Of the many powerful public readings Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Galway Kinnell gave during his lifetime, few drew from his fractured, hallucinatory 1971 masterpiece The Book Of Nightmares. The visionary book-length meditation is as difficult as it is transformative.

“I’ve tried to carry my poetry as far as I could,” Kinnell once told the Los Angeles Times, “to dwell on the ugly as fully, as far, and as long, as I could stomach it.”

Critic Morris Dickstein once called Kinnell “one of the true master poets of his generation. There are few others ... in whose work we feel so strongly the full human presence.”

That presence endures. A new recording by Denver artist Devin James Fry voices The Book Of Nightmares' harrowing and hallowed inward journey.
