With this record Innervisions brings you 2 remixes from the award winning Sudanese musician Emmanuel Jal. The remixes were done by Henrik Schwarz and Olof Dreijer (The Knife). They were originally compiled for the Sudan Votes Music Hopes campaign by MICT and now remixed for the Sudan Votes Music Hopes Remixed & Sudan365 project. With the campaign, several organizations across the globe came together to promote international awareness for the referendum in January 2011.

Marcin Czubala’s track titles are starting to closely mirror his career path. Like a swift gazelle Czubala bounces back and forth between mobilee records and Nick Curly´s 8bit recordings, leaving in his wake a trail of triumphant releases. ‘Zoo Communale’springs Czubala back to mobilee after the success of his ‘Minskaya’ EP on 8bit, and jumping in the cage with him is none other than well renowned artist Hugo.
 
An impressive discography and busy touring schedule have made Hugo a reputable name in clubs around the globe. As a fan of his jazz educated, funk inspired sound Czubala approached Hugo to collaborate. The subsequent intertwining of these two musical animals produced ‘Zoo Communale’, its bouncy grooves and hypnotic loops tinged with a bit of funk. Animalistic stuff.  
 
‘Zoo Communale’ is comprised of two tracks, A-side ‘Zoo Communale’ and B-side ‘No Tu No’, as well as a digital bonus track ‘Polita.’Every track has its own unique twist, each proving perfect for dance floors world wide. Mobilee says welcome to the zoo, and enjoy!

“No Cigar” is a track that didn’t make it onto 2023’s 5 Songs, which was, technically, five songs, so there wasn’t room. It’s a pokey, plonky bit of dance music from Shit Robot (aka Marcus Lambkin), made with Joe Goddard and Al Doyle at their RAE Studios in London.

It sounded… dubby. Like “what if Adrian Sherwood got his hands on this?” dubby. So we asked. And he said yes!

The b-side is classic Sherwood at the controls—a version that’s not fully exploded, but submerged, warped, a little demented. We’re honored and still hearing crazy new sounds every time we play it.

Eric Broucek was the ur-engineer of the most fertile era of DFA Studios, from about 2003 to 2008 (no one knows anything precisely about that time, as it’s all lost in the fog of chaos). His hand was on all of the remixes, LPs, dance 12s. He was there in that over-designed gear dungeon almost every day, recording, mixing, struggling to not roll his eyes at Tim and me. And somewhere in that fog, he quietly dropped limited runs of three 12-inch delayed reaction bombs on his own label Stickydisc Recordings—two under the name Babytalk, and one as Watussi with another DFA regular, Morgan Wiley.

Back in the day, Eric did not want his music released on DFA. He wanted to forge his own identity, which he did, sending out music that wandered from the DFA path with its uniquely wonky, upended and understated power. His music is so unlike everything else of that era, so profoundly singular, that it still sounds completely out of time.

A few years back, I started DJing the tracks again, and saw how the world was still surprised by what Eric had made, and the idea of this compilation was born.

So, in the end, Eric, we totally got to release your records anyway. We heart you, man.

The B-side on the up-coming Shango 12" release, a bass-heavy, dancefloor-minded remix from Berlin based DJ, producer and owner of Man Recordings, Daniel Haaksman and DJ Beware of the 1978 Lord Nelson track, Shango, which sits on the A-side.

Robert ‘Lord’ Nelson, now in his 80s, is one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most popular artists with a string of hit records from the 1950s all the way through to the 80s and 90s. After leaving Trinidad for the USA in the early 50’s Nelson soon became a much-loved calypsonian with the expatriate community in the New York area and beyond, as well as back home in the Caribbean, with his unique style of mixing calypso and later soca with soul, funk disco and boogie.

Taken from the 1978 Charlies LP ‘Black Gold’, ‘Shango’ was produced by Clive Bradley – one of Trinidad’s top producers in the 1970s. With ‘Shango’ Nelson follows a tradition of calypso and soca tracks that focus on the shango cults of Trinidad and Tobago that have their roots in the religion of the Yoruba people of Nigeria. With it’s driving 4/4 beat, traditional instrumentation and choral chants it was a step away from his trademark poppy and soul-flavoured soca-funk sound of the late 70s.
