In 2013, Different Circles launched with Weightless Volume One, a compilation that helped define a new minimalist aesthetic in electronic music. 

Twelve years later and after a six-year pause, the label returns with its tenth release: Ping Volume One.

Like weightless, ping isn’t a genre. It's an approach to anchoring and propelling sound without relying on the steady pulse of a kick drum.

Instead, a single percussive hit — the ping — holds the centre. Dry and high in the mix, or echoing distantly through space, it becomes a temporal anchor. Around it, the rest of the track can undulate, bend, float or collapse.

The term first appeared on Mumdance’s radio show, where playing “the pingy ones” from the Different Circles back catalogue became a running joke. In the Discord community, it evolved into a shared language, with memes, lore and a mascot known as the Ping Devil.

In 2023, Mumdance aired The “Ping Report” a radio show that gathered everything into a coherent moodboard. It included original tracks made by Discord members for the show and set the foundations. From there, more producers began making ping intentionally, and over time, Ping Volume One took shape.

As the idea came into focus, Logos and Mumdance noticed that much of the Different Circles back catalogue, if not explicitly weightless, could now be understood through the lens of ping. It was a sound they had been drawn to long before they had a language to describe it.

Ping Volume One is a document of shared instinct. A collection of tracks connected by feel rather than formula, shaped by years of dialogue between a community of artists and listeners who were drawn to the same sounds & ideas before they had a name.

Having also appeared on DIFF001, Adelade based Strict Face has made a name for himself with releases on Mr. Mitch's Gobstopper label and Lockah's Tuff Wax. In addition, he continues to contribute to Adelaide’s developing underground club music scene by way of his involvement with the Geometrics club night.

Mumdance & Logos launch their new Different Circles sub-label, DEVILS with a surprise drop from go-to grime producer Boylan, who delivers his Devils Mix of Logos’s track Glass (from Different Circles 002).
As the Weightless sound spins off in to its own independent orbit the label founders present DEVILS as a vehicle for a new series of singular releases representing the original energy of grime.       
Only previously circulating amongst a handful of DJs on USB and dubplate, Boylan’s remix realises the oft-attempted but rarely achieved synthesis of grime’s radical re-appropriation of rhythmic conventions and the laser-guided precision of late 90s Metalheadz.

Placed beside Sinclair’s Ricky/Gunman What [2016] one-two for Keysound, the sino-futuristic instrumental pressure of Bells (RPG Mix) effectively doubles the London producer’s tally of releases in fine style, slyding along Far Eastern scales in weightless dimensions of liquified gamelan melody, zipping syn-flutes and fiyah-breathing Triton bass, all buffeted into sweepingly cinematic contours but all kept locked-on course for the dance and DJs in-the-mix.

Thanks to Sinclair’s up-to-the-minute mixing sorcery and discreet use of sampled dialogue, it’s a strong cut above the instrumental grime field right now, and a mighty strong look for any and all in orbit of grime and it’s current mutations.

Five years after releasing the widely feted UK underground classic Cold Mission, Logos returns with his second solo album, Imperial Flood

Written between 2015 and 2018 Imperial Flood is an exploration of dark and altered pastoral material, drawing on the trance-inducing agrarian topography of eastern England interpolated through modern speculative literature including writing by Jeff VanderMeer, Christopher Priest, Lando and JG Ballard, via influences as diverse as the Erosion and Chain Reaction back catalogues, experimental computer music and the late-90s drum and bass minimalism of Photek, Digital and Spirit. 

The album includes a new collaboration with long-standing production partner Mumdance and will be released on Different Circles, on vinyl and digital formats on 12 April 2019
