Everything about this album is a MASTERPIECE....from the abstract cover art, to the jazz-infused production emphasizing the LOW END, to the rhymes traded effortlessly between Q-Tip and Phife (R.I.P.).  Genius-level artistry.
This album represented a defining moment in hip hop, so I HAD to pay tribute with a mix incorporating the original samples, remixes, and blends.

It's the end of the Winter Bluntz Trilogy, Hoth style, takin' out AT-AT's. The victory lap on a Taun Taun, passin' you sucker ducks on land speeders… I just finished doing this mix, and I feel like I just entered the DMC for two hours straight, my brain is spent and I'm ready for that blunt.

Here's what I remember playing:

Drum breaks off live 1970's concert cassettes, kids TV show stuff, libraries, a lot of Australian, Japanese, African, Czech, Polish, Thai, Chinese, Russian, Greek, French, WORLD stuff, a touch of latin, some stems, edits, a few raer acapellas, a live crooklyn dodgers j-pop blend, jazz, hip-hop jawns, soundtracks, b-boy breaks, some 45s, private press stuff, some 90's wall of fame classics, soul, disco, reggae, console music, blaxploitation radio advertisements, drum breaks of all-sorts, and it goes on and on…

Winter Bluntz #3

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This sixth bonus mix focuses on another sub-genre popularised in the 90s which is not entirely easy to define. Loops of popular Hip Hop records arranged into club-friendly instrumentals, in their day these tracks were mostly referred to simply as ‘Breakbeats'. They were Club records first and foremost so ‘Hip Hop Club Breaks’ is maybe a more accurate description. Armand Van Helden’s ‘AV8’ is the label most commonly associated with the sound, although Nervous Records & its ‘Strapped’ sub label were perhaps equally active. A few other smaller labels like Slammin’ and Kingsize also played their part. A lot of DJs principally associated with House music or who produced both House and Hip Hop were responsible for many of these records, often under aliases – Armand Van Helden of course, but also Todd Terry, Kenny Dope, DJ Spinna and others. Many other names in the scene were known for making this style of Hip Hop almost exclusively – Crooklyn Clan, Davey Dex, Bobby J to name a few. Artwork here pays tribute to Armand Van Helden's AV8 Records.

David Joseph’s ‘You Can’t Hide (Your Love From Me)' is a track I’ll forever have a strong personal association with, given that it was with 2 copies of this 12" that I made my claim to fame as the 1st UK DJ to mix live on TV – on February 25th 1983 at Newcastle’s Tyne Tees TV studio, on the classic British music show, ‘The Tube’. Last April I was sent a link to an edit by Italian DJ Moplen™ and was, as you can imagine, intrigued when I saw what it was - David Joseph – ‘You Can't Hide (Your DUB From Me)’. Utilizing the Larry Levan mix (I’d used original UK twelves on The Tube, the Levan mix wouldn’t come until later, when the track went big in the NYC clubs), Moplen had done a fine job, but unfortunately I couldn’t play it. 

I replied to his mail, explaining that because of my connection to the track I would need the vocal in there at some point, otherwise the dancefloor might feel short changed. The whole dub vibe teases things up a treat, but the money shot of the song is a must for my own purposes. Moplen was getting a great reaction to the edit as it was, and rightly so – check it out here:

So, for my own personal use, I edited Moplen’s edit to incorporate the full vocal, and the resulting version became one of my big festival tracks of 2011, and something that’s appeared in a number of my live mixes.

This track has come a long way with me since I was first sent a UK promo by Island Records 29 years ago.

The homie jrocc passed thru as well as we were recording the rehersal set mind u this is not the full set this is just the part of the set i Needed to practice i overdubbed drops on certain songs on this mix so ppl wont sample stuff off my mix in other words find the record yourself.
