Based out of Portland, Oregan, the producer and multi-instrumentalist Devin Kroes has spent the last six years and counting tapping into a variety of psybient styles across a choice collection of tracks. Ahead of his Breathe EP release through the Danktronics platform, the Rust was given the opportunity to premiere the effusive track “Bloom”, featuring the soul-drenched sax lines of ST4RFOX.

Wielding a pristine level of clarity and tonal balance, Kroes dances between lush vocal samples and vibrant layers of synthesis. Each passing phrase paints the next hue across the landscape of the song, building on additive arrangements and fleshing out the literal breath of the track. At high point of the musical narrative, ST4RFOX breaks into a spirited saxophone run that ties off “Bloom” with a proper resolution, leaving the track to fade out between ripples of waning chords. For fans of full-spectrum sound design and organic compositions, make sure you grab the full copy of Devin Kroes' Breathe EP when it drops on April 23 on all available platforms.

When we last crossed paths, the stoic producer and multi-instrumentalist Devin Kroes was on the heels of his Breathe EP, a cinematic and energetic three-track collection. Two years later, and he’s put the finishing touches on the fruit of an altogether more intensive labor; with The Rust Music serving as home base for his latest release, he’s pulling back the curtain on his arduous and expansive ten-track LP, There Is Growth Here.

Brimming with attitude and sharp tonality, There Is Growth Here maneuvers from end to end with clear compositional intention; each track is the launchpad for the subsequent song, easily blending the berth of styles housed under one umbrella. With psychedelia and psybient fundamentals abound, this latest spate of tracks showcase rhythms ranging from scintillating and groovy downtempo through to elevated drum and bass, all the while showing off Kroes’ penchant and skill with latin riffs and six-string leads, tying the knot on a marked infusion of world-music into his established palette. With style, finesse, and clear compositional confidence, Taking its spot as the 78th Rust Music release, Kroes' There Is Growth Here LP hits every mark and then some, and we’re exceptionally excited to offer the record in both digital and vinyl formats.
