Joining the dots between Brazilian musical culture and the sonic melting pot that is New York City, Saidêra are a trio on the rise. They’ve already released a pair of critically acclaimed, carnival-ready singles on Brooklyn’s Let’s Play House label and are now ready to make their debut on Leng Records.

The band’s roots can be traced back to a trip that Lemonade band member Alex Pasternak made to Brazil in 2014. While DJing at a house party in the bohemian Rio de Janeiro neighbourhood of Sta Teresa, Pasternak was left gobsmacked when a mysterious local singer/sambista Vadinho Freire, grabbed the mic and started freestyling lyrics and melodies over his set. Realising their instinctive musical connection, Pasternak and Freire decided to work together on some music, with New Yorker Le Chev joining them to complete the Saidêra trio.

Now based in Rio and California, the group’s sun-soaked sound – which they describe as “samba disco-Afro melody” – is a cross-cultural stew in which infectious Brazilian percussion, colourful synth sounds, glistening guitars and celebratory vocals combine to create magical, life-affirming musical moments.

‘Luzes Da Cidade’, their first outing on Leng, encapsulates all that’s good about the Saidêra sound and the trio’s approach to music. The song is about identity and connection and in its original form is languid, loved-up and joyous, with acoustic and electric guitars, Portuguese vocals and Korey Riker’s gently breezy flute solos rising above a squelchy synth bassline and energetic, sweat-soaked samba drums.

The song’s main mix comes accompanied by a wonderful instrumental pass featuring more extensive solos by Riker, and Saidêra’s own remix of ‘Luzes Da Cidade’ – an extra-percussive, breakbeat-tinged fusion of hazy deep house, energetic samba and sunset-ready synth-disco that will delight DJs and dancers alike.

To round off the EP, Saidêra have delivered a brand new “Uprockin Dub” of debut single ‘Deixa Tudo Fluir’, this time with female vocals from Irina Bertolucci taking the lead. Brilliantly kaleidoscopic sonically, with dub delay-laden vocals, guitars and flutes, it’s a superb, life-affirming Balearic reggae interpretation of a now familiar favourite. If you’re not singing along with the chorus after your first listen, we’d be very surprised.

Quiet Village, the duo of Joel Martin and Matt Edwards (who hails from Radio Slave), set Ferry’s “Me Oh My” amid dense jungle foliage. While their collection of edits released a few years ago on K7, Silent Movie, found them in a playful mode, their remix work since then has truly taken on the exotic spirit of their moniker. Like their drastic reconfiguring of Allez Allez’s “African Queen” or Bubble Club’s “The Goddess,” Martin and Edwards strip and slow everything down, past the slink and forced pan-culturalism of most downtempo fare, into something verging on the ritualistic. They take it to tantric lengths of ten minutes or more, fully allowing that slow heart of darkness throb of it all to overtake the space and cast its spell.

A massive hand drum figure thunders unhurriedly. Slowly, other sonic components crawl to life around it. Flutes trill like tropical birds, a crash cymbal sizzles to life, a synthesized drone that stays in the shadows but can still be felt. “Me Oh My” is a study in restraint, and each time it pressurizes to the point that release must surely come, Quiet Village recedes back into the fronds for fifteen transportive minutes. Bryan Ferry’s telltale coo echoes in the distance and then suddenly that seductive whisper is near your ears, not on a distant plateau, saying: “Can’t you hear my beating heart go in and out of time.”

The Italian label embarked on another journey of rediscovery, a specialty they seem to master.
The destination of this trip was a dusty vault in Africa, where a famous Italian musician moved years ago...
The Italian film and TV industry provided in the 60s and 70s countless opportunity for talented musicians to compose and produce a rich variety of music: soundtracks, library music, experimental music – an infinite amount of recordings that still represents a paradise for the most curious and passionate diggers.
So here we have the proof that there’s still lot to discover. Alessandro Alessandroni is one of those pioneers, a maestro that built the legend of Italian soundtracks and library music along with Ennio Morricone, Piero Umiliani and many others. His vault testifies how prolific had been those times, with hundreds of tapes and obscure recordings from that period. Among the many, a dusty tape bearing the hand-written label “Afro Discoteca” captured the attention of Four Flies.
The music contained in the tape had never been released until now.
When he listened to the tracks, Italian legendary DJ LEO MAS (one of the undisputed inventors of the Balearic sound) told us: “It is surprising to listen to something that sounds so modern... This EP is the perfect union of Afro influences and Italian taste. There’s something Afro lounge here but also incredibly cinematic – it makes me think of John Carpenter’s atmospheres. B1 (Afrodiscoteca) reminds me of clubs I’ve been in Malindi in the late 70s and the closing track is absolutely spellbinding. This is wonderful.”
PAOLO SCOTTI, head of Déjà vu Records and an authoritative Italian jazz expert said: “Alessandroni’s contribution to music is huge, he’s a great musician and a great experimenter.
