Brashear High School in Pittsburgh serves about 1,300 students, 22% of whom are immigrants or former refugees who are learning to speak English. For a different perspective on U.S. immigration policies and realities, Youth Express spoke with ten students from Syria, Iraq and Yemen -- with a translator, when needed -- to provide perspective and insight into what it's like to be an Arabic-speaking teen in high school.

This is another song in my "Kitchen Recordings" series where I present some of my songs in their most basic forms, recorded live with only one microphone with only vocal and acoustic guitar - in my kitchen (of course...).

This is a song I wrote, in 2017, to my demented mother. She has suffered from dementia since age 60 and hasn't said my name since 2013. She is still alive, but she has no idea who I am. I think it is tragic to "lose" someone in this way, and it sometimes feels that I have already lost her, thus the title of the song.

Note: My mother died on February 21, 2019, age 73

Devil’s Holler is the latest project from multi-instrumentalist Rob Gray. Rob released his first album “Songs for the Half Awake” as several conclusions in 2008. Labeled by Margaret Welsh of the Pittsburgh City Paper as “an appropriate soundtrack for sufferers of seasonal-affective disorder.” , Rob put out two more albums under this moniker “How we pass” (2010) and “Croatoa” (2012) each crafting an evolution of spooky americana. Songs of death, love, whiskey and loss stretch over each album. Rob has shared the stage with a long list of local and national artists such as Slim Forsythe and his New Payday Loaners, Jim Avett, The Roe Family Singers, The Beagle Brothers, The Harlan Twins, Faithful Sinners, Buddy Nutt and many more.
You can find Rob hootin and a hollering in the backwoods of Butler, around campfires with The Wayward Strangers or pickin on his porch. Echoing from his Dormont studio sounds of musical saw, accordion, banjo fill the air. The ghosts of mentors like Townes Van Zandt, Blaze Foley and Jolie Holland are entwined in every strum and verse. Devil’s Holler is both the hell and the highway and will surely leave you stomping along.
