In the mid 80s I was lucky to listen to a few cassette recordings of some of New York radio mix shows. 
I was totally floored by the virtuosity of the programs. 
The DJ that impressed me the most was Tony Humphries. 
Unlike the others, he wasn’t incorporating many tricks by way of special effects, or rhythm edits. His blends were harmonious, subtle, and flawless. In a word, they were Musical.

In 1986, when I set out to start a radio show - primarily as an outlet to showcase my own re-edit and remix work - Those New York Kiss FM shows were my main inspiration.
My first shows, on Parisian radios Skyrock, then nation wide NRJ, only had some sections that were mixed, due to the mandatory commercial breaks. Also, they featured an MC friend, doing most of the talking. 

From 1989, I was given a shorter one hour slot on NRJ, but was on my own, with no commercial breaks, free to present a non-stop mix.
The radio had a very mainstream top 40 format, but as my show was during low audience hours, they let me have my own programming. The content was mostly my personal selection of Dance and House music of the time, with a few older things occasionally thrown in. 
The show was eventually cut off the air in 1994, when the station was monitoring its audience 24/7, and didn’t want to venture away their Top 40 play list anymore.

Years later, with the burst of internet, some of my shows, as they were recorded by listeners on cassette tapes, started to surface online.
Some fans I wasn’t aware of during the show’s era, dedicated time and effort to gather more and more recordings, and compile them in a few discussion groups. 

I didn’t keep a personal archive myself, but thanks to the passionate work of a few of my original audience, more than 70% of the shows have been recovered, recorded off air, as they were originally heard.

Over time, I got to meet some of those listeners, who mostly were in their teens when the shows aired.
They told me the impact the music I played had on them. Back in the 90s, it was very difficult outside the few largest French cities, to have access to music that wasn’t mainstream. 
Being the Parisian I am, I only realized decades later, that those shows had a much further and bigger reach I ever imagined.

31 years later, thanks to the most dedicated fans out there, I’m able to present you with a selection of those shows. 

Some of the music there has stood the test of time, some has not. 
Take it as a time capsule of where my musical self was in the late 80s early 90s.

It's March 2020, and a large portion of the world has a few weeks of lockdown ahead. 
I’ll dedicate to post a new recording every Friday.

I got the opportunity to officially remix this classic song to coincide with the release of a new Donny Hathaway box set. I was given the original multitrack master of the studio version (different from the live version)and it consisted of 8 different instrument and vocal tracks (as opposed to the more usual 24 tracks) 
When I take on a remix, my first goal is to make it work on a current dance floor. I like to stay very close to the originally recorded sound and In most case there's plenty to be reworked on the multitrack master to achieve this. 
This case proved a little different as there were few rhythm elements I could use to fit within current standards of club loudness levels. So I decided to take a slightly different approach, and add a new set of (acoustic) drums,  to bend the original Soul vibe a little towards Disco territory.

Nougayork is quite an unusual song in french Pop history. While many famous (and not so famous) French acts had a try at the "in sound" of their times, few strayed too far from what their audience knew them for. Claude Nougaro, a crooner with a highly respected jazz background, went to New York in the 80s and captured the sound that was then beating the heart of the city. Mixing his trademark French chanson rhymes, with bonafide electronic Freestyle sounds, he created something totally unique, and of his own. Nougayork went surprisingly massive, and became his biggest success in France.

I discovered Frankie Knuckles through his music, one that was, gentle, lush with a subdued, understated power that rocked many a dancefloor.
I had the privilege to hear him once in the heyday of his legendary residency at Sound Factory Bar in New York. I was submerged, sonically and emotionally by the beauty of the music I heard that night. I remember very clearly saying to myself that this would be impossible to ever equal.
That was 20 years ago, and I never got to hear this magic combination again.

I got to meet Frankie a few times, and he was always like his music, gentle, humble,   yet naturally imposing

I've put together here some of my favorite music from him. So that his legacy can keep on inspiring other people.

This song has been a very big New York Dance Classic. It was given a fresh run in 92 as borrowed by Ashley Beedle's Black Science Orchestra alias ("Where were you") And again in 94, Kenny Dope sampled it in the B-Side of the original Bucketheads 12" single ("I wanna know"). Yes the one that had "The Bomb" on the other side. Obviously the huge success of "The Bomb" eclipsed it, and it was withdrawn from subsequent pressings. This song was also remixed on a scarce bootleg release a few years back which was rumoured to be the work of Joe Claussell. My version is a classic re-edit of the very original Tom Moulton full length mix from 1977

In 1994 this was one of my first international artist remix. Björk had just left her Sugarcubes band to go solo, and she was only mildly know back then. I was commissioned to remix Human Behaviour by Island France who were releasing it domestically. I did 2 sets of mixes and they were grouped on a single promo 12" that was pressed to only 500 copies making it a pretty rare item today. She apparently didn't like the remix much and it stayed commercially unreleased. Luckily for me, I had a chance meeting with David Morales at the time and gave him 2 copies. Months later I was told he and DEF mix partner Frankie Knuckles were killing it in the NY clubs. Thanks to them my name got out of France and it kickstarted my carreer outside of my country.

Can't Get Enough (Yuksek Remix) [feat. Leela D]

Vince Montana Jr left us on April 13, he was 85 years. 

He spent most of them writing, playing and arranging beautiful music. You can hear playing vibraphone (or vibes for short) on pretty much EVERY recording that came out of Philadelphia's Sigma Sound Studio from the late 60s to the mid 80's.

He was playing the vibes with MFSB, composers Gamble & Huff's studio supergroup, the core of what is known as the Philly Sound. He conducted the same musicians as his own Salsoul Orchestra giving them many classic Disco songs, amongst them the infamous Runaway with Loleatta Holloway on vocals on which you can clearly hear Vince's trademark vibes licks. 

In the 90's newer school House producers got him back in the studio and he arranged strings for Mousse T, DJ Meme and most notably for MAW collaborating on the Braxton's cover of the Boss and remaking his own classic Runaway.  

When I first heard "The Way U Love Me" I immediately asked to remix it and a budget to be able to get Vince to score the strings and vibes in Philadelphia. I was certain the song could be turned into a Philly Sound classic. Despite suffering with major illness at the time Vince enthusiastically accepted and made my dream come true.

The T.S.O.P. version of "The Way U Love Me" is the remix I'm the most proud of. It features a cast of more than 30 people, each one of them putting a part of their soul in the recording.
The mix you can hear on this page is an unreleased instrumental edit where the forefront is taken by the string orchestra and vibraphone solos.

As India was saying in the NuYorican Soul remake of Runaway:
"Vince, play them vibes for us just one more time"
