It's impossible to talk about the sound of DjRUM without using the word cinematic. Whatever he does, it has a feeling of grand importance, widescreen elegance and moving emotion that elevates it way above a dance floor soundtrack. Throughout the course of his career, the UK artist has drawn on downtempo, blurred the lines between drum & bass and dubstep and always imbued his music with spoken words snippets, piano and chamber instruments. His Portrait With Firewood album was a real high-water mark in 2018, and last year his latest outing on R&S once again managed to draw on every aspect of electronic music and come up with something all his own. 

His mix for us this week is a perfect ethereal rave that finds plenty of beauty in the sparse rhythms he draws on from the worlds of garage, techno and drum & bass. There is a delicacy and elegance throughout, even when the beats hit hard and fast as they do at the overdriven and manic mid point. The amen breaks come thick and fast after that, but eventually melt away to propulsive ambient soundscapes that suspend you in time and space. Blissful.

In a new edition of the Area Remote digital EP series, we welcome the trio De La Maso, Dexxis and Marco Zorano. De La Maso has been DJ-ing in Southern Germany for years, always able to draw people to the dance floor with his energetic sound packed neatly in hot sets. His friend Dexxis also has extensive experience playing the decks at the hottest clubs in the Lake Constance region in Germany, with a passion for electronic dance music from house to tech-house to techno. The trio is completed with DJ Marco Zorano, whose sets with drum based, deep sounding and rhythmically propulsive beats have made many hearts beat faster. These three friends have been producing music together for three years now, creating tracks with deep, bongo-sensitive en wreaking grooves. Thats a sound we quite like on Area Remote, so we are pumped theyve produced this Child EP for us. FUNKY CHILD: The deep and dubby beat and wavey, rolling tech house flow of this track will fast-forward you to dance paradise. Theres nothing childish about it, its that funkalicious. ROMP CHILD: With an alternating bassline, some sweet drums and lovely lingering percussions, youre pumped up for some crazy dance floor shenanigans. Live. Laugh. Dance. Be a romp child. I’ve been waiting to write a full blog post before I put up this mix from what is going to be my last festival appearance for some time, but its been difficult, given the circumstances we all find ourselves in, to fully engage, and although I’ve made a start there’s still more I’d like to say, so the post will have to wait a bit longer.

Its Easter weekend, so I think its about time I shared the mix – it was recorded on March 8th at the WOMADelaide festival, the centrepiece of my recent Australian tour, and was pretty much a perfect gig for me – environment, crowd, sound/set-up – featuring a jamboree of some old favourites alongside more recent releases / re-edits. There’s a strong Aussie representation, with tracks by Tame Impala, Confidence Man and Owl Eyes - a great new remix of ‘You And I’ by Late Nite Tuff Guy who also provides, along with Dr Packer, a number of reworks.

This was only a month ago, but how times have changed. Hope you’re keeping safe and coping during lockdown.
