Lalita Sahasranama is a sacred Hindu text for the worshippers of the Goddess Lalita Devi, i.e. the Divine Mother, in the form of her power, Shakti. Lalita is the Goddess of bliss, an epithet for Shiva's wife Goddess Parvati. Etymologically, "Lalita" means "She Who Plays". In the root form (vyutpatti), the word "Lalita" means "spontaneous" from which the meaning "easy" is derived and from there-forth the word implicitly extends to "play". Literally meaning transparent, Vairagya denotes a state of being that is unbroken or free of all distortions. Just as clear flowing water in the river acquires the color of the soil beneath, one who is transparent has no color of his own. Color is a product of the breaking up of light, the basis of our ability to see. It is only in the state of Vairagya that one can see as it is.

The Śrī Sūktam is one of the more popular Vedic hymns, used extensively in ritual worship in temples and homes as well as a sādhana, or daily meditative practice of recitation for tuning into the energy of Lakṣmī, who stands for all that is beautiful, gracious and enriching in man and his surroundings.

Śri Suktam is now included in the Ṛg Veda, but is considered a pariśiṣṭa sūkta or a khila sūkta (an appendix) to the 5th Manḍala. Therefore, you will find in this hymn various possibilities for svara (idamittham) My recitation follows the teachings of my Guru from Trayee Veda Vidyalaya in Bangalore.
