29 years ago, on this very day, dark clouds hovered over the hearts and minds of the Maldivian citizens, as they faced a threat that could have destroyed them, their nation, and everything they stand for if not for a valiant few who put their lives on the line to save their country.
The incident underscored a massive victory in the history of the Maldives, but not without its sacrifices. Eight military personnel and eleven citizens were killed on that day - nineteen in total.
The sacrifices were not just limited to the deceased, but is also portrayed as an irrecoverable scar on the Maldivians; the horror that day experienced, the losses they suffered are carried in traces to our generation today.
But amid the traces of despair, powerful elements of hope and resilience also linger, and those are what mattered the most. Thus Victory Day is celebrated - a day which showed the Maldivians' greatest strength, instead of weakness.
Here's a tribute to our fallen heroes, who died protecting our Nation. November 3, 1988 - Gone But Never Forgotten.
