Serving up another release by one of techno’s prominent names, DGTL Records brings new music to the forefront with Deniro (@deniro1985). The acclaimed techno artist is the moniker of Reynier Hooft van Huijsduijnen, known for his subtle and precise use of melody and rhythm in an intriguing fashion. Having been associated with the festival since 2019, the Dutch DJ/Producer has played at their ADE, Amsterdam and Digital DGTL editions. The 4-track EP titled ‘Identifier’ is set to release on March 26th.

The EP’s opening track ‘Identifier’ is governed by gravity defying synth lines with a groovy drum running through the track. It’s signature to Deniro’s pull and push style, which has garnered the attention of several industry greats - ranging from Nina Kraviz, ROD and Hunee (to name a few). The remix by Marcel Dettmann (@marceldettmann) makes for a stellar match, complimenting the original mix with a short, tougher re-imagination of the track. The German DJ/Producer is a familiar face on DGTL’s stages, in addition to being one of the most influential figures of contemporary techno in his own right.

‘Infrared’ is the third track on the EP and invokes a powerful groove and energetic synth jabs with darker undertones. It’s straight to the dancefloor with this one, melding fast arpeggios and 909 drums with fierce rhythm and racing percussion. The track is reminiscent of peak-time techno, and blends perfectly with the overall theme of the EP.

True to its name, ‘Sunset’, the closing track on the EP, is distinctly melodic in nature. Playfully balancing it’s more percussion heavy counter-parts, the Detroit inspired track delivers you straight to Deniro-land - with no shortage of synth sounds and pads. The build-up of the track is defined by a steady rhythm and laid-back groove, laced with atmospheric and dreamy elements.

Previously appearing on the likes of Permanent Vacation, NeedWant and Crosstown Rebels, the Ukraine-born, Chicago-raised and Berlin-based Alinka treats Radio Slave’s Rekids imprint to her ‘Universal Motion EP’, delivering four party-starters for her first release on the label.

A1’s ‘Universal Motion’, a driving synth-led number, strongly sets the tone by bringing thick Italo inspired leads and warping synths together to maximum effect. Moving into the second track, the bouncing ‘Emotion 2 Emotion’ intertwines floating pads and loose, bounding drums for a fun and highly playable track.

On the flip, ‘Round Round’ is a funky yet stripped-back affair, utilising raucous percussion, well placed vocal hits and pulsating basslines to create an irresistible groove. Taking the final spot on the 12”, ‘Reality Love’ sees Alinka draw for stuttering bass, classic samples and dense synths for an excellent closer to the EP.

Alinka’s rep as a DJ and producer has continued apace in the past few years with some of her biggest fans being the most notable names in the world of house, disco and techno and ‘Universal Motion’ shows her at her best.

Label-resident Stefan Vincent drops his first release on vinyl for Dynamic Reflection. And what an EP “Elephant’s Foot” is; three mesmerizing originals and an outstanding Linzatti remix on top.

Stefan’s shedding his “upcoming” status more and more and turning himself into an artist to watch. This EP is another solid step in that direction.

Serena Butler returns to the fore with an EP for Stroboscopic Artefacts. “We Want Neither Clean Hands Nor Beautiful Souls” is a four track recording of Butler’s personal juncture with the Queerverse and his engagement in queer politics, an elaboration on the alternate freedoms and minimal politics of alienation introduced with her 2016 release on Eerie. By bringing her mission of inclusion and diversity to Lucy’s Berlin based imprint S>H/E has found a kindred spirit in the pursuit of, what SA describes as, “an incessant accretion of new ideas and new formal elements that must transcend any self-limiting expectations of genres or cliques”. This release embodies the shared revere that Butler and SA have for the subversive power of techno; or, as Butler says, “the explicit, organized effort to repurpose technologies for progressive gender political ends”.

The EP’s path begins with the opener “If Nature Is Unjust, Change Nature”, a shadowy crescendo of whispered rhythms and minimal-synth leitmotivs from alt-clones of Rrose and Second Woman grafted memories. “Globular Hymen” is the club supernova of the lot; an interstellar blizzard of layered arpeggios, which hit like the wrath of a pantheon of angry goddesses. “Science is not an expression but a suspension of gender” lays on the feel of afterlife, a dubbed-out lullaby between lo-fi drums and subtle interference patterns of noise. This is the sound of Butler getting between you and your ears; reminding you to step back from certainty and imperative judgments. Last but not least, “And with fire came disparity” unleashes a vocal swarm of declaration and rebellion. Despite the straight-forward title, this is a true Demdikesterian mutant-techno stepper, with neither clean words nor a beautiful soul.
