This is the final episode of Dexta's Lab for 2013. Full of loads of fun and beauty.

" So this is my final mix-tape for the year, it's been fun organising, and very useful for my record box. Thanks to everyone who's supplied music over the past ever, whether via shops, promo firms, demo's or just dub-plate business. This years been quite intense for me with the label, and to celebrate the end of the year, I've organised and put together a label album featuring artists from the past, present and future. It's called "Evolution Of The Giraffe" and will be out pretty soon, so make sure you keep your eyes and ears open for the clips, CD's and Vinyls!

Dexta's Lab #6

Blood Trust makes a pitch-black return to the Digital Red Label series with "Give Them Rope" and "Leagues Apart", revealing a decelerated, yet intricate evolution of the signature sound he first introduced on 3024. 

"Give Them Rope" navigates the murky terrain of mutant UK garage and grime influences, hinting at the pulse of Diwali-rhythm dancehall. An ever-present double-time roll punctuates through distorted ambience, evoking a sense of relentless drive. 

"Leagues Apart" delves deeper into the skeletal framework of UK garage, but deviates into a stripped-back, darker space with precision bursts of fragmented breaks. Are these tracks Drum & Bass or has Blood Trust begun an exploration of something else entirely?

The second appearance of 2023 in the mix series focused on the label and affiliate artists, we have the great pleasure of featuring the core Soul Ex Machina member, Brno / Czech Republic based producer with Slovakian roots -  the one and only don Johney. On the occasion of his freshest release on the Soul Ex Machina, which appeared almost three years after his label debut, and series of releases on the likes of Deviant Audio, Shakhta records or the Coki´s label AWD. Johney is renowned for his wide musical knowledge and ability to combine elements into unseen variations, which he showcases in his current studio mix. Expect nothing less like journey of bass and rhythms full of groovy moodswings, music both "coming from" and inspirations of the artist. It is great to welcome Johney back on the label and already look forward to his future endeavors!

Kolectiv come with their first individual release for Diffrent Music after their track "Slow" which featured on the 'Evolution Of The Giraffe' LP last year. Originally a North London kid, Dexta’s new release is dedicated to the lands South of the River that have shaped his adult life. Brockley, Syndenham, Honor Oak, Deptford. The streets, buildings and sounds that have surrounded him as he fell in love and got married, turned his passion into a career, and found untold new friends and inspiration. 

Taking a trip down memory lane, the Diffrent boss unleashes two tracks from the archives. 
First comes ‘Tenz’, a dubbed-out halftime chugger with a sting in its tail. Like a Drunken Fist Master, Dexta’s signature wonky style is in full effect, landing a fatal combination of ungainly subs, below-the-belt bass stabs, and the harsh clang of metallic snares. As the track’s woozy elements appear to stumble into each other, they in fact neatly slide together to deliver the knockout blow.

On the flip comes a final hurrah from Conduct, the Blu Mar Ten Music-aligned duo who have now sadly parted ways. ‘Dissolute’, featuring Coma, originally featured on Dexta’s 2015 debut EP, ‘SE4’ — another love letter to South London — as a globular beats cut with a jittery footwork slant and wistful vox. Conduct’s sci-fi reconstruction chops, glitches and repeats like the controls of a malfunctioning spacecraft as it glides through deep space. Long sat as a secret weapon in the records boxes of a very select few, this is one for the Diffrent headz.

DIFF045 lands as part of a trio of releases from Diffrent’s core artists Dexta, Lakeway and BrandNewTrumpets, each in some way reflecting the past, present and future of the label to celebrate its 11th anniversary.
