 Marty Cooper is a storyteller of America, truly America's hidden balladeer. He has written number one hits, as well as songs covered by such luminaries as Stevie Wonder, Rod McKuen, Jimmie Rodgers, Sammy Davis, Jr., The Kingston Trio, The Brothers Four, Burl Ives, Bobby Bare, The Irish Rovers, and Jennifer Warnes. In a career extending back to the late 1950s and as an important voice of the 60s folk revival, Marty's worked with such LA studio legends as The Wrecking Crew and Jack Nitzsche. And yet, he remains largely undiscovered by the public at large.

This collection consists mainly of Marty doing Marty – singing songs previously covered and made famous by other artists, like Donna Fargo's “You Can't Be a Beacon (If Your Light Don't Shine)”, which debuted at #1 on Billboard's Country Top 100, and “A Little Bit Country, a Little Bit Rock 'n Roll”, the ubiquitous theme song of Donny and Marie Osmond, heard here with the original non-sibling lyrics. And there's protest songs censored by “the powers that be” back in the 60's, like “One More Time, Billy Brown” (originally sung by Burl Ives), because the message was deemed too inflammatory. 

But beyond all that, there is a portrait here painted with love and care of an America that we have largely lost – painted with the hope that perhaps we can find it, or some parts of it, again.

I wrote this when refugees were detained at the polish border. All the time human rights are beeing violated around the european border and also within it’s borders. I think in general we have more in common with other people than we would suspect. Our common humanity connects us. And as a christian I believe we are called to actively care for the world and people around us and ‘not just nod at the daily news but stand strong against the wrong and the darkness that surrounds us all’.

Mit seiner neuen Single „Sommer kann kommen“ schlägt der Hamburger Singer-Songwriter start.button.jetzt ein neues Kapitel auf: Der Song markiert den Beginn eines Akustik-Projekts, das bewusst auf Reduktion setzt – musikalisch wie inhaltlich. Nach der Veröffentlichung seines Albums Anfang Juni folgt nun am 20.06. – nur einen Tag vor dem offiziellen Sommeranfang – dieser zarte, aber kraftvolle Neubeginn.

„Sommer kann kommen“ ist ein Lied über Sehnsucht und Hoffnung, über das lange Warten auf Licht – im wörtlichen wie im übertragenen Sinn. Mit eindringlicher Schlichtheit erzählt der Song von einem inneren Umschwung, von einer Rückkehr zur Wärme, zum Leben, zur Offenheit.

Musikalisch bewegt sich der Track zwischen Liedermacherei und akustischem Indiepop. Eine ruhige Gitarre bildet das Rückgrat, der Refrain wird von einer Orgel getragen, bevor sich behutsam ein Cello und ein Kontrabass dazugesellen. Ein verträumtes Piano-Solo in der Mitte des Songs schlägt die Brücke zwischen Melancholie und Aufbruch. Im Outro bleibt schließlich nur noch die Stimme – begleitet von Gitarre und leichten Streicher-Farbtupfern.

Der Songtext ist direkt und poetisch zugleich – und spiegelt die Philosophie von start.button.jetzt wider: „Es ist endlich Zeit“ heißt es im Refrain – ein Satz, der nicht nur den Sommer, sondern vielleicht auch ein inneres Erwachen meint.

Nach dem eher indie-poppigen Klang seines aktuellen Albums, zeigt sich start.button.jetzt nun pur, intim und entschleunigt – ganz im Sinne seiner musikalischen Wurzeln. Das Projekt steht sinnbildlich für einen Richtungswechsel: Weg vom großen Arrangement, hin zur akustischen Tiefe. Ob daraus eine EP oder ein Album entsteht, bleibt bewusst offen – der Weg ist das Ziel.
