To mark the closing of Senga Nengudi at Dia Beacon and celebrate the recent publication of Senga Nengudi: Populated Air, Dia presents a lecture by scholar Patricia Ekpo. Deploying a black-feminist methodology, Ekpo discusses previously unpublished drawings, anecdotes, and poetry by Nengudi in relation to her sculptures and other media works in the exhibition. Held in the Gerhard Richter gallery, the illustrated talk is introduced by Matilde Guidelli-Guidi, Dia’s curator and co–department head.

Patricia Ekpo is an assistant professor of African American and African Diaspora Art in the History of Art and Visual Studies department at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Ekpo’s work uses black critical theory, visual art, and psychoanalysis to interrogate the role of antiblackness in constituting modern space, the body, and the psyche. She has written for Parapraxis, where she is a contributing editor, as well as for Studies in Gender and Sexuality, The Georgia Review, and other edited volumes and exhibition catalogues. 

Dia Talks: Patricia Ekpo on Senga Nengudi

On the occasion of Amy Sillman’s commission Alternate Side: Permutations #1–32, on view at Dia Bridgehampton, the artist was joined by Caroline Kent, Rodney McMillian, and Laura Owens to discuss the exhibition. The speakers discussed the function and possibilities of painting in space, focusing on the relationships between figure and ground, artwork and wall in their respective practices. The conversation was moderated by Jordan Carter, curator and co-department head at Dia.

Antoine Catala was born in Toulouse, France, in 1975. His sculptural practice obsessively examines how technology is used in everyday, banal communications and is viscerally enmeshed with language. Catala uses rudimentary machines to materialize communication habits and highlight how miscommunication is core to mediation. Recent solo presentations include packaging or envelopes. all feelings disintegrate up close, Praz-Delavallade, Los Angeles (2020); Babble Babble, art hall, Baltimore (2024); and I love you, I love you, 47 Canal, New York (2025). His work has been shown in group exhibitions at Haus der Kunst, Munich; the Venice Biennale; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Catala lives in New York.

Join us to celebrate the release of . . . AGAIN, a harrowing documentation of MAGA America’s landscape by Mark Nowak. In his sobering voice, Nowak captures the depredations of capitalism, the desensitizing regularity of mass shootings, and the extremism that has fueled white nationalism. The author chronicles transformations as the seasons change around him, from the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic and the January 6 insurrection through Donald Trump’s reelection, attempting to make sense of a bitterly divided nation that voted for a polarizing figurehead . . . again.

For this reading and intimate first look at the book, Nowak is joined in conversation by José Olivarez, former curator of Poetry & at Dia. Visitors are invited to come early and stay late to view the accompanying video projections. A book signing will follow the event.

Mark Nowak is the author of Shut Up Shut Down (2004), Coal Mountain Elementary (2009), Social Poetics (2020), and . . . AGAIN (2026), all published by Coffee House Press. He has been awarded fellowships from the Creative Capital, Solomon R. Guggenheim, and Lannan foundations. Nowak recently wrote an introduction to Celes Tisdale’s When the Smoke Cleared: Attica Prison Poems and Journal (2022). He is the founding director of the Worker Writers School in New York.

José Olivarez is the son of Mexican immigrants and the author of two poetry collections. His debut book of poems, Citizen Illegal (2018), was a finalist for the PEN/Jean Stein Book Award and a winner of the Chicago Review of Books Poetry Prize, followed by Promises of Gold (2023), which was long-listed for the National Book Awards. He is a coeditor of the anthology The BreakBeat Poets Vol. 4: LatiNext (2020). Alongside Antonio Salazar, he published the hybrid book Por Siempre (2023). He lives in Jersey City.

Adapted from its 2025 debut at Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts, and featuring new texts and projections, aracelis girmay’s “An Experiment in Voices” incorporates original writing, close readings, and sound to meditate on Black maternity and intergenerational imagination. Beginning with the life of her great-grandmother, who was born to Black farm laborers in Georgia around 1909 and later migrated to Chicago, girmay has created a hybrid, performative essay focused on the histories and sensibilities of her foremothers while also contending with familial legacies of loss and displacement. This piece, developed in collaboration with producer Bernard Schwartz, composer brittany j. green, and violist Ashleigh Gordon, as well as director of its staged reading Dawn M. Simmons, emerges from an extended study of works by caretakers, cultural workers, artists, and scholars that are, in girmay’s words, “attending to the imagination—and to lifemaking—in catastrophe.”

Jason Hirata’s artistic indeterminacy reflects his personal tendency toward indirectness, abstraction, and ambiguity in social situations. In an art context, this might make space for contemplation or inquiry, while psychologically it is categorized as defensive, avoidant, or dissociative. Obstacles to personal relationships and collaboration afford alternatives and range; sometimes obstacles are desirable. Role fluidity enables experimentation and boundary navigation but may scuttle self-development and assertiveness. Recent solo exhibitions include Minutes, Ulrik, New York (2022–23); Dà a chi avaregia, Fanta-MLN, Milan (2024); and Vergeltung, Kaiserwache, Freiburg (2025). Recent group presentations include Time Frame, Museion, Bolzano, Italy (2023); Live Stream, Fluentum, Berlin (2024); and Concrete, Hessel Museum of Art, Bard College, Annandale-On-Hudson, New York (2025). To mark the closing of Andy Warhol: Shadows, artist Sterling Ruby will be in conversation with Dia senior adjunct curator Donna De Salvo about Warhol’s most abstract work. Considering the inspiration for and process behind the canvases as explored in the latest volume of the Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné, they will discuss how Shadows substantiates Warhol’s genuine interest in the practice of painting while simultaneously marrying it with his interests in various other media, including photography, filmmaking, and screenprinting.

Sterling Ruby is a Dutch American artist who grew up in rural Pennsylvania. Across his interdisciplinary practice, he integrates materials like spray paint, fabric, cardboard, and ceramic to create complex works that explore the possibilities of abstraction while considering themes such as power, violence, and urban and industrial development. Ruby studied at the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design in Lancaster before receiving a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2002, followed by an MFA from the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, in 2005. Recent solo exhibitions have taken place at institutions such as the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (2020); Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens (2021); and MAMO – Centre d’art de la Cité radieuse de Marseille (2025). Ruby lives in Los Angeles.
