Qwalia is the experimental, improvisational home for a quartet of some of London’s most prolific and inspiring musicians. 

Led by drummer Yusuf Ahmed (Joy Crookes, Anoushka Shankar, Unknown to Known), much of the band’s music to date surfaced in a single two-day session at the Fish Factory in Willesden, West London. 

Although improvisational at its core, the band’s fluency and innate musicality makes it hard at times to believe these pieces weren’t written and developed over weeks, rather than conjured in the moment, with no prior rehearsal. Qwalia’s music is an instinctive aural expression of how things seemed in the moment of creation.

Featuring Ben Reed on bass (Frank Ocean, David Byrne, Richard Russell’s Everything Is Recorded), Tal Janes on Guitar (Jordan Rakei, Cherise, Waaju) and Joseph Costi on keys and synths (Cat Stevens, Tom Herbert, Heidi Vogel), the band’s debut album ‘Sound And Reason’ was released by Alberts Favourites in March 2023.

Folktronica is a style that was born as a seed sent by Mother Earth and reproduced around the world like flowers, being the musicians it's bees. From Latin America they made their way to the cities like the green arms of the Amazon, but with charangos, flutes and synthesizers, until reaching the most remote places of the Earth as a whole new voice in electronic music.

With the mission to find the precious balance between the world of traditions and technology, plus a touch of mystery and modernity, folktronica positioned itself as a genre in alternative websites such as Bandcamp and Soundcloud, and then became massive in Youtube and Spotify, which were filled with artists, fans and music that spread the style from Latin America to the world, finding then each region of the world its own interpretation of this mixture of ancient sounds and contemporary technology.

Today, in the midst of a chaotic present in humanity and in the face of a Western music industry focused on the purely commercial, the beauty and depth of this ¨mestizo¨ movement that speaks of Mother Earth, folkloric traditions, ancestral rhythms and themes of the spirit is often overlooked, meanwhile it keeps exploring with the highest musical technology and forming itself as a new great world underground movement. Today Ritmos del Sur undertakes a project to share, strengthen and value these musical ideas that already inhabit the whole world, with flavors that from Latin America also pass through Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa and much more. ¨This is Folktronica¨ is an eclectic compilation of 14 songs that are immersed in this genre, a spiritual nectar that we hope will bring you peace, joy and lots of rhythm to cheer your body and soul.

This project was developed by Ritmos del Sur, with the sponsorship of Cosmovision Records, with its beautiful artwork designed by Choque and a sound exquisitely Mastered by Matías Parisi, both from Argentina and compiled by Felipe Nadeau, aka ¨El Extravagante¨, from Chile, now based in Dijon, France.

After 10 years of globally celebrated but only occasional collaborations, Bosq & Kaleta have their first full length album together. On No Be Today the duo is finally able to stretch out and explore their wide range of influences and musical histories.

The album seamlessly melds styles from West Africa & it’s diaspora, Caribbean & South American sounds most prominently, with Disco, Funk, Soul, Hip Hop & House. Live Horn sections mix with a blend of acoustic and electronic drums, Kaleta’s effortlessly funky guitar, Bosq’s layers of keyboards, bass & synthesizers, and heavily layered percussion sections that tug at your waistline. Kaleta’s virtuosic melody writing ties the pieces together with infectious chants and socially conscious lyrics that span Yoruba, French, Goun, Fon & English.

Kaleta, having played in the bands of both Juju music great King Sunny Ade & Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, brings the first hand experience and authenticity seldom found in todays West African influenced fusions. Bosq, now on his 6th full length album, brings a 20 year run experimenting with updating vintage sounds in the most tasteful way possible, melding Disco & Funk with styles from around the globe. In that time he’s worked on adding his touch to records by Ray Barretto, Orchestre Poly Rhythmo de Cotonou, Toure Kunda, Poolside, Rawayana & more.

The record is an ode to these musical histories, with the title No Be Today coming from a Nigerian saying, which explains that this did not just start and this did not happen by chance, there’s lifetimes of work behind this. It’s also a flag planted for a different way of doing things as technology makes the “perfect” & “clean” sound easier and easier to obtain, with AI art slapped on the front.

This record is handmade, full of love and feeling, from the music to the incredible art by Brazilian muralist Amanda Lobos that graces the gatefold vinyl. The statement made by this record is that we should still take our time and delve deeply into projects with our whole soul.
