Bruce Sterling is an American science fiction author, best known for his novels and his seminal work on the Mirrorshades anthology, which defined the cyberpunk genre. In 2003 he was appointed Professor at the European Graduate School where he is teaching Summer Intensive Courses on media and design. In 2005, he became "visionary in residence" at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.  In this podcast, he reflects on money, electronic money and the place of money in science fiction.

Early on in Ed's superb book he talks about the dilemmas of whom and what to trust in a complex economy shot through with inequalities of access to information, an area of fascination for me because I tend to think that transparency (and the construction of new markets based on it) might be one of the most important uses of the new technologies that fascinate the financial sector right now and a beneficial (if unexpected) consequence of the last crash.

In chronicling a century long transition from caveat emptor to caveat venditor Ed delivers not only an enjoyable romp through the history of fraud, with a fascinating cast of characters from the well-known Bernie Madoff to retailer fraudster Zeno Burnham, but delivers a number of very fundamental lessons about social identity, reputation capital and trust.
