I met Paulette Wright when she was booked to support a Laish show we played in Paris in 2017. We were blown away by her performance and we became friends. Laish returned to Paris in 2018 and we invited her to sing with us on France Inter National Radio and at our biggest ever Paris show. She was such a kind, gentle presence and possessed the most arresting voice. A few weeks after our adventure, we heard she had committed suicide. It was such a shock to the whole band and we are continually haunted by her absence.

Being me, I always intended to write a song in her honour and this song has been floating around for several years in various different forms. But today, I let this one go...

Paulette, A Black Cat

I wrote this song as an ode to sleep. A request for sleep. A need for sleep. In the darkness of the early days of young babies, sleep was the only thing I could think about. It was everything. And still it remains the answer to most of life's problems.

I recorded all the parts at home. Rosanna Schura joins me with some haunting vocals. I particularly like the freeform section at the end, where the song drifts aimlessly around like a middle aged musician in a sleepy village.

Spirit Glow

DG Solaris is the bedroom pop project from Danny Green who previously headed cult indie folk band, Laish. Both DG Solaris and Laish have been firm favourites at BBC 6 Music with multiple plays from Tom Robinson, Gideon Coe, Steve Lamacq, Chris Hawkins, and more. Blessed with a warm and affecting voice, sung from the heart, DG has spent the last decade or so converting audiences across the world. He recently moved to Frome where he founded a successful series of magically intimate micro concerts known as Night River. 2025 will see a series of new releases, the first is a heartwarming song of long term commitment called I Believe in You.
