Sorrow’s only silver lining is the selflessness it inspires in others. The nightmare of last year’s fire in Oakland left so many of us shredded, shattered, and speechless. But a communal compassion surged up in response, with artists, allies, and acquaintances from all over the globe re-connecting and re-committing to the power and potential of independent music as a healing, unifying force. So many SILK friends and family reached out expressing the desire to contribute creatively to a relief effort it was clear the emotion deserved an outlet. Silk To Dry The Tears collects 31 such songs from a spectrum of 100% Silk alumni and affiliates, threaded across four sides of fogged house, fantasy acid, nocturnal electronics, sleepwalker pop, and rhythmic reveries of varied internal states. Totaling nearly 170 minutes, it’s a sprawl and a statement, shared in the spirit of inclusion, endurance, and empathy. Music brought us together; music will keep us together.

Track #8 from critically acclaimed third album ‘Shout’, ‘City Song’ is Eli Escobar at his refined best. Demonstrating his unique ability to create musical landscapes around a house template, here his reimagining of the track builds layers of context around vocal chops and urban noise, influenced by early Ice Cube albums and how they use “ambiance and sound effects to paint a picture of the story he was trying to tell”. ‘City Song’ is the moment where the album’s spirits begin to raise, and ‘City Song Part 2 (Peace, Love and Harmony)’ finds yet more hope with filtered snatches of groove. Accompany Eli’s New Version of Part 2, Ron Basejam (aka Jim Baron of Crazy P) goes funkier with richer bass and soul claps, whereas German duo COEO take a refreshingly different direction with their ‘City Song’ remix, punctuating their production with piano and percussion.

The eighth chapter of the @Apparel-Wax saga brings with it, as always, a multitude of sounds and suggestions. The masked producer always manages to renew himself, bringing something new and special to each record but always remaining faithful to his musical line. APLWAX008 will be released in January and consists of four tracks: the first is a track with a very marked dynamics and is characterized by a solid rhythm section, a bass line that recalls the UK garage, vocal samples and a beautiful harmonic evolution produced by evolving chords. The second track, A2, winks at Jazz and Soul with a production rich in rhythmic virtuosity, keyboard solos and an almost hypnotic vocal loop while the second side starts with B1, which takes us back to an imaginary dancefloor with a powerful beat and airy disco chords. The EP closes with B2 that softens the tones giving a more intimate, classy and deep end, with references to Funk and R&B. In short, an EP that touches many genres while remaining compact as a whole. Another small masterpiece of production and music selection by Apparel Wax. Out in January 2021, to warm up your winter.
