ਗਉੜੀ ਬੈਰਾਗਣਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
gauRee bairaagan mahalaa pehilaa ||
Gauree Bairaagan, First Mehla:

ਰੈਣਿ ਗਵਾਈ ਸੋਇ ਕੈ ਦਿਵਸੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਖਾਇ ॥
rain gavaiee soi kai dhivas gavaiaa khai ||
(ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ !) ਤੂੰ ਰਾਤ ਸੌਂ ਕੇ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਦਿਨ ਖਾ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਬਿਤਾਂਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ, 
The nights are wasted sleeping, and the days are wasted eating.

ਹੀਰੇ ਜੈਸਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਹੈ ਕਉਡੀ ਬਦਲੇ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
heere jaisaa janam hai kauddee badhale jai ||1||
ਤੇਰਾ ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਹੀਰੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ (ਸਿਮਰਨ-ਹੀਨ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ) ਕੌਡੀ ਦੇ ਭਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
Human life is such a precious jewel, but it is being lost in exchange for a mere shell. ||1||

ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਰਾਮ ਕਾ ॥
naam na jaaniaa raam kaa ||
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ! ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਈ, 
You do not know the Name of the Lord.

ਮੂੜੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
mooRe fir paachhai pachhutaeh re ||1|| rahaau ||
(ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਸਮਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਉਮਰ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੀ ਲੰਘ ਗਈ, ਤਾਂ) ਮੁੜ ਸਮਾ ਬੀਤ ਜਾਣ ਤੇ ਅਫ਼ਸੋਸ ਕਰੇਂਗਾ
You fool - you shall regret and repent in the end! ||1||Pause||

ਅਨਤਾ ਧਨੁ ਧਰਣੀ ਧਰੇ ਅਨਤ ਨ ਚਾਹਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
anataa dhan dharanee dhare anat na chaahiaa jai ||
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਨਿਰਾ) ਬੇਅੰਤ ਧਨ ਹੀ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ । 
You bury your temporary wealth in the ground, but how can you love that which is temporary?

ਅਨਤ ਕਉ ਚਾਹਨ ਜੋ ਗਏ ਸੇ ਆਏ ਅਨਤ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੨॥
anat kau chaahan jo ge se aae anat gavai ||2||
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਭੀ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਦੌਲਤ ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ ਵਿਚ ਦੌੜੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਨੂੰ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੨।
Those who have departed, after craving for temporary wealth, have returned home without this temporary wealth. ||2||

ਆਪਣ ਲੀਆ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਭਾਗਠੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
aapan leeaa je milai taa sabh ko bhaagatt hoi ||
(ਪਰ) ਜੇ ਨਿਰੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਬਣ ਜਾਏ । ਭਾਵੇਂ ਜੀਕਰ ਹਰੇਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਨਿਰਾ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ) ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ ਕਰੇ,
If people could gather it in by their own efforts, then everyone would be so lucky.

ਕਰਮਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਨਿਬੜੈ ਜੇ ਲੋਚੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥੩॥
karamaa aupar nibaRai je lochai sabh koi ||3||
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੇ ਅਮਲਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੀ ਫ਼ੈਸਲਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ । ਸੋ, ਨਿਰਾ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਨਾਹ ਭਟਕੋ) ।੩।
According to the karma of past actions, one's destiny unfolds, even though everyone wants to be so lucky. ||3||

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਸੋਈ ਸਾਰ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
naanak karanaa jin keeaa soiee saar karei ||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! (ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ ਹੱਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ । ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਕਿ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ । ਉੱਦਮ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
O Nanak, the One who created the creation - He alone takes care of it.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੀ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਵਡਾਈ ਦੇਇ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੮॥
hukam na jaapee khasam kaa kisai vaddaiee dhei ||4||1||18||
(ਉੱਦਮ ਦੇ ਫਲ ਬਾਰੇ) ਉਸ ਖਸਮ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, (ਇਹ ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗ ਸਕਦਾ) ਕਿ ਕਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ (ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਦੀ) ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਅਸੀ ਜੀਵ ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਤੇ ਗ਼ਲਤੀ ਖਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ । ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਰਹੋ) ।੪।੧।੧੮।
The Hukam of our Lord and Master's Command cannot be known; He Himself blesses us with greatness. ||4||1||18||

On July 09, 1999, Bhai Avtar Singh Ragi, my younger granduncle, was requested to sing at the funeral (Bhog) ceremony of the legendary Sikh scholar, Giani Jagir Singh. This is the first composition sung by Bhai Avtar Singh in which I played the Pakhāwaj of my student Rabbi Shergill to honour his late Sikh-scholar dad. Bhai Sahib Swaran Singh, a nephew of Bhai Avtar Singh, and with whole he played Jori & Tabla since early 1950s is on the Jori-Tabla. For a few years, after I had revived the instrument Jori in Gurbani Sangeet in its original playing technique and making, Bhai Swaran Singh and I would play with Bhai Sahib Bhai Avtar Singh on major occasions. 
A lay listener can easily distinguish, my playing on Pakhāwaj from 4:44 minutes marker onwards, from a very busy and distinct rendition along with the composition.
Bhai Avtar Singh's Mangalācharan-Alāpa and extraordinary rendition of this original composition of Guru Nanak Dev is worthy of note —a great example of the once rich Gurbani Sangeet tradition of the Darbār Sahib, Amritsar.

Anchalaa Gehaaeiou Jan Apunae Ko Man Beedhho Praem Kee Khoree ||
He has inspired His humble servant to grasp the hem of His robe; his mind is pierced through with the intoxication of divine love.

ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਤ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਸੁ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੀ ਜਾਲੀ ਤੋਰੀ ॥੧॥
Jas Gaavath Bhagath Ras Oupajiou Maaeiaa Kee Jaalee Thoree ||1||
Singing His Praises, love wells up within the devotee, and the trap of Maya is broken. ||1||

ਪੂਰਨ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਿਧਿ ਆਨ ਨ ਪੇਖਉ ਹੋਰੀ ॥
Pooran Poor Rehae Kirapaa Nidhh Aan N Paekho Horee ||
The Lord, the ocean of mercy, is all-pervading, permeating everywhere; I do not see any other at all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਲਿ ਲੀਓ ਦਾਸੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਥੋਰੀ ॥੨॥੫॥੬॥
Naanak Mael Leeou Dhaas Apunaa Preeth N Kabehoo Thhoree ||2||5||6||
He has united slave Nanak with Himself; His Love never diminishes. ||2||5||6||
