In the summer of 1988, so legendary folklore recalls, a new kind of music appeared in abandoned warehouses, industrial units and fields across the UK. A phenomenon that would come to be known as Acid House. With direct influences from the USA especially that of Detroit and Chicago, as well as later Germany and Ibiza, it marked the dawn of the infamous and very British ‘Rave’ movement. The Second Summer of Love, as the summers of '88-'89 became known, and with the help of a little newly synthesized compound MDMA redefined nightlife for generations to come in UK clubs such as Shoom and Spectrum.

One of the finest and most respected House music producer / DJs the UK has ever produced, Steve Mac was inspired by this, compelling him to release his new Acid and Classic House inspired album in collaboration with many of the scenes original and seminal greats entitled ‘Bless This Acid House'.

This is a collection of brand new, authentic and original sounding House tracks that transport you back to a time when House music was strictly underground and burgeoning. Featuring collaborations with some of Electronic music’s most influential names including Marshall Jefferson, Irvine Welsh, E Raze, the late Sleezy D and Robert Owens. 

To date there have been two single releases from the album, the first is ‘Jack Said What’ containing a sample — a nod to the foundational house pillar of the mid-1980s — ‘Jack Said What’. The track also inspired the name of his Brighton based record label. It is an authentic and well produced raw house cut and an acid-tinged dancefloor slayer, filled with 303 and fizzy electro basslines which dominate throughout the track.

Followed by One Day’ a deep cut that has all the hallmarks of a classic — think Frankie Knuckles ‘Tears’, or ‘I’ll Be Your Friend’, with its deep and memorable male vocal. Delivering the aesthetics of a Chicago house record recorded 30-something years ago, but with some modern production techniques. The vocal comes courtesy of Robert Owens, probably the greatest house music male vocalist of them all and a man whose golden voice has set the standard on many classics. 

Steve Mac himself has impeccable credentials, a UK house music heavy hitter he has been a pillar of the international house community from the start. He is a DJ, Producer and Record Label Boss of 'Jack Said What' Records in partnership with the infamous Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh. With over 25 years experience, he is respected and revered for his analogue production style. Mac has released tracks for many labels including Nervous, MoS, Cr2, Tool Room, Saved, Underwater and Ovum. His remix credentials just as strong  having worked with Jamiroquai, Simply Red and Michael Jackson’s releases over the years. More recently he has been releasing under the name These Machines — a tribute to the amount of vintage analogue hardware he has in his studio in order to produce and expertly mix down his tracks.

Redraft Memories, aka Ricardo Medina, is from Mexico, and first came to JSW’s attention when he worked with Chicago house music legend Chip-E on the remix of label signature tune ‘Jack Said What’ by Steve Mac. He then remixed Steve Mac’s Detroit techno homage ‘The 313’ for the ‘Bless This Acid House’ remix album — to stunning effect. He’s previously released on labels such as Bush, Detone, Alchemy and Bitten, and now comes with his first full single release on Jack Said What.

‘Emerald’ is a techno track, but one that is made with — and is all about — love. It shimmers and undulates and will make a dancefloor bounce; you could play it anytime, but needs to be treated with care. It’s another banger from Jack Said What — let us know what you think of it.

Vertically Aligned Nano Tube Arrays

‘One More Hit’ is the first single from Pattern Perception’s forthcoming album, ’Spectrum Disorder’. The album is being released on Jack Said What sister label, Out Yer Box, this summer. 

On ‘One More Hit’, some melancholic chords are soon joined by a sultry, aching male vocal. “Day turned into night and the moon was rising,” it begins. As the keys become more pronounced, soaring strings and taut drums join the fray in a groundswell of rising-tide emotion, the vocal a heartfelt love paean that tears the listener to shreds. 

“‘One More Hit’ was written when I was high listening to Leftfield, and visualising the music in ultra-HD fractal geometry,” PP explains. “Beautiful stuff, I heard some piano playing in the background and I was like, ‘This is the best thing I've ever heard’, so had to find out what the track was. It turns out that it was the one I had written a few weeks back! It was the first and only time I’ve ever been able to listen to some music I’ve made completely objectively.”

Pattern Perception was discovered by Jack Said What’s Rob Miller on one of Grahame Farmer’s Data Transmission demo feedback sessions. It was the playing of ‘One More Hit’ on the site that pricked up Rob’s ears, so it seems suitable that — after some in-house artist development — it makes up the first single from the forthcoming album. 

A music fan from an early age, incredibly Pattern Perception only started to produce music himself during the Covid lockdown. “I found it a healthy escape from the situation we were going through, and also realised what a huge new creative outlet I had found,” he says. “I was addicted straight away.”

This psychedelic adventurer’s music-making process is now very organic, channeling all manner of sounds and samples and arpeggiated patterns. “I listen back sometimes and have no idea how I made some of the melodies that I have,” PP admits. “I feel they are out of my control and have been magically pulled from the ether or something.”

“Since meeting the Jack Said What gang I’ve developed a great relationship with them all, and would call them friends now,” Pattern Perception adds. With ‘One More Hit’, he’s now fully on the firm.
