'Lock In' kicks off with serious intent: a sharp, clipped riff and trembling, emotive pads set the dramatic scene before we're hurled into a thick bass fray. The low end roars and stretches as DC Breaks trademark drum science surges through the mix. And with additional breakbeats peppering the fills with chop-slapping cymbal splashes and chest-pressing double-kicks, an intense dynamic is maintained throughout. Handle with care... This one's dangerous.

'Shakedown' upholds the Bristol/London duo's menacing message as we're instantly sucker-punched with nagging middy notes, subtle bass tears and a pensive build-up. Before we know it, we're surrounded in a swarm of basses, each one soaring and sneering, buzzing and biting, vying for our full focus. As a cool tape-stop effect to introduce us to the breakdown, the rebuild and second drop live up to the track title in every way: this is guaranteed to shake your dancefloor so hard it's pretty much criminal.

To say that Document One “defy categorisation” wouldn't quite get across the whole truth. For one thing, it's a cliché, and to use a cliché to describe their brand of gritty, smoky, jazz-inspired, funk-infused dancefloor D&B just wouldn't be right. After all, they steer well away from cliché in their music, what with their expert melding of the light and the dark, the natural and the synthetic, the laid-back and the crowd-hyping. They've created their own category, and the two tracks on this release are here to stretch the limits of it a couple of notches further. “Chasing Stars” is the sound of effortlessness. 

Two different flavours of drum, the techy kick and snare plus the loose cymbals and fills, roll alongside each other in the intro. Meanwhile noodling keys and the eponymous vocal riff create a gentle head-nodding vibe. Then, without breaking a sweat, Document One call this casual jam-session to order, with a grimy bassline that weaves the whole track into a tightly-knit roller. This is dangerous rave material that you don't see coming. 

Then “Get Da Funk” goes one step more groovy. Yeah, groovy. That's the word for it. Horns and acoustic drums lay down the vibe, then a Motown-style vocal soars over the top to build things up. Then the drop gives us quintessential Document One, as bass and iron fist drums create a rhythmic combination with vocal and horn stabs that is absolutely irresistible. An ice-cool breakdown with added blues guitar gives the opportunity for even more hype in the second drop. 

These tracks could easily be onstage recordings from some ultra-slick band. The deftly expert programming doesn't detract from the feeling of live energy that Document One manage to get in their music. Like the best jazz or funk acts, it's the sound of accomplished technicians letting loose and having some fun. And while they're having fun, the ravers are too. This is D&B as only Document One do it.

Upgrade, well known for his skills creating huge dancefloor bashers returns to the Serial Killaz label to unleash his brand new EP ‘Temper Tantrum’. He’s obviously been taking his recent automobile frustrations out on the mixing desk as this collection of tracks bangs harder than a head on collision on the M1.

The title track ‘Temper Tantrum’ provides the perfect introduction to the forthcoming mayhem with an infectious synth hook which is swiftly mimicked by a roughly layered bassline and Wild West vocal stabs.

‘It’s Possible’ keeps the pace rolling with the promise of virtual bombs exploding across the rave. It’s another heavily riff driven track that’s screaming anthem and will no doubt have had ravers humming that gritty patten way after the 6am cutoff.

Next up on the agenda is ‘Terrorick’. Guided by a ton of excellent vocal samples, it’s the perfect quick turnaround that any DJ looking for snappy devastation will need. With no let off from the word go, it’s another addictive track that will leave you within an inch of exhaustion, no matter what your dancing style.

Toning down the initial pace, ‘Blow’ provides images of a more glamorous setting but this is obviously a false pretence as it’s quick to change into a throbbing monster of a track. The trick here is the switch at 1:30 which takes the pace to another level. A perfect way to change the style and direction of a tune and it works so well. Forget your key changes, this is where it’s at!

Finishing off this immense EP is ‘Run This Again’. The sublow guiding element to the intro will have any die hard ravers in pieces even before the ever so popular drop, and what a drop it is! Layers upon layers of drums, bass switches, more bass switches and everything in between make this final track an absolute killer from Manila.

This EP from Upgrade really does show why he’s a notch above most in the drum and bass scene. If you sleep on this, you really are missing out and with DJ support from the likes of Andy C and Skrillex to name a few, it’s time to unleash your temper..
