Cada astro, cada planeta, cada estrella, tiene su dirigente que mantiene su órbita y curso en orden para que exista una armonía y equilibrio en el cosmos, por ello los mayas consideraban cada estrella como un ser viviente. Veían en la misma naturaleza la Divinidad.

Es igualmente importante la sobrevivencia de la concepción que los mayas tenían de la estructura del cosmos, que si bien no se expresa necesariamente como un conocimiento formalizado sí subyace en el lenguaje de las creencias y rituales.

Podemos decir que el manejo del tiempo cíclico traza la trayectoria de la identidad en la historia, en el largo plazo su concepción de la estructura del universo le ofrece al maya el contexto espacial en el cual desarrolla su vida tanto individual como colectiva y tanto terrenal como sobrenatural.
