Our theme tune? You could say that… It began life as a poem by the Hexham-born Georgian poet WW Gibson (1878-1962), referring to the Devil’s Water stream that runs through Hexhamshire and meets the Tyne at Dilston. Richard (who was born at Dilston Hall, near the confluence of the two rivers) adapted it and gave it a tune. We first encountered the poem via The Brothers Gillespie, who made their own tune for it.

Versions of this ballad were common in the Border country. Robert Burns contributed a version to Scot’s Musical Museum that matches this one quite closely, but locates Hughie’s downfall in Stirling rather than Carlisle. The tune is based upon the American fiddle tune The Falls Of Richmond. June Tabor and Mark Emerson first married it to the ballad; we’ve simplified it slightly.

The story is true. ‘Dan’ was a real character actually called ‘Kit’ who lived in the house over the hedge at the top of my garden. I nearly called the song ‘Old Man Kit’. “Old Man Kit Was A Mean Old ----“. I had number of suggestions for rhymes with ‘Kit’ hence the fictional ‘Dan’.

Devils Water is a small, picturesque river winding through Hexhamshire in Northumberland and joining the River Tyne at Corbridge. That's where we got our name. So you could call us a sort of tributary band, perhaps... The core line-up is Richard Ridley (voice, guitar, guzuki and other stringed devices) and Raymond Greenoaken (voice, banjo, concertina, guitar, harmonium, percussion), and Patrick Walker (violin, viola, mandolin, guitar, electric guitar, voice), supplemented on occasion by trusted and gifted musicians of our acquaintance who don't mind not getting paid.
