have been wanting a copy of Ecstacy Of St. Theresa “Sussurate” for years now with no luck. Still looking! It’s like $200 bucks now sadly. Mind blowing early shoegaze classic from Czech.

Best remind from 80s?

 I love New Romantic. I love the imagery, makeup, hair and colors. Such amazing videos and synth textures. I also love early Skinny Puppy and industrial from that time as well as all the obvious amazing synth and cold wave.

New favorite track? 

I’ve been stuck on this one: Danny Daze “Late Night Snack” (Moustache Records). So intense and motivating!

The worst and the best of the musical industry?
 
The best is the love for the music and spreading the gospel and helping artist obtain a larger artist for their well deserved crafted art. The worst is all the greed of the past and all the resentment (most deserved) by artists. They have a right to distrust labels as so many took advantage of artist in the past. This resonates into the present and the future and it is a challenge to reassure artists this is all a labor of love. Nobody is getting rich anytime soon in the DIY music scene sadly… Especially with the seemingly collapse of physical media and the pool being so saturated these days. I’m not quitting any time soon though.

What do you like expressing playing this mix? 

I wanted to really give a good representation for my style and vision of what I’m trying to relay with my djing these days. I love taking a “genre theme” and completely intertwining it with the music of my childhood and past that doesn’t even necessarily match but still gives off the similar vibe. That my was my intention at least.

IM MIX #30 : Medical Records + Interview

An ode to dancefloor escapism. Alinka once again navigates her way around making house music weird, catchy and jumpy for the first release on her new label Fantasy Life.

A Ukraine born, American raised and Berlin based artist and DJ, Alinka has tipped around the most interesting cores of sound creation over her career. Absorbing the many influences of her musical passions, she has created her own version of emotional catharsis, revealed and reborn on the dancefloor. From censorship to flourish, Chicago born house and sparks of Detroit techno; the omnipresent struggle of finding ways to consume and create dance music has made her thrive in creating tracks from a broad palette of sources.

Do What U Want is a five-track long love-letter to dance music and unity to open her new label. Working with classic sounds, Alinka keeps it fresh and interesting, with addictive vocal and squelchy acid stabs. Reshaping house music patterns, collaging 4x4 beats with more complex layers of sound that don’t just fall in a box that’s labelled ''100% classic house''. The intention was to make strong, powerful and timeless music designed to evoke pure joy.

Fantasy Life is inspired by Andy Warhol's piece ''Fantasy love is better than reality love''. The concept was driven by the honesty and emotions that it accompanies. It couldn't have been a better time for the thought process to materialize into this project. Alinka explains - ''A dancefloor can essentially be an escape from reality. Music can take us to another place and serve as a safe space and an escape from our everyday lives and problems. On a perfect day, you see people of all walks of life dancing in unity and it feels like a fantasy. ''
