I grew up in Mississippi, started raving at 16 in New Orleans. Music and that time shaped my entire life. Specifically Derrick Carter and U.N.K.L.E. , they soundtracked the next 20 years of my life and influenced me as a producer and DJ. I still carry that influence in my sound today.

"Going back-to-back makes sense. We live together, we really love the same music." The Berlin-based duo discuss their partnership behind the decks—and in life.

Tama Sumo and Lakuti are two of Berlin's best-known house DJs. Partners in life and in music, they've played as solo artists (and together) since the early '90s, and hold residencies at Panorama Bar. Unsurprisingly, they have an unparalleled synthesis behind the decks and in conversation, and on this unique episode of the RA Exchange, they interview each other about their formative experiences in the music industry and the roots of their respective musical practices—for Tama Sumo, the bars and lesbian weekenders in Kreuzberg, and for Lakuti, disused warehouses in Johannesburg.

They also talk about deeper, more intrinsic aspects of their crafts, their relationship, and their identities as marginalised artists navigating Germany's house and techno scene. This interview was recorded live at The Standard in London as part of the series TheirStories, an essential event In London's queer cultural calendar that platforms narratives from the LGBTQIA+ community. LA-based Canadian artist Jessy Lanza has brought dance and pop music together and elevated both art forms in the process. At the heart of her work are her own sensual vocals. They bring human warmth and emotion to vibrant and uptempo grooves and result in music that is both energetic and accessible yet personal and honest. Next to critically acclaimed studio albums for Hyperdub, she has made a fine entry into the DJ-kicks mix series and toured solo from Asia to Australia. Europe to North America. Her latest album is her broadcast and boldest yet - Love Hallucination features work from producers such as Pearson Sound, Jacques Greene, Tensnake, Paul White, and Jeremy Greenspan and conforms Lanza to be out in a class of her own. 

Lanza brings her feel-good vibes to the podcast series this week, not least with a couple of her own exclusive new cuts as well as one mysterious known gem early on. They add up to a perfect representation of her sound - the first half is a feel-good mix of retro-future boogie, glossy 80s r&b, party-starting funk bombs and many more irresistible moments of pure heat from Brenda and The Big Dudes, Debbe and The Code and Gino Soccio. Things then turn more towards the dance floor with deep house from Frankie Knuckles, bass-heavy rhythms from Addison Groove and a piano banger from Mall Grab. It's just the sort of happy, sunny mix you will be coming back to all summer long.

Our next festival takeover sees another local favourite - the fun-loving Field Maneuvers - take the reins. Celebrating their 10th(!) anniversary this year, Field Maneuvers returns with their biggest line-up yet at the intimate secret Norfolk location. With a strong mixture of local legends and international talent on the bill, inviting the likes of Black Artist Database, Dialled In, Rye Wax, Kindred, Dalston Superstore and more to do stage takeovers, it's set to be a scorcher!

For the first mix in this takeover we head to NY baby with DJ Wawa! Hit Factory Records co-founder and The Lot Radio resident, DJ Wawa provides us with a live recording of a recent set from the famed Hot Mass party in Pittsburgh. Speaking about the recording, DJ Wawa says, "it was recorded with an E&S DJR 400 rotary which is where all that isolating came from. I think I used cdjs for one song. Rest are records. Hopefully the set at FM gets as freaky as this one did. felt very fun and good in the room. Some fun twists and turns :)"

I so appreciate my fellow diasporic and Korean Seattleite, Sangwoo, who brings us another summertime collage. I’m brought into my languid feelings of late summer — spirited but introspective. It’s another nostalgic mix, full of funky, soulful cuts in the Korean language.

Sangwoo is a DJ, producer, crate digger, and media artist based in Seattle who has been bringing unique vibes to the scene. Before moving to PNW, he had appeared in venues and radio shows in Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka, Los Angeles, and New York City. 

Starting as an aspiring turntablist back in 2003 in Seoul, he quickly developed his own style of DJ’ing which mixes different genres of music and shows cultures and scenes he has been traversing — it is not at all uncommon to hear him mixing Detroit techno with Japanese footwork, or Korean funk with Afrobeats all together. 

You can find him spinning high-life at a disco party or spiritual jazz at a lounge somewhere in Seattle. Wherever you catch him, it’ll be a musical journey that you’ve never been on.

"I just moved to Brooklyn and recently received my possessions, which includes my record collection. I wanted this to be the first mix that would ground me in my space and neighborhood. The records are a mix of purchases old and new and very indicative of the vibe I was serving in 2019, but with a lil extra sauce to show where I’m headed in 2020 and beyond.
