Marlena Shaw - Woman of the Ghetto (Flume's Jackin House Mix)

I got the opportunity to officially remix this classic song to coincide with the release of a new Donny Hathaway box set. I was given the original multitrack master of the studio version (different from the live version)and it consisted of 8 different instrument and vocal tracks (as opposed to the more usual 24 tracks) 
When I take on a remix, my first goal is to make it work on a current dance floor. I like to stay very close to the originally recorded sound and In most case there's plenty to be reworked on the multitrack master to achieve this. 
This case proved a little different as there were few rhythm elements I could use to fit within current standards of club loudness levels. So I decided to take a slightly different approach, and add a new set of (acoustic) drums,  to bend the original Soul vibe a little towards Disco territory.

(I Know) I'm Losing You is the incredible track by Rare Earth that was sampled by Kanye for his equally amazing track Fade. 

I wanted to make a bit more use of the big sample in the original and bump the drums a little more too and in the end, deliver a bit more of that percussive groove towards the end. 

I hope you like it. Seemed to go down well at Soul Train last weekend.

Beatnik City rolls it’s sleeves up, slowly dips it’s strong hands in a bowl of resin, then a bowl of haribo tangtastics, turns towards us and beckons us on for battle…but wait! Beatnik City is a lover, not a fighter! And this is Northern Beats Volume 2, which means only sunshine funshine and hijinks will ensue

Turns out the resin and haribo were for Aldo Vanucci’s vajazzle, who knew Hiphoppapotamus and Shimi Sonic owned their own sparkly sweets beauty parlour? DJ Ozyboy was in earlier for back sack and Caramac, Leygo is in room one having his Brazilian nuts, Badboe is in room two having a candy necklace - we’re pretty sure that is definitely porn. Superfort is early for his dirty herbert sherbet dib dab and Daytoner is in the toilet having a Curly Wurly, we’d best leave him to it. F-Block is having his hair set a fantastic candy floss pink and Retro the Robot is just smashing everything up with a giant rubber mallet, he’s been hitting the space dust quite hard and is likely expecting everything to explode into skittles.

Willy Wonka would most definitely approve of this kind of behaviour, taste the rainbow!

Lamont Dozier's iconic 1977 song "Back to My Roots" was an underground Disco smash made famous by the great DJ Larry Levan from The Paradise Garage and Club Zanzibar days. I've always played and liked this gem that was buried in my parents record collection when I was growing up. In my later years I have revisited this tune gaining an even greater appreciation for Dozier's genius! :-)

After the success of Rayko’s Juno chart topping ‘People’ EP (Retro006), Retrospective label heads Ruben &amp; Ra step back into the breach for the label’s 7th release.

For their 4th outing on the label they came to notoriety on, the West London-based duo came up with the concept of selecting their favorite stateside disco cuts from between 1980 and 1985 and reworking them into 4 entirely new tracks. 

Already gathering hype, ‘When I’m Feelin’ borrows from Geraldine Hunt’s watershed 1980 classic ‘Can’t Fake The Feeling’, while ‘My Love’ samples the Malibu-based producer Ned Doheny’s ‘To Prove My Love’ from ’81. 

Over on the flipside, the soul-injected ‘Everybody Loves Good Music’ pays homage to the Dayton’s Capitol Records-signed ‘The Sound Of Music’ from ’83, with a boogie jam entitled ‘All Night’ inspired by Inner Life &amp; Jocelyn Brown’s 1984 anthem ‘Moment Of My Life’ completing the package. 

As is always the case with a Retrospective EP, there’s a 320k FREE download and this time it's the sunshine electro-funk of ‘Everybody Loves Good Music’.
