Before DFA was really a thing, James asked Marcus Shit Robot to record some of his favorite techno tracks for Juan MacLean, who was still finding his way out of the nineties indie morass. In lieu of a compilation or traditional mix tape, Marcus woke up one morning, turned on the MiniDisc (!) recorder, and just started mixing records in his Ludlow St. living room. What was meant to be a casual and ruff mix for friends of course became a formative early DFA text for those that had it.

“Cold Skool 4 Juan” was burned to two CD-Rs from the original MiniDisc. Juan’s was lost some time later, but we managed to find the other hiding in plain sight in a Case Logic booklet amongst a bunch of other important things. (It was a time.)

At Field Maneuvers 2023, Optimo (Espacio) played the final set in the Sputnik tent as part of the Watching Trees takeover. "We expected everyone to be on their final reserves of energy," they said. "But it was instantly apparent that there was electric energy in the tent. It ended up being one of the most joyous, life-affirming gigs of [the year]."

Excited to share the recording of a 3hr set live from Waking Life festival in Portugal from earlier this summer. This set is one of my favorites of the year, full of ‘Mister’ anthems for a fresh audience and 2024 favorites that have been working a treat on home soil at Nowadays

Truth be told I hadn’t heard too much about the festival before receiving the invite to come play and so travelled to Portugal with an open mind and a managed expectation. What I experienced was one of the most fulfilling festival experiences I’ve ever had as a DJ or punter. There was joy, freedom, mischief and a sense of acceptance in the air which I quickly felt and rode as best I could for the next 3 hours. 

Major props to the folks working hard to produce and preserve a truly special vibe in a truly magical location.

The beloved German producer talks about finding inner peace, overstimulation and his new album on Pampa Records.

Mental health is a topic that comes up frequently in the music industry, but it's still not discussed enough among electronic music's top performers. In this RA Exchange, Stefan Kozalla—better known as DJ Koze—opens up about his battle with anxiety, self-doubt and rising expectations that come with being a long-standing, high-profile name. He talks about overstimulation, music as rest and the compromises artists need to make to have relevance and staying power.

Kozalla, a beloved and eccentric German artist who has developed a cult following over the course of his career, has productions on esteemed labels like XL, Kompakt, Cocoon, Warp, Ninja Tune and BPitch, which garner praise as soon as they're released. "Every time DJ Koze comes out of the woodwork to drop a 12-inch—or even just a remix—we usually end up hearing it everywhere for months on end," wrote former RA editor Andrew Ryce.

Kozalla talks to RA contributor (and former editor) Matt Unicomb about his production process and early influences—an uncanny combination of Basic Channel and Public Enemy—as well as his forthcoming album, Music Can Hear Us, coming out on Pampa Records on April 4th. Jeddah-born, Dublin-raised DJ @movingstill seamlessly melds his dual heritage in an hour-long mix, spanning childhood favourites to surefire club weapons.

"I really wanted this mix to represent as much of my musical world as possible, it's a journey through the different sounds I love and play. I think for a while, there was an assumption about what I play in my sets, but the truth is, my sets change all the time. Every party has its own energy, its own crowd, and there’s just so much music out there that deserves to be heard. This mix was my way of showing that range, from emotional and unexpected moments to heavier club gear."
