De Zee Podcast #30 - Märis

In the new episode of our podcast, we present Märis (@djjoeylou). She is a German-American performance artist, musician and producer based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Her musical persona is driven by a diverse combination of writing and producing songs shaped by the soul, RnB and indie scene and standing in front of the decks at night letting out the techno, synth-wave and break-beat inspired side in her.
"Art doesn’t need a category or genre to work its magic. Art needs a statement and an emotion" – is the core guideline for anything Marie-Lou presents as an artist to people. Besides playing behind the decks Marie-Lou also takes a more activistic role as co-founder of Zena Kollektiv (@zenakollektiv) - a Heidelberg, Germany based feminist DJ collective supporting FLINTA* artists in the electronic music and club culture.

On her mix, she said she wanted to take a story-telling and conceptual approach with a clear beginning and end. She mixed acoustic instruments with electronic beats that show different sides of the same track elements throughout the set.

La Mer is a producer, cellist, DJ and composer previously based in Tel Aviv and currently based in The Hague, The Netherlands. She has a classical background as a cellist, playing with orchestras and improvisation ensembles, as well as extensive work in music production and electronic composition for media. She combines her classical roots with her passion for electronic music and creates her own unique sound. She cherishes the idea that genre isn’t the important part of the music, but the flow and progress. Her productions and mixes lay on the verge between ethereal synth sounds, deep strings and different rhythmic approaches. She is the host of ‘Kaparaad’ on Komrad.net.

"I usually think way too much before recording a radio show or a mix for a podcast, about the environment I want to create. This time I only had one thing in mind - what would be great to play at a queer party but also to listen to alone at home? As I have experienced both, it came quite naturally, so I wish you all a wonderful dancing time with this bouncy colourful mix."
